Congratulations to our winner Carolsue, and thank you to Gourmesso for their generous giveaway! And thanks to all of you for sharing your favorite way to drink coffee. Happy holidays!

Chillier temps call for warm drinks, and whether you’re relaxing alone with a good book or entertaining a group, the holiday season calls for a little extra deliciousness. Coffee is a constant in our household. We always, always consume it on work day mornings (On weekends we often linger over cups of Irish tea.), and coffee also often pops up as part of dessert, after dinner, or even in dinner recipes.

chocolate orange coffee Recently Gourmesso reached out to me to see if I wanted to try some of their Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules. I love my Nespresso machine and am always on the lookout for less expensive capsule options, so of course I said yes!

Gourmesso sent me a ton of different samples, and in addition to making a roast with a Gourmesso espresso marinade, I also decided to craft a cozy hot coffee drink for the holidays.

One of our favorite snacks when we are in Ireland is Jaffa Cakes, delicious little sponge cookie discs topped with an orange jelly and covered in chocolate. Chocolate and orange go so well together, and I knew that the Gourmesso Soffio Cioccolato would be the perfect base for a Jaffa Cake coffee drink.

Gourmesso Coffee

I started by brewing full cups of the Gourmesso coffee in my Nespresso machine. To each Irish coffee glass I added a half shot of Godiva liqueur and Grand Marnier. . . maybe a little more than half a shot. Experiment with measurements until your coffee is just right for you. You might also want to add a splash of Bailey’s Vanilla to stand in for the cookie part of the Jaffa Cake. As you can probably tell, the options for customizing your own festive coffee drink are endless, but you should definitely start with a quality coffee base.

Godiva and Grand Marnier

chocolate orange coffee drinks We bundled up and sipped our coffee drinks out in our yard, still loving the space in the cold (and despite all of the leaves). I loved the citrusy note of orange as a refreshing counterpart to the sweetness of the Godiva and the richness of the coffee. These coffee drinks are certainly a fun way to warm up this winter.

Thanks to Gourmesso, one lucky reader can enjoy five different Gourmesso roasts or flavors. They’re allowing me to host a giveaway for 50 capsules. They have 20 different coffee blends at the moment and are expanding that line every year.

A few of my favorites include the Colombia Arabica Mezzo and Bolivia Pura Mezzo. I love a good dark roast coffee, and these are smooth and just lovely.

Interested in winning your own Gourmesso? Just leave a comment on this post letting me know your favorite way to drink coffee or how you would doctor up a cup of Gourmesso for fun coffee drink. I will choose a winner on Friday.

Good luck!

Good Stuff

I’m not quite sure how it’s already Monday. I feel like the weekends have been flying by, especially because I worked yesterday but mostly because Marathon Monday is barreling down on me. I don’t feel ready. At ALL. Let there be panic!

It’s been awhile since I have done a post on favorite things, and since I discovered a few over the weekend, I thought it would be a fun way to kick off the week.

Here are some things I am loving this week.

Nespresso Naora coffee – I love my Nespresso machine, like a lot. When I received an email from Nespresso’s PR agency offering to send me samples of their newest coffee pods, Naora, I was pretty excited and even happier that they arrived on a weekend so that I could enjoy a leisurely cup.

Naora is 100% Colombian coffee and has rich, complex flavor, without being bitter or too strong. Like tasting a wine, I tried to incorporate my senses of smell, touch, and taste with my first cup of Naora to see if I could get some of the tasting notes that define the coffee, like a juicy acidity. I got some very subtle flavors of dark fruit; mostly I sipped and enjoyed. This coffee is a Limited Edition from Nespresso, and I will be stocking up.

More Target grocery shopping discoveries

Archer Farms Dried Mango – Lately, especially after long runs, I have had a major craving for fruity candy. I bought a bag of Swedish fish and thoroughly enjoyed them, yet felt really unwell after. While shopping at Target this weekend, I grabbed these dried mango slices which are perfect for that sweet, fruity craving. Note, they do have added sugar so aren’t a great fruit replacement, just a candy replacement. The flavor is super fruity, and the chewy texture makes the slices take longer to eat so I don’t overdo it.

Archer Farms Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt – This yogurt actually kind of tastes like strawberry cheesecake; it is delightfully fruity and has that cheesecake richness, along with a yogurt tang. I wish they had more low fat yogurt flavors; I find fat free to be pointless for filling me up but Archer Farms has some delicious-sounding flavors in its fat free line. Maybe I’ll give them a try anyway. I have been pleasantly surprised at every Archer Farms product I have tried!

Philadelphia Dark Chocolate Cream Cheese – Uhhhh yes. I shouldn’t have discovered this because from the second I stuck my finger into the dark, chocolatey tub for a taste, I was smitten. And when I followed the serving suggestion and dipped some salty pretzels in. . . oh my.

There isn’t a sugary flavor at all to this; it’s smooth, rich, decadent, with deep chocolate flavors. This will be a go-to dessert item in our house from now on. I can not wait to make some sort of fresh strawberry shortcake with layers of this cream cheese in the middle.

Harvest Moon Winery – Our last day in Sonoma was pouring and resulted in many sprints from the car to tasting rooms, leaving my camera and other electronics in the car. The focus was just on getting inside, and I missed out on photographing some incredible tasting experiences. From the second we burst into Harvest Moon (literally sheets of rain falling), tasting room director Erin was an absolute delight. She shared with us some food prepared for a party that had cancelled due to the weather, told us fun anecdotes about the wines and winery, and poured us some of my favorite wines of the trip. I especially enjoyed their sparkling Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. The wines were beautiful, the tasting room cozy, and the company a lot of fun. Not bad for a random stop!

Things I am not loving? People who are passive aggressive and rude in emails when you know that in real life they are not quite that brave. And downstairs neighbors who buy DRUM KITS with cymbals over the weekend. I literally thought there was a joke on me when I heard it yesterday, a day I ended up working on a really frustrating account. But since Sunday was kind of awful, Monday will be fabulous, right?

Do you have any new favorites or fresh frustrations to share today?

Have you ever heard of Nespresso? No? Up until I was invited to a media dinner with Ted Allen at the Nespresso Newbury Street location, neither had I. I was obviously excited about the event and RSVP’d immediately. I love Ted Allen, and I was definitely intrigued at the idea of a private dinner party in a Newbury Street boutique.

Here’s a little bit about Nespresso from their website:

Nestlé Nespresso US, the worldwide pioneer and market leader in highest-quality premium portioned coffee, introduces consumers to the world’s finest Grand Cru coffees to be enjoyed in the comfort of their own homes and savoured outside the home, in locations such as gourmet restaurants, upscale hotels, luxury outlets and offices. As a company, Nespresso is driven by core competencies that enable it to create highest quality Grand Cru coffees, long lasting consumer relationships, and sustainable business success. The Nespresso offer focuses on its unique Trilogy, the unmatched combination of exceptional coffee, smart and stylish coffee machines.

I arrived in the area early (I am super early for EVERYTHING; I spend a lot of time wandering and waiting!) and met up with Megan for some more wandering. After seeing the sleek interior of Nespresso on my walk by, I couldn’t wait to get inside. Once we found Bridget, we headed into the event, and as good bloggers do, whipped our cameras out and got started shooting.

Check out how modern and pretty these Nespresso machines are. The spacious, sparsely decorated store featured an abundance of colorful coffee capsules; they really were the décor, and it made for an interesting and beautiful event space.

While Ted Allen was interviewed in the back, I checked out the beautiful dining table, set for an intimate dinner party.

Creative coffee cocktails kicked off the event; I opted for the mojito which had an espresso float. At first sip, I thought. . . interesting. Once the espresso integrated a little more into the drink, it became delicious, like an espresso with a hint of citrus, really refreshing.

I got to chat with a few other bloggers and with Rachel, one of our Weber-Shandwick hosts, before sitting down for dinner. Mark Uhlemann, Nespresso coffee expert, was on hand to talk about Nespresso and the menu pairings he decided on; each course was paired with a wine and a coffee. Ted Allen also spoke, and then we dug into our amuse, a sweet potato cup with parsnip puree whip and coffee caviar, paired with Nespresso Livanto Grand Cru and Argyle 2000 “Extended Tirage” Brut sparkling wine. We were instructed to first taste the sparkling wine, the amuse, and then the coffee. The bubbly was beautiful; aged on the lees so it had that nice toasty, brioche characteristic that paired well with the sweet potato. The coffee had a toasty caramel flavor that also went well with the sweet potato.

Bridget sat next to Ted Allen and got to chat with him quite a bit. I thought it would be nerve-wracking to be at such a small dinner with a celebrity, but he was so incredibly down to earth and seemed genuinely interested in his guests that I think everyone felt at ease.

Prior to our entrée, Mark and Ted got up to talk a little more about the pairings and coffee conversations. Ted shared his first Nespresso experience, at a villa in Provence, and shared with us a little bout the idea behind Nespresso; it’s not about grabbing a coffee to go, it’s more about the moment or the experience and the quality of the coffee. He likened it to wine, and I loved the idea of savoring that quality experience.

Then we started in on our next course, grilled sirloin club steak with veal demi ketchup, chive roasted fingerling fries, and a fried crab cake with lemon caper aioli, paired with a 2004 Pahlmeyer Merlot and a 2011 Fall Limited Edition Dhajana coffee.

We talked a little bit about Merlot and the Sideways effect, how Merlot got a bad name. I know it’s a wine people love to hate, but I actually really enjoy a good Merlot (one of my faves comes from Michel-Schlumberger), and this one had hints of coffee along with some beautiful dark fruit. It paired well with the meat, not so much with the crab, but overall was really delicious.

And then came dessert. I am pretty sure the delightful trio of minis was everyone’s favorite. From left to right, we have a mini mocha frappe with Nespresso chocolate pearls, vanilla affogato with homemade coffee biscotti, and Nespresso pot du crème with hazelnut crema. This dream trio was paired with a 10 year old Niepoort Tawny Port and Decaffeinato Intenso. Thank goodness for decaf espresso that doesn’t taste decaf!

The Port offered dark, dried fruit qualities, not too sweet, and nice and rich, the perfect sip. My favorite dessert was the frappe, especially the chocolate pearls. They were tiny bursts of cocoa in the creamy, coffee shake. The chocolate-dipped straw sealed the deal. Winking smile

But that wasn’t it. Before we left, a group of Boston bloggers got to have a photo taken with Ted Allen, pretty exciting! And as we made our way out, we found out that, thanks to the generous people at Nespresso, we were going home with their brand new Lattissima Plus coffee machine. This sassy machine warms and froths your milk for perfect coffee drinks at home. I can not wait to set it up. And to buy some cute little espresso cups to drink out of!

I am all about quality, strong coffee and love the way Europeans take that moment to enjoy things, whether it be coffee, wine, food, or time together, and I am excited to get started brewing up my own Nespresso. I am also very excited to return to the Newbury Street coffee boutique to shop around for capsules and to savor a taste or two of espresso.

Many thanks to Nespresso and Weber-Shandwick for the invitation to this event which I attended free of charge as their guest.
