It’s 2020, and Galway, Ireland is celebrating being the European Capital of Culture. The festivities are kicking off this week throughout the county, and as a long time lover of Galway, I sure wish I was there! Chances are, we will visit sometime in 2020, and I look forward to seeing all that’s happening during this momentous year!

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time or follow me on social media, you’ll know that Galway is one of my favorite places on the planet. I am thrilled that we have already taken our 22 month old to Galway twice and can’t wait until he is old enough to understand how beautiful and special the town and county are.

Our Most Recent Trip to Galway – Food

One thing I love about Galway and Ireland in general in recent years is  the celebration of gin, via many local distillers, craft cocktails, and bars devoted to gin. My tastes have changed over the years, and my palate, once a fan of smoky scotches and whiskeys now loves the botanical notes and clean, crisp flavors of a good Irish gin.

On the last day of our last trip to Galway, we made a stop at Hyde Bar and Gin Parlour. I had walked by the space earlier in the week and peeked inside; it is absolutely gorgeous, and I knew I had to squeeze a stop in.

Adorned with colorful murals, quirky furnishings, funky light fixtures, and fun art, Hyde is a feast for the eyes in addition to being a great spot for cocktails and snacks. I was also surprised how kid-friendly it felt late afternoon on a Saturday. I wouldn’t bring my son during the evening, but he well enjoyed fries and ice cream with his cousin as an afternoon treat. There was plenty of noise and bustle that I didn’t feel he was bothering anyone, which is a concern of mine when we choose restaurants.

Hyde, as one would guess, has a spectacular selection of gins in their Gin Bible. A variety of tonics and garnishes help to make for endless pairing opportunities. Other spirits and cocktails are also available, in addition to low and no alcohol drinks. There’s something for everyone!

And the simple bites we had were delicious! We were a little peckish after wandering around town, even after our big lunch at Il Vicolo (which is amazing).

It’s hard to believe that we got back from Ireland three weeks ago. The trip completely flew by and was incredibly fun and restful, even though we were traveling with a very busy toddler. We luckily had lots of help from family and got to sneak away for some delicious dates, in addition to having some family meals out. Here are just a few of the delicious bites and sips we enjoyed during our Galway travels. Take me back!

I was sick before we left, and air travel did not do me any favors. For our first lunch out, we went to Papa Rich Street Food Kitchen, where we took in views of the Rivrr Corrib and Galway Cathedral while sipping Prosecco and devouring gigantic steaming, spicy bowls of soup. I love Papa Rich and could easily eat their fresh, bright meals every day.

And then there was Il Vicolo. Our little guy was sleeping as we walked the streets of my favorite town, so we decided to take advantage of the quiet and the warm October day with patio seats at Il Vicolo, which has some of the best seats in Galway. Check out that view!

We feasted on bruschetta and  beet salad with goat cheese to start.

And then we moved on to meatballs and Bolognese. .  . incredible, comforting dishes!

We finished with affogato, perfectly sweet gelato topped with rich espresso. This was one of my favorite meals in recent memory. It was nice to have a quiet lunch!

We spent a few days out in Roundstone, a beautiful little town in Connemara, and we spent a lot of time at O’Dowd’s Seafood Bar, which is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at.

Everything at O’Dowd’s is super fresh, and the seafood is deliciously local. One night I had a pile of mussels with a big glass of cold white wine. Heaven.

We had our fair share of Irish coffees while gazing out the window at the beauty of Roundstone Harbor and mountains of Connemara.

Local crab claws in garlic butter and a massive seafood platter were dinner another night. When seafood is that fresh, there is simply nothing like it.

Back in town, I made it to my favorite Galway wine bar, Sheridan’s for a glass and to duck out of the rain during the Saturday market.

Thanks to my husband’s cousin, we also had time for a lunch date at another Galway favorite, Ard Bia. If you are in Galway, you have to eat here! I was craving something comforting and healthy. This pumpkin curry dish was sublime!

Ard Bia is where the river empties into the sea, and the views here are also spectacular. The menu is all local, all the time, the wine list is delightful, and the setting is super cozy. I am always looking to find restaurants with a similar vibe at home, and they just don’t exist.

Perhaps it’s the age of the city and its buildings, but there is just something special about every spot we visit in Galway, and I always miss it. I can’t wait to be back again!

It seems that St. Patrick’s Day week is the perfect time to look back on our most recent trip to Ireland and to share some of the incredible food we ate while in Galway. Our eating (and drinking!) included a mix of old favorites and places that we hadn’t tried before. I am currently craving all of the below!

Galway Christmas Market

We visited Galway during the annual Christmas market, one of my favorite times of year to go. The market features shopping, entertainment, rides, and of course food and drink. Mulled wine and hot dogs made on a massive round grill, topped with onions and mustard, are two market favorites we indulged in more than once!

We got away for a date night in Galway, and we decided on Ard Bia, an old favorite, cozy and romantic, with the wild River Corrib emptying into the sea alongside it.

The menu is focused on Irish ingredients, and we indulged in dishes like potato and tarragon gnocchi, Burren smoked haddock bake, local salad with Galway goat cheese, and a beautiful trio of dips, including a vibrant beetroot one.

Ard Bia is simply beautiful, bathed in candlelight, and adorned with dried flowers and greens. The walls are lined with Irish treats for purchase, including the Achill sea salt I bought to brine our Thanksgiving turkey!

One of the spots that was new-to-us, but a Galway favorite, was Papa Rich, which has several Galway locations. We ate at the Newtownsmith location which had beautiful river and cathedral views and incredible street food style meals.

Spicy Sambal Goreng and a crisp beer made especially for Papa Rich made for the perfect lunch. I wish we had Papa Rich in Boston!

Xi'an Street Food

Also new-to-us was Xi’an Street Food, where we shared some incredible dishes including Amber Fire Szchuan Style (With chips! I love that this is an option in Ireland!) and a hand-ripped noodle dish, which they are known for.

We celebrated my in-law’s anniversary at a beautiful special occasion spot the Park House Hotel. A long and lovely lunch included the smoked salmon platter, complete with veggies, salads, mashed potatoes and bread, and a to-die-for Toblerone cheesecake for dessert.

Last but certainly not least, we made it a point to visit one of my favorite cocktail spots, Tribeton, for a couple of their beautiful gin drinks in their stunning setting. Tribeton is also a great date spot, though we went early enough that it was baby-friendly as well!

We’re looking at our travel calendars to see when our next trip to Ireland makes the most sense. . . baby flies free until he is two, and we plan to make the most of it!
