We are embracing winter this year! If you’ve been reading/following me on social media, you might know that summer is far and away my favorite time of year, and I have a really hard time dealing with dark and cold.

Last winter and recently I have read articles on the Danish concept of hygge, the idea of coziness and a positive state of mind and mental well being. Hygge is about the feelings that come from creating a cozy space and positivity, and I am trying my best to keep this concept in mind.

After a very busy work week, we had a quiet Friday night in by the fire. Friday happened to be Nollaig na mBan, or Women’s Christmas in Irish. This is celebrated as a day for women, who tend to do much of the Christmas shopping and cooking, to relax. And relax I did! My husband waited on me with our favorite Indian takeout as I sat with sparkling wine by the fire. We watched The Missing (so good!) and went to bed early.

With hours of cozy sleep under our belts, Saturday morning was full of energy, and we walked to our favorite Irish bakery, Greenhills Bakery in Adams Village for giant cups of tea and a shared chocolate croissant. Hearing Irish spoken in Boston is always a delight, and we soaked up the homey atmosphere before walking a bit more in the snow and deciding a proper brunch at Lucy’s, also in Adams Village, was necessary!

Look at that biscuit!

The food at Lucy’s is delicious, and with snow falling outside, there was such  cozy vibe inside. We lingered over our meals, not checking phones, just talking and watching the snow fall before venturing out for our beautiful winter wonderland walk home.

After another quiet night in, we decided that Sunday should be for hiking at World’s End. We should have brought our snowshoes, but instead laughed and trudged through the drifts to get to high points, where we enjoyed amazing coastal views. It was SO fun.

Hiking always works up an appetite, and especially when it’s snow hiking, so we headed to nearby Hingham Shipyard to try Trident Galley & Raw Bar. They had live music, an incredible brunch menu, and excellent service.

Trying to be a little healthy, we shared a beet salad and the short rib hash, which was a spot-on recommendation. It was amazing.

I love splitting plates like this; we were full but didn’t feel awful, and we got a taste of a couple of great dishes. The live music was a nice touch as well. Covers of old favorites, not-too-loud, and uplifting, it was a lovely addition to brunch.

After even MORE outdoor wandering at the Shipyard, we decided we needed a little bit more time outside, and stopped at the Milton Yacht Club on the way home to capture the setting sun and beautiful late afternoon winter light.

It was the perfect weekend. I realize I can either hate this time of year or spend more time being grateful for all I have to get through it – food, shelter, warmth, love. I think if I can keep that focus, I can make it to spring!

A holiday weekend is a great time to take a couple of day trips from home, and in the Boston area, there are plenty of places to visit. We love going down to Hingham, which is only about 30 minutes away from Boston, and this week we got our exercise in a new-to-us spot, Bare Cove Park. The park features 484 acres along the Weymouth Back River, and it is a beautiful spot for running, walking, picnics, and I would say, yoga.

Bare Cove Park

The trails in the park are mostly paved, and they often pass by beautiful scenes like this one, a marshy river peeking out behind the trees. The trails are also very flat, ideal for walking and running. The park is extremely dog-friendly, with dozens of off leash dogs. If you are not a fan of dogs or have a dog-aggressive dog, I wouldn’t recommend going here.

We walked for about an hour total, and one of my favorite spots along the way was this wide open area, complete with a beach and wide grassy field. I’d love to bring a yoga mat here to do a yoga podcast.

Bare Cove Park

Bare Cove Park is close to restaurants and shops in Hingham, and we enjoyed a glass of wine at Alma Nove in the Hingham Shipyard after our walk. A trip to Bare Cove Park could easily be a half day trip, or you could mix in some shopping and dining to make it a full day. Our trip to Bare Cove was yet another reminder of how beautiful the Greater Boston Area is and how much there is to do here.

As you plan your summer weekends, keep in mind some of our favorite Boston area day trips, and feel free to share your own in the comments!

As you know, I am a big fan of day trips, road trips, and exploring new towns, mostly for the purpose of eating at new places. There’s usually some sort of other activity in there too, like hiking or wine tasting, but food is often the catalyst.

On Saturday, before we headed to the Hull Harbor Illumination, we traveled to Hingham for an early dinner at the bar at Tosca.  We love taking drives to Hingham to eat at The Lobster Pound and to walk at World’s End (and to dream about having a waterfront house with lots of land and its own deep water dock), and Tosca is an old favorite for a delicious, romantic night out.

Tosca, Hingham

Located just a block from the water, Tosca occupies a large, open space with a kitchen that’s front and center. All of my photos of the space had people in them, unfortunately, so you will have to take my word for it. The main dining room is very large while the wine room is cozier, a little darker, and my pick for a date night.

After arriving at Tosca, we read through the lengthy cocktail menu and decided on our first cocktails. I love that Tosca uses locally made spirits in many of their drinks, so I went with the Privateer, made with Privateer rum from Ipswich, MA, and a lemon, thyme, and rosemary syrup.  Tosca Menu

While I wished the rosemary came through a little more, I loved this icy, lemony drink. It was so refreshing!

While we decided on dinner, we were given bread and a lemony chickpea spread that was surrounded by a pool of fruity olive oil.

These crispy, cheesy flatbreads were also placed in front of us and devoured immediately. I must find a way to make these at home for our own cocktail hour.

For my second cocktail, I ordered the Sicilian Orange Soda. This was a dangerously delicious drink that tasted just like orange soda but was made up of Grey Goose orange vodka, aperol, and San Pellegrino Aranciata. Yum.

We started with oysters. If they’re on the menu and local, there’s a good chance we’re getting them. I added some Tabasco from the mini bottle to mine and loved the spice with the brininess.

For dinner we shared the Angry Lobster: (spaghettini, Calabrian chile, crushed tomato, sweet corn) and the Panzanella: (grilled fireking bread, red onion, cucumber, tomato, caciotta cheese & peppadew dressing). Both were absolutely perfect. It was a rainy night, and the Angry Lobster definitely provided a warm and cozy kick. The Panzanella was full of crunchy cucumber, sweet tomatoes, and a tangy cheese. I don’t think I have had caciotta before, but we both really liked it.

Hingham is definitely a fun place to visit in the summer time, but Tosca, with its cozy wine library and wood oven, is a destination year round, definitely a place I think of when I am in the mood for a little getaway close to home.
