Mas Belles Eaux Les Coteaux 2009

Switching it up this Wine Wednesday after a little trip to Sonoma and Napa yesterday! Today we travel to the Languedoc region in the South of France. I recently received a sample of  Mas Belles Eaux Les Coteaux 2009. I loved this wine before I even opened it; sometimes tasting notes can sway me that way, though the proof is in the bottle of course.

I don’t have a ton of experience with Languedoc wines, so I was interested first in reading up on some of the information on Mas Belles Eaux:

Mas Belles Eaux in Languedoc, South of France, is a new winery,  owned by AXA Millésimes, whose word-famous properties include Chateau Pichon-Longueville (Paulliac), Quinta do Noval (Port) and Chateau Suduiraud (Sauternes). Languedoc is France’s most dynam-ic wine region, where adventurous producers, with fewer constraints than in most other regions, are challenging tradition and improving quality with every vintage. According to Christian Seely, Managing

Mas Belles Eaux, with a building dating back to the 17th century (when Mollière and his theatre troupe were based in a neighboring town) side by side with a  state of the art winery (built in 2008) – is emblematic of the region and  AXA’s investment is an important recognition of Languedoc’s growing importance and quality.

The wine, Les Coteaux 2009 is a blend of 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, and 10% Mourvedre, three of my favorite grapes, and it exhibits some of the richest, smoothest, most luxurious qualities they have to offer. There was so much cocoa and spice, wrapped up in notes of blackberries and dark cherries. Everything was very concentrated and super smooth; this is a perfect fireplace wine. It would pair nicely with (and be delicious in) a hearty beef stew or cassoulet. It would also be delicious in the Syrah Chocolate Cupcakes I made too many years ago. Yum. As you know I am not a huge fan of the cold and darkness that is creeping in but I do get excited about wines like this and the perfect food pairings to ward off an autumn chill.

This wine was sent to me as a sample. I was not required to review it. All opinions are my own.

Let’s take it back to the North Fork of Long Island for this Wine Wednesday, shall we? The Wine of the Week is perfect for a tailgate, and since it’s that time of year, even though I don’t watch football, I can play along with football food and drink, especially if it includes good wine.

Our summer felt like it began in April when we visited the North Fork  for some wine tasting. We got to spend time by the sea and at farms and at wineries; it was exactly the tone I wanted our summer to have, and we succeeded.

Castello di Borghese Merlot

We took a really fun winery tour at one of Long Island’s oldest wineries, Castello di Borghese, where we got to see where the wine is made and stored as well as where the grapes were grown. We also got to take away some beautiful dried lavender, an inspiration for my own gardening. We recently cracked open a 2010 Reserve Merlot from Castello di Borghese, and we were speechless. Time had passed since our trip, and we had forgotten how beautiful this wine is. It’s super velvety smooth and elegant, exhibiting notes of berry and cocoa, perfect for sipping slowly and pairing with food like a chipotle chocolate chili or a really good BBQ. See? I told you I could bring wine country to football food.

Castello di Borghese

Castello di Borghese is a must-visit winery on the North Fork; if you find yourself planning a trip definitely leave yourself some extra time to be sure you take the tour and taste through all of their wines. I think a North Fork trip would be perfect in the fall, with fewer crowds, cozy fireplaces, and lovely foliage. I just wish I had more free weekends for all of the fall travel I want to do!

Happy Wine Wednesday!

Happy Wine Wednesday! I’m in between not wanting to rush the summer but wanting to have the weekend back again, pretty much always. Add to that the trip to Sonoma that we booked back in May, and well, I have had a hard time concentrating whenever I am inside.

Luckily, work has been busy and fun, and I  have a lot of blog stuff happening, including a few tasty wine samples I get to share with friends and wine reviews to share with all of you.

Chateau Timberlay Bordeaux Blanc 2012

This Chateau Timberlay White Bordeaux is this week’s Wine of the Week because it is, like many of the wines I have featured, a perfect summer wine. I don’t drink Bordeaux wines enough, and I am always so glad when I receive an introduction such as this one.

Chateau Timberlay is one of the oldest chateau in Bordeaux produces estate grown Bordeaux wines with an ecological and terroir driven philosophy. This right bank property in Saint-Andre-du Cuzbac sits right at the 45th parallel, exactly equidistant between the equator and the North Pole in ideal vine growing terroir. (source)

I loved the yellow/green color of this wine; it reminded me of spring flowers. The wine is made of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillion grapes, giving it both floral notes as well as some citrus notes and a gentle acidity. We actually paired this with a dandelion green salad with a honey balsamic dressing, and the acidity and lemony flavors helped to balance out the bitterness of the greens. Delicious!

This wine was sent to me as a sample; all opinions are my own.

You may have also noticed a new widget on my left sidebar. I am excited to be helping The Wine Road of Northern Sonoma to help promote California Wine Month, which is the month of September. I’m excited to share events and information on California Wine Month and perhaps even to get you all to try new California wines.

Enjoy the day!
