While we enjoy rosé year-round in our house and definitely sipped pink wine on our recent California trip, there is something about cracking open that first bottle of rosé when spring finally arrives in Boston.

We marked that occasion with a sample bottle I had recently received from Spanish DO Utiel Requena. More information on this region is at the end of my blog post.

Aula Bobal

This Aula Bobal Rosado wine is from Bodegas Coviñas and is 100% Bobal. Bobal is a dark-skinned grape that is native to Utiel Requena.

The first thing I loved about this wine was the color, of course. I love all things pink, and the vibrant color of this wine and the pretty label are just lovely additions to a summer dining table. This would be a perfect wine for a wedding or baby shower. I am picturing  baskets and baskets of bottles of beautiful pink wine. .  .

We opened this wine right after a long walk, and I was glad I had it chilled. It is perfect (at least for me) right out of the fridge, cool and refreshing. This is definitely not a shrinking violet of rosé wines. I would go as far as to say that it is bold and bright, with notes of strawberry and watermelon, not sweet and not super acidic, just really fresh and balanced but also with a richness about it, if that makes any sense. While this is the perfect addition to your summer wine list, it’s a rosé you could easily drink in the winter; it definitely has structure and flavor with a bit of oomph!

It’s also the perfect grilling companion. We had spice and citrus marinated chicken thighs with grilled mushrooms and peppers, and while the wine’s freshness and fruity notes went with the citrus and peppers really well, that bit of boldness it has made it a match for the stronger flavors of the mushrooms and meat. It was the perfect spring dinner!

Utiel and Requena’s winemaking culture prides itself on tradition with over 2700 years of history. Archaeological digs in this region have proven that the production of wine and its commercialization have continued uninterrupted since the beginning of the Iberian age until present day.  Bobal is the signature grape of this area. Utiel-Requena includes 9 municipalities where you can find a range of micro-climes that help to make different kinds of wines to express the unique terroir found in the region.

This wine was provided to me as a review sample. All opinions are my own.

hydrangeas

Mondays are the perfect time for reflecting on all the good things in life, don’t you think? Life can be stressful and fast-moving, and I feel pretty lucky to be able to share a few happy favorites, like the hydrangeas my mom got for ME after my flight home for Mother’s Day was cancelled.

Lately I am also loving the Boston skyline. The below was taken on a photo shoot for work. I really, really love my job, and taking film crews up on the roof of the hotel is pretty awesome.

Boston skylineThe Boston skyline from Sam’s at Louis? Also amazing. Boston steals my heart when it is nice out. I can not get enough of this city!

I have blogged about it in the past, but brunch is one of my favorite things ever. Brunch at Steel & Rye is just as good as it gets. Mint Juleps, Bacon Coconut Donuts, and Smoked Salmon Potato Pancakes? Yes, please!

brunch at Steel & RyeWith the arrival of great weather comes simple grilled meals. Salmon and asparagus with some garlic powder and a glass of Chardonnay is the best dinner ever.

I love everything about boat season, especially my Sperry Topsiders. These are the most comfy shoes ever. I love what they symbolize – nice weather, change in seasons – but I mostly love the way they feel on my feet. They’re cute too.

Sperry TopsidersNew Boston restaurants are also a favorite. We enjoyed a beet salad and lots of other good things at Merchant in Boston. It was all so good, especially the oysters and beet salad and farro pasta. I can’t wait to try the rest of the menu.

Merchant Boston Finally, I am loving planning our next San Francisco and Sonoma County trip. We try to get to Sonoma once a year because it is just a part of my soul. We will probably spend some time in Napa and Sausalito as well, and I can not wait!

What are your recent favorites?

Summer definitely paid us a visit this past weekend, and I was lucky enough to be home in NJ with my family to enjoy it. Celebrating three moms (my own, my sister, and my sister’s mother-in-law) along with my brother-in-law’s birthday called for a great dinner, margaritas, and cake. Perfect sunny weather was an added bonus that allowed us to enjoy dinner outside.

Over Cinco de Mayo weekend, we made a quick stop at Bin Ends in Braintree and ended up buying their margarita “kit” a bottle of Reposado Tequila, 12 limes, and a bottle of agave. The recipe was included on the bag, and we discovered a new favorite, easy, at home cocktail.

My sister loves margaritas, and the weather was perfect, so I mixed up a batch of these.

2 ounces Tequila

1 ounce lime juice

1/2 ounce agave

1/2 ounce water

ice

Mix up and enjoy! My sister thought the drink was a little too strong, so she added some orange juice to hers.

Dinner was better than any restaurant. I picked up some fresh tomatoes and ended up eating them raw, topped with the sour cream/horseradish cream sauce we made for the filets. Yum.

My nephew, who is just learning to talk, kept grabbing tomatoes and saying “ball”. He’s too cute.

My brother-in-law also grilled up a ton of vegetables including red onions, yellow peppers, zucchini, and eggplant.

We also had filets and grilled scallops, corn on the cob, and baked potatoes.

It was an outdoor feast!

eating outside

I love nice weather eating because it is so simple. Other than a little steak seasoning and the horseradish cream, all of the food was pretty much plain, allowing the freshness to shine through. As much as I love recipes, I find it kind of refreshing to enjoy bright colors and flavors of nature and high quality ingredients.

How have you celebrated the nicer weather (fleeting as it may be!)?
