The North End’s Nebo has been on my “must-visit” list for quite some time now. Over the Boston Marathon weekend this past year, we had plans to go there. Heat and huge North End crowds drove us to the cooler, quieter suburbs for dinner at A Tavola in Winchester, so when I had an event in the North End this week, right across the street from Nebo, we decided to make a long overdue visit.

Nebo has been around since 2005, which makes it even worse that I made my first visit in 2012! It is owned by two sisters, Carla and Christine Pallotta, who have been inspired by their grandmother, mother, and travels through Italy to create a beautiful, delicious wine bar and restaurant.

Nebo Boston

Our dinner at Nebo happened on a 90 degree evening, so we both cooled off with a rosé wine from Planeta, one of my favorites, and a stop on my dream vacation to Sicily. Pretty, pink, cool, with flavors of ripe strawberries and rose petals, this wine, like all Planeta wines, was delightful.

Planeta wine

We had a hard time deciding on what to order from Nebo’s extensive menu and eventually decided to share a few things. To start, we had the bruschette ricotta: nebo fig spread, ricotta, prosciutto di parma, all which went perfectly with the wine. The salty meat and sweet fig spread were a big hit with both of us. As with the rest of our meal, the portion size for the price provided some really outstanding value which is always a reason to return.

bruschetta

We split two entrees; of course we had to try the winner of the Bobby Flay Throwdown, zucchini lasagna which was made up of layered zucchini, homemade ricotta, mozzarella, romano, marinara sauce. We also ordered the pappardelle alla Bolognese: slow braised meat ragù, tomato, cream, pecorino romano. Both dishes were hearty and made with a fresh, tangy tomato sauce. The pappardelle was to-die-for; it doesn’t get much better than homemade pasta!  And we could totally tell why the zucchini lasagna was a winner. My meat-loving husband actually liked that dish even better than the Bolognese. We ended up with two sizeable portions to bring home for lunch the next day.

dinner at Nebo

We were fairly full by the time the dessert menu came along, but Nebo offers a simple favorite, affogato, so we had to share it. Fluffy, creamy vanilla bean gelato mixed with rich, hot espresso? Dreamy. It was just the right amount of sweet to end the night.

The service at Nebo was fantastic. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us several times without being too pushy. It was the perfect place for a relaxing date. With so many menu items to try, Nebo will be seeing us again!

Did you eat anywhere delicious this weekend?

Moet and cupcakes. Cupcakes and Moet. And lots and lots of pink. It’s a girly paradise, the place you want to meet with your friends to catch up over a fancy latte and a cupcake or six. It’s Boston’s brand new cupcake shop, Georgetown Cupcake Newbury, brought to you by the ladies from the original Georgetown Cupcake and the TLC show DC Cupcakes, and it is fabulous. It would be the perfect place to stop with a bridal party or baby shower or just with a group of girlfriends as I did last Thursday.

Georgetown Cupcakes

What’s even more fabulous is attending a cupcake party with friends on a sunny Thursday evening. I had plans to meet Megan, Elizabeth, Bianca, and Emily at Georgetown Cupcake and also ran into Fiona and Melissa. It was a packed house with a huge turnout to welcome Katherine and Sophie to Boston. They, in turn, provided us with nonstop deliciousness. Georgetown Cupcakes

First, lets starts with the Georgetown Cupcake Newbury space. Located at 83 Newbury Street, the cupcake shop is a long, narrow space decorated with lots of pink and pretty things, like this crystal-encrusted Kitchenaid mixer.

Sophie and Katherine greeted us at the door, dressed to go with the décor of their beautiful new shop. They were absolutely lovely.

Once inside, a display of beautiful cupcakes also greeted us.

Along with servers offering glasses of Moet. . .

And a bustling staff making sure the cupcakes kept coming. We got to go right back into the kitchen to see the behind-the-scenes action. Once we took a little tour, we headed back down to the party to mingle and, more importantly, eat cupcakes.

As you can see, the pink lighting adds a soft glow to the entire space. It made for a great location for an event and made for some interesting food photos!

Georgetown Cupcakes Newbury Opening

Ready, set, go! Once the cupcakes started coming, they didn’t really stop. Here we have chocolate coconut and salted caramel. The chocolate coconut, with a cream cheese frosting topped with a generous amount of shredded coconut, is definitely a new favorite for me.

My other favorite of the evening was the chocolate peanut butter. We also sampled chocolate and Boston creme,

And cookies and cream.

After we’d sampled our fair share of mini cupcakes (Definitely go with friends so you can have lots of small bites!), we made our way through the crowds and out to the door, where Georgetown Cupcake made sure we didn’t leave empty-handed.

gift bags

The swag bags were amazing, stocked with a hat, t-shirt, mug, travel mug, a copy of The Cupcake Diaries AND a gift card for a dozen cupcakes. Oh yeah, and the half dozen cupcakes we were all gifted on the way out. Sweet!

Georgetown Cupcakes

The gift bag was so generous, in fact, that I thought it would be a shame to keep it all to myself. Since I can’t ship you cupcakes (um, and I have already eaten them), I am giving one lucky ready my copy of The Cupcake Diaries.

To enter, just leave a comment letting me know what your favorite cupcake combo is. If you’ve been to Georgetown Cupcakes, give them a shout out too!

I’ll choose a winner on Friday; good luck!

And so many thanks to Georgetown Cupcakes

One of the highlights of our girls’ weekend was definitely dinner at The Blue Room in Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

The Blue Room

From start to finish, we were treated like VIPs, starting with a coveted table on The Blue Room’s beautiful patio. The space is urban yet secluded, and it is definitely one to add to my patio dining list. The wine list, atmosphere, service, and food all made our dinner at The Blue Room one of the best dining experiences in recent memory

The Blue Room

The Blue Room has an incredible by the glass and bottle selection of wines, including an impressive array of rosé wines.

wine by the glass

Our server and the hostess kindly started us off with glasses of cava rosado, a pretty, fresh pink bubbly with lots of bright fruit flavors.

We were also treated to these cheese gougeres to pair with the cava, which turned out to be one of the best food and wine pairings I have ever had. The gooey, tangy cheese and light pastry were perfect with the cava.

gougeres

As food bloggers and people who love to eat, we were all excited to browse the menu, and surprisingly, we decided on starters fairly quickly.

We also decided on more pink bubbly, this time a Cremant de Loire from Domaine de la Bergerie. Tiny bubbles and a nice acidity made this wine a great pairing for all of our starters.

octopus

{Wood Grilled Octopus and Squid}

This was some of the best octopus I have ever eaten. There was not a hint of toughness to it, and I seriously went to town mopping up the zesty sauce that was underneath.

The Blue Room surprised us with more treats, this blood sausage paired with Txakoli, a Basque wine from Spain. I’m not normally a blood sausage fan, but I wanted to give this a try with the wine, and I really enjoyed it. blood sausage

tomato basil soup

The surprises kept coming. Chef sent out this chilled tomato and basil soup for us. It was richly flavored with basil and very smooth, a soup I could easily eat all summer long.

After all of that, we still had entrees. To go with our main courses, I ordered an old favorite, Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare. I’ve been a Bonny Doon fan since our visit to the tasting room last year, and the Vin Gris, another rosé, is a favorite of mine.

clams

{Wild Duxbury Clams}

Ever since the weather started getting nicer, I have had a major shellfish craving, so I went with the local clams, topped with generous portions of grilled bread for dipping. The broth was simple but flavorful, and the clams, just like the octopus, cooked to tender perfection.

I also stole a few bites of Daisy’s faro. Doesn’t that look beautiful?

dessert

We were thisclose to skipping dessert, but we decided to share the chocolate terrine. To add a sweet ending to our evening, The Blue Room sent out a little dessert sampler as well. By that point, I could barely fit another bite, and I know that I need to return soon.

The Blue Room really treated us like special guests and made the night spectacular. I can’t recommend them enough for a special occasion or date night dinner, and I hear that their lunch grill is fantastic as well.

We worked our dinner off by dancing the night away at Naga, the nightclub portion of Moksa. You won’t be seeing any photos of that. Winking smile  It was a lot of fun, and I would also definitely go back to Naga. I LOVE dancing.

Many thanks to The Blue Room for taking such good care of us. They are truly a top notch team.

What’s your favorite place for a night out with friends? Date night?
