A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a media lunch to learn about visiting Germany, and more specifically, about Bavaria. When I first started working for myself, I didn’t have the time in the day to eat lunch, much less go out to an event, but as I organize myself a little more, I am finding time to attend events, and it is really nice to enjoy the perks of a flexible schedule.

Destination Germany

The lunch was held in a private room at Post 390, and on a raw, chilly fall day in Boston, the fireplace and warm welcomes from the German Tourism and Destination Bavaria teams was really lovely.

In addition to truly genuine hospitality, we were welcomed with German wine, Hans Wirsching Silvaner. Not all German wine is sweet! This was delightfully dry, floral, and acidic, with a mouthwatering finish.

Before the lunch and presentations began, I got to chat with travel writers from around the region. To be honest, sometimes networking events make me really nervous, but this was a great crowd of very nice people. I was glad I went!

Unfortunately, my phone started doing something weird during the presentation, and all of my photos are gray boxes, which is disappointing, because my salmon salad was gorgeous and delicious.

The presentations were fun, informative and engaging. A few highlights:

  • Munich Airport is absolutely amazing; it isn’t just a place to pass through, but rather, it is a destination in itself. You can easily exit security to take in the sights and amenities, which offer an on-site brewery, wave pool (or skating rink in winter), Christmas market, two on-site hotels, and nap pods. There’s shopping, a huge number of dining opportunities, free coffee at the terminals, and so much more. I half want to visit this airport and half don’t want to visit, because I am pretty sure it would spoil me for airports going forward!
  • In this year’s Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2016 yearbook, Bavaria has been named a “Best Region”, pointing to the Free State in the south of Germany as a top 10 travel destination. There’s a lot happening in Bavaria in 2016!
  • Bavaria will mark the 500 year anniversary of the Purity Law, which has been so crucial to the growth of German beer and its popularity around the world. The Purity Law says that beer can only contain four ingredients, water, malt, hops and yeast.
  • In 2016, Bavaria will also focus on its aristocratic past. It is on my travel list to visit the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein, but there are also many more beautiful properties and historical sites to see.
  • In an effort to pique the interest of younger travelers, the concept of The Young Danube has been developed. From the natural beauty of the Danube to the history that can be found along the way, this concept has travelers go against the current to do things like experience a Baroque wine city in Passau to experiencing relaxing romance in Deggendorf.
  • Nuremburg is a fascinating city. Though its history is connected to the Nazis, and that history is remembered always in the Documentation Centre Party Rally Grounds, the city is also full of positive and cultural things, like a world-renowned Christmas Market, excellent cuisine, and art. It was the home of Albrecht Durer and houses one of the most important imperial palaces dating back to the Middle Ages. Prior to this event, Nuremburg was always a place I only associated with negativity, but now I am truly interested in visiting a place that sounds so beautiful and interesting.

I love learning about new places, and since I only spent a very short time in Bavaria years ago, truly did learn a lot at this lunch. It reminded me of the beauty of Germany, along with the great food and people, and it made me want to plan a return visit soon!

There are so many intersections where my work and blogging meet that it’s hard not to blog about work events all the time. To celebrate the re-launch of the newly renovated Royal Sonesta Boston, we recently held a small media reception that included tastes of each our the hotel’s food and beverage outlets as well as a peek into new meeting space and bites from the banquet menu.

The event was a fun one to plan, especially since I have gotten to know so much of Boston’s blogging community in all of my blogging years. And still there are so many Boston bloggers for me to meet!

We had a really fun group for the event, which kicked off in the hotel’s brand new waterfront meeting space. The views of the Charles and Boston skyline are some of the best available, and the mini crudités and cheese plates were a big hit.

After having small bites and wine with introductions, we moved on for a tour of the hotel lobby to our next stop, ArtBar.

ArtBar offers seasonal cuisine and craft cocktails, and we sampled their Apple Turnip Soup and Duck Liver Pate on Crostini, along with cocktails from the fall cocktail menu.

Our next stop was the well-known and loved Restaurant dante. You may have seen Chef Dante on top Chef recently. The restaurant serves some pretty amazing pastas and other Italian fare, we and we enjoyed some samples of their famous arancini and meatballs along with a delicious white wine.

Our final stop of the night was the Royal Sonesta’s brand new coffee and pastry shop, Studio, where we had cider cake pops, brownies, biscotti, and coffee. I think we were all full at that point!

It was so fun being able to share the beautiful place I work with some bloggers I knew and others I was so happy to meet. We have so many things going on at the hotel, from holiday specials to holiday party promotions to packages and the ability to earn rewards points. It’s a topic I love talking about, so if you would like more information, feel free to ask!

The Boston Wine Expo is still months away, in the dreaded month of February , but last week a bunch of Boston bloggers got a sneak peek of what the Wine Expo has in store for us in 2013.

The preview event was held at Action Kitchen at the Seaport Hotel, an absolutely gorgeous cooking and event space used for private events.

I would LOVE to cook and entertain in this space.

The Wine Expo preview featured some of the wineries that will be pouring wine at the actual Expo, plus food from some of the vendors who will be sampling there.

Crab cakes

Since I was having an intense training week, I seriously chowed down on crab cakes and beef with a bright, beautiful, amazing chimichurri sauce.

In addition to eating, we were able to taste wines from several wineries. As I always do, I had my favorites.

I spent quite a bit of time at the Hope Family Wines, seriously falling for Troublemaker by Austin Hope, a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah. This wine has smoky and chocolate-y flavors along with dark fruit, really luscious, full of body, just gorgeous.

Another favorite table was a winery we have visited, Alexander Valley Vineyards. I have loved the time we’ve spent at the winery and have been hoping to return for their annual Cyrus dinner which takes place in the caves every March. Their Zinfandels were a fun choice for the event, and we tasted through Temptation, Sin Zin, and Redemption. . . are you sensing a theme? Being a lover of the Dry Creek Valley, my favorite was Redemption, but I really enjoyed them all.  I love Zinfandel, its big, bold fruit flavors, hints of spice, and roundness. It’s a go-to wine for me in the winter. Fingers crossed I will get to pay Alexander Valley Vineyards a visit soon. . .

In addition to enjoying lots of great food and wine, we learned about some of the new additions to the Boston Wine Expo including a blogger ambassador program, social media lounge, and some great seminars on buying wine, including one from The Urban Grape’s TJ Douglas. It seems like it’s going to be a great Wine Expo, and it gives us reason to look forward to one of the coldest months.

Happy Friday, everyone! I am looking forward to some down time, but I am most looking forward to the wedding of my dear friend Michelle!
