Chateau Montelena 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

Our quick trip to Portland, Maine this weekend included a late dinner at the much-loved Fore Street, a restaurant I hadn’t visited since a trip to Portland too many years ago. After getting settled in our home for the night,  we made it to Fore Street right before the kitchen closed, and those choosing the wine did an excellent job picking a bottle of 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Montelena. I love the wine from Montelena, I love their winery and tasting room, and of course, I love the movie Bottle Shock so I was more than a little excited when this ended up in my glass.

Right at home in the candlelit glow and rustic wood of Fore Street, this wine is big, smooth,  and inviting,  Well developed tannins aren’t overpowering and are balanced by bright, berry sweetness that paired well with my pork belly entree and great company. Chateau Montelena makes classic, luxurious wines that are special-occasion worthy, but they’re also perfect for nights with great food and lots of laughs, those little moments that make life worth living.

Summer weather calls for patio dining, cold cocktails, and lots of seafood. Coastal living is at its best this time of year, and Boston chefs are certainly doing a good job showcasing the bounty of our beautiful seas.

Select Oyster Bar

From the first time I heard about Select Oyster Bar, I couldn’t wait to try it. I absolutely loved Neptune Oyster when Chef Serpa was there (worst photos in a blog post EVER) and attended a delicious Backyard Farms event where he made an amazing lobster Caprese. When two of my favorite ladies and I decided to get together for dinner, Select was at the top of our list.

We got a coveted seat on their small patio behind the restaurant and tucked into the menus, definitely having a difficult time not choosing everything. We started with a round of cocktails, mine, a classic and refreshing Hemingway Daiquiri.

cocktails

We proceeded to share a bunch of plates, each of which surprised and delighted us with unique flavors and freshness.

salmon crudo

Salmon Crudo with Pistachio Oil and Lime was tender and tart, nice and light for a warm summery evening.

lobster salad

The dressed lobster let the Maine lobster be the star of the show, with hints of lemon and herbs, a simple, luxurious dish.

Oysters

We had to have oysters at Select Oyster Bar, and we chose a selection of mostly East Coast oysters with three Kumamoto oysters thrown in for balance. Wellfleet and Island Creek oysters proved once again to be my favorite, briny, slightly creamy, the taste of summer.

octopus

The octopus was a standout for me. I love grilled octopus, and this was perfection.

squid

We were all really excited about the squid special, but it was the least favorite item of the night. It was still good, but not something we would order again, given the selection.

hamachi

Flash Seared Hamachi was another favorite. Its meatiness paired well with lime slaw and whipped avocado.

bubbly and lobster Select has a great wine list with interesting and affordable choices by the glass and bottle. We toasted with a bottle of Mercat Cava, which was great with all of the seafood dishes and fun for a Thursday night celebrating nice weather and friends.

I would return to Select Oyster Bar again and again, for oysters and cocktails and to try all of the menu items that we missed. It’s a great addition to the Boston dining scene.

Happy Wine Wednesday! A short week makes it feel a little like a Tuesday while a very busy one makes it feel like today should be Saturday. I can’t complain because it’s warm out, and I have some exciting things on the horizon.

Every now and then life shakes things up a little when you least expect it, and that can be a very good thing.  Over the past few months, several projects and consulting opportunities started to come my way, and I started trying, one-by-one to take them on in addition to my in-house role. That pretty quickly became too much for someone with only 24 hours in a day (Seriously, why can’t we add more? I want to do everything. )

Charles de Cazanove Champagne Tet de Cuvee

The final push was that one of those opportunities was in the wine industry supporting an event in one of the places I love the most in the world. The decision quickly became a clear one, and we were celebrating even before my official plans were in place. We picked up this 750 ml bottle of Charles de Cazanove Tete De Cuvee Brut Champagne at a Bin Ends event, feeling like a warm spring night and a great opportunity were more than enough reason to start celebrating. This Champagne is everything I love about Champagne; that brioche and biscuit warmth and yeastiness, loads of tiny bubbles that make you smile (and sneeze!), acidity and lemon notes, kind of like lemon meringue pie. We sat in our back yard on the swings and talked all about how life is full of opportunity and how difficult it can be to leave a place and people you really admire and respect.

In one week, I will pack it up at the place where I’ve spent the last two years, learned so much, made memories, and seen some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, and I will be out on my own once again, a new schedule, home office, clients, and exciting work.

If you know of someone looking for a Marketing/Social Media/PR Consultant, let me know! You can find out more about my background here.  As I take this scary step, I know there can never be too much work!

I’m putting the finishing touches on my home office and really excited for the future. I know that some of my work travels will cross over into the blog, and it should be a good time all around. Thanks for sticking around for the ride.
