Summer Weekend

Just a few photos from a beautiful summer weekend in Massachusetts, the best place to be this time of year!

Peaches at the Ashmont Farmers Market – now that I work from home I can get there before it closes, and I love it. I love that it’s another little piece of our community that brings people together for food and fellowship while supporting Massachusetts farmers and other producers.

Wine grapes at Westport Rivers – every summer I try to make at least one visit to Westport Rivers (last year for their sunset music series, well worth a visit). We were blessed with a sunny, blue sky, glorious day for drinking bubbles in the vineyard.

Lobster on a burger at the Bayside in Westport – We visited the Bayside last year, and we were happy to return this year. The food is SO good, and it has gorgeous beach views.

We made the most of the perfect day with some jumping and swimming in a warm and salty sea. If I could swim in the ocean every day, I would be very happy.

Hull Harbor Illumination – I love going to this annual event which lights up Hull Harbor in flares for the Hull Lifesaving Museum. Once again we sat at the Sea Dog and watched the sun go down and the lights go up, a perfect way to spend the night with family visiting from Ireland.

Sunday was spent with friends, breakfast with one set of friends and their new baby and then later on dinner with another set of friends at Kama Lounge in Quincy. They do dollar oysters on Sunday nights, along with half priced appetizers during their happy hour. Everything we ate was so delicious, especially these clam chowder poutine fries. Sinful, and now I definitely need that 14 mile run this week!

We finished the weekend out on Wollaston Beach with a perfect sunset and ice cream. Tired, happy, and with sandy feet, we went home to get ready for the work week.

A Midsummer Night’s Feast

I don’t know about you, but my summer weekends are usually completely booked by early April, and then I start to panic that I won’t be able to fit in everything I want in the best season ever. My summer this year is far busier than those past. An overnight in Portland on Nova Star was followed by a weekend at the Cape which was followed by a trip to Sonoma County which was followed by a long weekend in NJ. Soon we’ll be off for some time in Ireland, followed by some other weekends away, another trip to Sonoma, and a trip to Chicago for the Chicago Marathon. I am tired just thinking about it, and while I am super excited for all the travel, I am sad to miss events like A Midsummer Night’s Feast.

This event looks like the most perfect way to spend a midsummer night to me, after a day at the beach, of course. Put on by Tigerlily’s Events, the description of the event is below. I’ll be keeping an eye on future events to share (and hopefully attend!); please feel free to let me know your favorite local food and wine events!

Coastal Living at its Finest

That’s Massachusetts for you. Just when you think you’ve discovered all of your favorite MA beaches, seaside towns, and waterside watering holes, friends have suggestions for more, and locals lead you in new directions. The possibilities of summer in Massachusetts are endless; why is the season so short?! Next year, we are taking a week off for a staycation. I long to have extra days to sip and linger at Westport Rivers Sunset Music Series and trips to Horseneck Beach and to camp at Spectacle Island or hike at World’s End, to take the ferry to Provincetown, not to mention to indulge in the bounty of the sea and local farms. It is summer, and I am in my annual love affair with Massachusetts.

Our July 3 truly felt like a holiday. We got together with friends and headed North to the sweet town of Ipswich where we were introduced to Salt Kitchen & Rum Bar and instantly saw why it is a local favorite. And it’s not just because they offer so many different types of rums, including local option Privateer. The interior is adorably coastal and rustic, staff is friendly and warm, and the food was delicious.

I loved my Big Foot cocktail, which included Ragged Mountain Rum, Chipotle Maple Syrup, and Lime, for a sweet and spicy kick.

For lunch I indulged in the Lobster Wellington, which was amazing, with its tender sweet lobster and corn in a flaky puff pastry, served with a salad to balance it out.

During lunch we learned that our destination, Crane Beach, was at capacity, which 1) made it impossible to go there but 2) made us not really want to even attempt it if it was that crowded. Luckily, bartenders and bar patrons always have the best knowledge, and we were on our way to a hidden gem of a beach nearby that turned out to be even better than our first choice. The water and sky were perfectly blue, and it felt so good to be on the hot sand. The water, on the other hand, was a little chilly, as you can see from my bracing below. Still, it was all so perfect, the quintessential New England summer day, so very welcome after a hellish winter.

Since laying at the beach works up quite an appetite, we stopped at CK Pearl on our way home. This was another new-to-us spot, and it is a new favorite. The deck is right on the water, providing great views of beautiful nature and boats.

Our waterside feast included Octopus Carpaccio and oysters, paired with bubbly, of course. CK Pearl is an amazing spot to relax, and it’s right across the street from the famous Woodman’s if you also need a fried clam fix. We’ll definitely be back this summer.

I took a little over a week off from blogging to visit family, get lots of work done, and enjoy a holiday weekend, and I am now excited and refreshed and looking forward to catching up on all of your blogs and updating my own.
