Winter whites. I wish I could wear them, but with me being generally accident-prone year-round, and with the dirty, wintry conditions of city-living,  they don’t make it to my wardrobe. Winter white wines, however, are more than welcome in our home, and I love to have a chilled, hearty white wine with a roasted chicken or other cozy meal. For recipes, please visit my recipe post page.  Today’s wine of the week, like last week’s was enjoyed at my favorite Galway wine bar, Sheridan’s. If you ever visit Galway, definitely give it a try!

Domaine de Coussergues Chardonnay Viognier

Tasting notes for this Domaine de Coussergues Chardonnay Viognier blend actually call it a summer wine, and while I can see that, I think it’s perfect for colder weather. The Chardonnay gives it a crisp acidity and citrusy notes, but it’s the Viognier that makes it stand up, giving it that weighty mouth feel that I love most about Viognier. Baked apricot and mango, big, forward, ripe fruit make this wine pack a flavor punch with a lingering finish. I loved it and loved that, when in Europe, I am better at trying European wines, where at home we tend to drink a lot of wines from the US. One of my favorite parts of tasting wine is discovery of a new favorite in my glass or a new place I want to visit.

Don’t limit your wine pairings to what other people  might find seasonally appropriate; enjoy what you like year-round!

Do you have a house wine? I always love having an old standby favorite on hand in a quantity that ensures we can serve it over and over again at a variety of occasions. We tend to change up our house wine based on what great wines at great values we find, but we usually have one.

This summer, our house white wine is Cline Cellars Viognier. We love Cline wines, and we were able to find this Viognier at Bin Ends for $8 a bottle. It’s definitely always worth looking at stores like this for wine bargains!

Cline Viognier

Cline Viognier has all that I love about Viognier, those ripe peach notes, hints of pineapple, vanilla, and a round and decadent mouthfeel. It goes well with all sorts of food, and since it has good body, it would make a great winter white as well.

In all of my trips to Sonoma, I have never visited Cline, but I am hoping to get there this month. The countdown to wine country is on!

If you had to choose a house white wine for your home, what would you choose?

Grilling under blue skies for the first time in a season calls for a special wine that pairs perfectly with the simple, flavorful ingredients showing up on the table. While it’s still nowhere near warm enough for me (C’mon 85 degrees!), it has been warm enough for outdoor dining a couple of times, and this past Sunday we had a leisurely and simple dinner, paired with a bottle of wine from our recent North Fork trip.

Bedell Viognier

Our time at Bedell Cellars was simply incredible; I have a full blog post coming, but I took so many pictures and took in so much information that it is taking its time coming together. We picked up quite a bit of wine while visiting Bedell, and well, you know I love my Viognier.

This Viognier embodies some of the greatest characteristics brought to wine by the North Fork terroir, mineral notes and salinity, along with up front notes of peach and pear.

I think this wine is absolutely perfect with grilled fish and vegetables. It is fresh and bright enough to bring out the flavors of the food without overwhelming them.

We paired the Bedell Viognier with a simple dinner of grilled salmon, zucchini, and asparagus, all sprinkled lightly with olive oil and lemon pepper. The wine and dinner were easy like Sunday evening.

I love sampling Viognier from different wine regions and comparing the taste and texture. It’s a grape I love to explore and one that I think is ideal for summer.
