I love food, I love wine, I love to cook, I love events and eating out, and I love to write. You probably already knew that, considering the food and wine blog and all, but while steaming artichokes, chopping lemons, and photographing the whole process last night it hit me. Months ago, my focus was blog traffic, and it made me miserable. I spent so much time trying to figure out what other people wanted to read that I forgot what I wanted to write about.

Slowly, somewhere along the way, I rediscovered the joy in writing. It may have been in Sonoma or Napa or attending various wine tasting events or delicious dinners, or it may have just been in my own kitchen. All I know is that hello, I am happy to be here and ready to do more!

As you know, today begins the Eat from Home Challenge, an effort to save money, waste less packaging, eat healthier, and in general get my kitchen mojo back after the marathon. I appreciate all of the support you offered in this challenge which I actually think will be a little difficult. I love going out. I feel like it gives me something to look forward to during the week, and it is always a great option when you are too tired. Still, recommitting myself to my kitchen is a good thing, and I can’t wait to get creative.

With ingredients like these strawberries and artichokes that we picked up at Trader Joe’s, I think it will also be a delicious challenge.

Sunday was NOT part of the challenge, so we went to the Bin Ends Fine Wine Flea Market, a magical wine tasting event which usually houses 9-10 different tables with 5-7 different wines for tasting and ordering. I have found so many wines that I love this way. (past Bin Ends posts here and here)

I will post more on our wine purchases later, but I did fall in love with a new Italian Cabernet Franc and a delicioso sparkling wine made from the Malvasia grape. I am working on my grape Century Club membership (having tasted wine from at least 100 grapes), and I am about 70 into it and tried 2 new ones today. Not too shabby. Bin Ends is a great environment for this pursuit!

After Bin Ends, all I wanted were oysters. I have actually had an oyster craving since pre-marathon but thought it prudent to avoid raw seafood for a few days prior just in case.

We tried Barbara Lynch’s B & G Oyster in the South End, a mecca for all things oyster, but they were closed for a private event. Luckily, Eastern Standard saved the day.

It was a patio kind of day, and an Anchor Steam from San Francisco hit the spot.

We also had the cheese plate which included a Manchego, a Gorgonzola Picante, and a Brie cheese along with quince paste, candied bacon, and Nicoise olives.

It wasn’t really lunch, and it wasn’t really dinner, so we ordered homemade potato chips and onion dip. SO GOOD.

We also satisfied my Island Creek oyster craving with a dozen oysters complete with cocktail sauce and mignonette. Delicious and briny, they hit the spot! I could live on oysters!

When I got home, I decided to dive into the artichokes that I bought, so I trimmed them, boiled them, and ate every last leaf and heart, some plain and some dipped in a mix of mayonnaise, lemon, and spicy mustard.

Artichokes take forever to eat, but they are so incredibly meaty and delicious!

We ended the night eating homemade pizza, guacamole, roasted veggies, and other treats at our friend Michael and Jill’s house. We popped open one of my birthday wines, a 1980 Beaulieu Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, and once decanted and aerated, it was delicious! We were celebrating 2 engagements, a new job, a birthday, and the marathon, so a special wine was in order! 🙂

And here we are starting a brand new week full of possibilities and challenges! I hope you are all well rested and ready for the week and as excited about something as I am about blogging.

AND I hope you have entered my Cabot cheese giveaway! This giveaway closes on Wednesday, and it is too good to pass up!

On Saturday night, my friends and I celebrated my birthday at Woodward, the new restaurant at the Ames Hotel in downtown Boston. We started with a round of cocktails which we drank while looking over a “through the years” photo album that my friend Meghan put together. The photos were funny and pretty embarrassing! Some of the hair and fashion choices that I have made over the last 11 years were awful. It was fun to think about all we have been through together though and to relive our college and post-college days living in Boston.

Instead of bread, Woodward gives diners a bowl of house pickled veggies and fruit. I enjoyed the pickled cukes and carrots, but thought that the watermelon was a little odd.

Our server suggested that we order a bunch of different dishes to share, and the kitchen sends things out as they are made. I love this approach to serving and eating food, especially with friends or family. We started with my favorite,  incredibly fresh Island Creek oysters with a spicy ginger mignonette.

mussels

Next up, mussels with white wine, pickled garlic, and preserved lemon. The mussels were perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth, and swimming in a lemony, buttery sauce. Luckily they included toasted bread for dipping. I could have seriously picked up the bowl of mussels to drink the broth.

steak and scallops

For our larger dishes, my friend Raija (of the Hollandaise sauce post) had the hangar steak with crispy frites, I ordered the scallops with warmed greens and pickled citrus vinaigrette, and my friend Meghan (the writer of the Cinque Terre post) had the roast chicken with the creamiest most decadent potatoes ever.

Everything was delicious. I didn’t get a photo, but we finished up with the chocolate and almond bread pudding. It was rich, delicious, and perfect for 3 people to share. It was a great meal. I would say that the only downside was that the service was a little TOO overbearing, and toward the end we felt rushed despite several empty tables in our vicinity.

We followed our dinner with drinks at Drink which has quickly become my favorite bar in Boston. I love how fresh and homemade everything is.

I enjoyed a gingery Dark & Stormy. It was delicious!

All in all it was a great night out. Woodward is a must visit location in Boston, and I am looking forward to bringing my husband there soon!

Following our visit to Rodney Strong, checking into Vintners Inn, and walking around the vineyard, we decided to eat on the hotel property at John Ash & Co. Luckily, although it was last minute, they were able to seat us at a table overlooking the vineyard.

The welcome we received from the restaurant staff was second to none, and the Food and Beverage Manager really made us feel right at home.

I wanted just about everything on the menu which featured many fresh, local ingredients, and variety of flavors and styles of cuisine.

With the hot day that was in it and the celebratory mood of the weekend, I started with a glass of sparkling wine from the Roederer Estate in the Anderson Valley.

We were brought cornbread with a creamy, delicious butter. The cornbread had jalapenos in it! Oh my yum. I need to make jalapeno cornbread soon.

The amuse bouche was a bit of plump, tender crab, topped with whipped avocado.

We also started with Hog Island oysters with three different sauces, a lemon granita, a “hogwash” mignonette, and cocktail sauce. Its so interesting to note the differences in appearance and flavor between East and West coast oysters. I like them all!

For our main meal, we stuck with a selection of appetizers. They were all light, but together made a healthy, filling meal. First there was the Spicy Salmon Sushi Roll with sriracha, ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce.

Then the Roasted Red & Yellow Beet Salad with fennel, avocado, red wine vinaigrette and Bohemian Creamery capriago cheese.

We finished with “Petaluma Poultry Rocky” Chicken Lettuce Wraps with green onions, peanuts, cilantro, and Asian dipping sauce.

We were too full for dessert at the restaurant, so we took a piece of Guinness chocolate cake to go and ate it in the big comfy bed. I am SO glad that we decided to stay on the hotel property for dinner. We were on East coast time and tired, plus the food and service turned out to be exactly what we wanted.

In fact, we liked John Ash & Co. so much that we also finished off my birthday there. More on all of the birthday eating and wine tasting later, but since we are on the subject of John Ash & Co., we did go there for a drink in the lounge at the end of my birthday.

I had the “Tiny Bubbles” flight.

I do love my bubbly! 😉

It was pretty amazing to have such a delicious restaurant on site and within about 3 minutes’ walking distance from our hotel room. It made it very easy for us to enjoy some time out without having to get in the car. Perfect!

John Ash & Co. is another great reason to stay at Vintner’s Inn.

In case you are new to the blog or haven’t checked it out, my ALLY Foundation raffle is extended, but I need to finish my fundraising very soon. I am half way there, and I would LOVE to make my $3000 minimum before April 1. Every little bit counts, and the prizes are pretty great!
