You all know I love bubbly, but I’ll let you in on a little secret; Prosecco isn’t always my favorite. But then again, up until recently, I didn’t really know Prosecco. For me, Prosecco always brought to mind a pear-flavored, sort-of-sweet wine.

All of that changed a few weeks ago when I attended a Prosecco Superiore seminar at The Middle Gray in Brookline (which I love, by the way). It was a great afternoon of learning and tasting, and below are some of the highlights.

There’s more than one Prosecco. Did you know that? There are actually three designated types of Prosecco, and they are classified based on where the grapes are grown. Prosecco Superiore comes from Conegliano Valdobbiadene, a hilly area in North-East Italy, 50 km from Venice and around 100 from the Dolomites. Here, for over three centuries, people have grown the grapes that produce Prosecco Superiore, whose success began with the founding of Italy’s first School of Winemaking in 1876. The wine is hand-harvested only, due to the extremely steep nature of the hillsides. The vineyards have been so trained and shaped to the contours of the land that the area is being considered being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Below you can see the buckets of grapes being moved from the vineyards. It’s a precarious undertaking! Unfortunately my camera failed me during the event, but there were some gorgeous photos. The region looks absolutely stunning.

Prosecco Superiore can be dry or sweet or anything in between. Prosecco that is called dry is actually the sweetest, and the Brut Prosecco is the least sweet. As I mentioned above, I expect Prosecco to be sweet and was surprised at how most of the ones we tried were not.

We also learned that there are three types of Prosecco when it comes to bubbles; spumante (sparkling), frizzante (fizzy), and tranquilo (still). Still Prosecco, you might ask? Yes! Tranquilo is actually the oldest but least known type of Prosecco.

We tasted the following wines. With so many wines, so much information, and great conversation with the group about food, travel, and wine, I was once again bad at tasting notes. I will let you know that I enjoyed all of the wines we tasted and would absolutely seek out the Brut Proseccos for future enjoying. Prosecco, even at top quality, is a great value and food-friendly, making these wines approachable and appropriate for everyday, not just special occasions!

Merry and bright, that’s the way the season should be, and that is exactly how I want my holiday sparkling wine. It doesn’t hurt when that wine is also under $15. As we settle into our lives in Lower Mills and celebrated our year anniversary in our house this past weekend, we got a chance to toast with wine from Esprit du Vin, our favorite local wine shop. The store’s owner is so friendly, much like everyone else we have encountered in Dorchester/Milton Lower Mills. He always has suggestions on wines and excellent cheeses in the shop, as well as where to get pizza and other items in the village. And he knows everyone.

Mas Fi Cava We discovered this Mas fi cava at Esprit du Vin over the summer when looking for a fun boat wine. I truly believe that good bubbly comes at all price points and from many regions, so it was easy to give this one a shot. It ended up being even easier to drink.

Mas fi cava is from Pendes, Spain (and I am dreaming of a cava tour of Spain someday soon) and is delightfully dry with crisp notes of citrus fruits and persistent bubbles. It is such a festive wine that pairs excellently with food or just with good times. We sipped ours while decorating the Christmas tree in front of a fire and counting our many blessings. This cava would be a great alternative to Champagne on New Year’s Eve and would be amazing with food like oysters and shrimp as well as with richer items like flatbread and your favorite truffle mac and cheese. I truly believe that bubbly goes with everything. No one has proven me wrong yet.

Dom Pérignon Champagne

This is the first time and likely the last time that Dom Pérignon Champagne graces the pages of this little food, wine, and travel blog, but I am going to soak up every sip. Yesterday we closed on a property that caused us headaches and stress for eight years. You can get a little glimpse in my “Meet the Neighbors” post; it barely scratches the surface of the crazy we have dealt with, but it’s a fun read.

Some very special friends gave us this bottle of Dom as a housewarming gift, and we instantly knew that getting rid of our old property was the occasion to open it. With baited breath, my husband popped the cork, and it was quiet! However, when it was time to pour, bubbles flowed out like stars and were persistent throughout each delightful sip of Champagne. This Champagne can only be described as rich, complex, and completely divine. That’s not enough of a tasting note, I know, so I leave you with the tasting notes from the Dom Pérignon website. We were pretty excited to be able to celebrate such a milestone with such an iconic wine!
