Next to Sicily, Mendoza and Buenos Aires Argentina are at the tippy top of my travel must-visit list. I love wine from Argentina, and Mendoza looks like heaven from photos I have seen.

Bodega Norton Chardonnay

This week’s Wine of the Week comes from Bodega Norton in Mendoza, and it is a cheerful, bright, and delightfully tart value Chardonnay, perfect for stocking up on and drinking with friends.  This Chardonnay is 100% fermented in stainless steel tanks, meaning it is not at all oaky, and there is no trace of the buttery notes that come with malolactic fermentation. It’s super crisp, light, acidic, and summery with notes of lemon and green apple. It is yummy. It would pair great with seafood or spicy food; we had Afghani food the other night, and I think this would be a perfect match.

Through wines from afar and dreaming of warm travel to places like Argentina, I am trying to stay out of a weather-related funk, but it is hard. Are you as over the snow as I am, if you are stuck in an area that’s been hard hit?

Gundlach Bundschu’s website calls this wine “A seriously red blend for everyday.  Seriously.” and we definitely found this to be true when we delved into a bottle on a very chilly winter weeknight.

Gundlach Bundschu was one of the first wineries we ever visited when we started many in a series of  trips to Sonoma County, and we tend to visit whenever we are near the town of Sonoma (not always the case because we love to center our trips around Healdsburg).

As I sipped a glass of the 2012 Mountain Cuvee, all bundled up in a hoodie and slippers and fleece galore, I couldn’t help but think back to this beautiful day last September when we were almost too hot when we brought our tastes out to enjoy Gun Bun’s beautiful views. I said almost because too hot just doesn’t really happen to me.

The Mountain Cuvee, while ripe, fruity Sonoma through and through, is a perfect wine for winter, with rich notes of cocoa and a bit of tobacco. It’s big and bold but balanced and elegant enough to pair with food like a beef stew or a roast wrapped in bacon or something as equally as hearty.

We paired our Mountain Cuvee with a thick, veggie and spicy soy chorizo filled tomato sauce over whole wheat penne, a nod to both the weather and our resolution to eat better in the New Year.

Have you found any new favorite wines yet in 2015?

Somewhere between our Savor Healdsburg food tour and tasting at Cartograph, we had a few extra minutes to wander around Healdsburg and decided to pop into the Banshee tasting room. We’d heard great things about their wines, and the tasting room had a good energy to it, little seating areas filled with small groups tasting and chatting.

Banshee Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

The Banshee tasting room has comfy couches, a cool vibe, with wines by the glass or bottle, along with tasting flights. It seemed like the perfect place to hang out, and overall we loved the concept of taking your time with a tasting and being comfortable while doing it. There were a couple of downsides worth noting though.  They had one spit bucket for about 30 people, so we felt forced to drink the pours we were given, something we tend to not want to do when tasting all day. And the person pouring for us actually badmouthed other wineries in an attempt to sell theirs. . .We would have felt a lot better about the experience if that hadn’t happened, but we tried to brush it off because we liked the space and the wines, which were really memorable and delicious and worth stopping for.

One of the wines we brought home is this week’s wine of the week. We love Sonoma Coast Chardonnays and have been inspired by visits to places like Flowers to drink more wine from the far reaches of Sonoma County.  The 2012 Banshee Sonoma Coast Chardonnay comes from a cool climate and thus ripens later in the season. Due to a blending of styles, which includes both oak and stainless, the wine is super balanced, with notes of vanilla bean, tart apple, and citrus. It’s far more delicate than some other California Chardonnays, and it is very easy to drink as well as to pair with food.

If you’re in Healdsburg, I would definitely recommend a stop into Banshee tasting room for a little relaxation. If it’s not too crowded and you can grab a dump bucket, you might just love it.
