Fall has arrived! While summer will always have my heart, early fall is definitely my second favorite time of year. Sure, I hate the early darkness and slowing garden productivity, but brilliant blue skies and sunny days, apple picking, and fall cooking all help a little. I’ll let you in on a little secret.  . . as much as I live for summer produce, I really love fall cooking! I love roasting and braising and making hearty, comfy one pot meals to pair with red wine.

Last weekend we got an early start on autumn fun with a trip to Belkin Family Lookout Farm. I am obsessed with local food and growing or picking my own fruit and vegetables, and I was excited about the variety at Belkin. This Natick farm, founded in 1651, can be found after a really lovely drive through Wellesley, and had several types of apples, Asian pears, peaches, and plums, in addition to pumpkins, cider donuts, caramel corn, and tons of other fall flavors. For families, they have children’s play area. To get anywhere on the property, everyone must take a train, which is fun for all ages!

We arrived and caught the train out to the orchards to get picking. We filled a giant bag with fruit and may have sampled a few pieces along the way. The air was fresh, the weather was perfect, and it felt amazing to have such a beautiful outdoor space to spend the day in.

On the way out of the orchard, we browsed the farm store and picked up the requisite cider donuts, which we tucked into immediately. I don’t even like most donuts, but man, a fresh cider donut is pretty incredible and these were some of the best I have had.

Right on the property also sits the Lookout Farm Taproom, serving hard cider that they make, along with food items like charcuterie and flatbread. Of course we had to go in for a tasting! We shared a cider flight, with the two standouts being the pumpkin cider, which had nice baking spice notes, and the summer cider, which had lemongrass and ginger notes. All were crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink.

A visit to Belkin Lookout Farm is easy from Boston, and it opens up your day to a beautiful area with lots of open space. It’s only 20 minutes from Boston but feels like a real getaway. If you are looking for fun apple picking followed by delicious adult beverages ( and a TV for football), definitely add Belkin Lookout Farm to your fall fun list.

Our CSA continues to fill each week with a little bit of excitement and lots of healthy local produce. The last couple of weeks have simply been bursting with summery delights like heirloom tomatoes, peaches, and corn, possibly the best foods in the world (paired with a lovely Rosé, of course)

Heirloom Tomato BLT

As is often the case in the warmer months, simple was really our goal in highlighting the beautiful food provided by our local farmers. Big, juicy heirloom tomatoes and crisp local lettuce lent themselves to quick and easy, yet completely heavenly BLTs while green beans were perfect sautéed in a little olive oil, chopped garlic, and black pepper.

Each week brings its own share of greens, and I imagine that will continue once summer ends. Rainbow chard is yummy chopped and cooked down with a little olive oil, a great balsamic vinegar, and some salt and pepper. This would be a great side dish for a good cut of beef and your favorite red wine.

We drooled over the fresh peaches we received, super juicy and sweet. They were more often than not eaten on their own, but once warm night called for a peach and tomato salad topped with goat cheese and a little fig balsamic. Simple and perfect.

Finally, while we did eat plenty of corn from our CSA, the below dish is actually from my beloved Steel and Rye. Their soups are always phenomenal, and this chilled corn soup was one of my favorite dishes of the summer.

Trying to cram in as much summer as possible, I have literally been eating cherries, tomatoes, peaches, and corn all day every day. I’ve been dreaming about a day when I am a zillionaire and can build a greenhouse in my back yard to grow all of my fruit and veggie favorites year-round. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

My pizza made with almond meal pizza crust is a big hit in this house, so this week, instead of a saucy, cheesy pizza, I decided to put a summery twist on it by making an almond meal flatbread with grilled peaches, arugula, prosciutto, and goat cheese.

Yum.

The only real work involved in this recipe is making the almond meal crust. I simply mixed up two cups of almond meal, two eggs, and a drizzle of olive oil together and rolled it out as thin as possible. It was still too thick for my taste, but it’s a sticky dough. I’d love to perfect it to get a less thick, less dense crust.

I baked the crust at 350 for about 18 minutes.

While the crust was baking, I pulled together my other ingredients, including this Volpini pre-chopped prosciutto. I think I am done with prosciutto. I love the flavor, but it’s always so chewy!

I used my grill pan to get some grill marks on the peaches. They were beautiful, smelled great, and more importantly tasted so delicious.

Once the almond meal crust was done, I just topped it with all of my ingredients. I finished with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt.

The flavors in this dish were phenomenal as were the different textures. Unfortunately, the almond meal crust was really thick  which made it a little dry. I guess it works better as a saucier option to cut some of that dryness. Still, this was a tasty meal and one that packed a pretty good protein punch.
