Lunch

Sometimes the best laid plans are no plans at all. This past Friday, I finally took the leap and took a half day off. No one told me how difficult it would be to walk away from your work when you work for yourself, but it is pretty daunting. It feels like the second you step away, everything could come crashing down and be gone when you get back. Hence the 12 hours at the computer per day.

But, it is summer for not much longer, and I decided it was time to enjoy a leisurely afternoon. The initial plan was to meet Daisy and Megan for some rooftop sunning at the Colonnade, but changes in plans, and ultimately crazy storms ended that.

Instead I met Megan in town, and we wandered up Boylston Street looking for lunch. When we happened upon L’Espalier, they had room for us, AND they were featuring a three course Restaurant Week lunch menu, we looked no further.

Lunch at L'Espalier

Since I was on “vacation”, at least for the afternoon, we decided to add two wine pairings to our lunch. For $14, the wine pairings were a steal, especially in such an elegant and high-end space.

For the first course, we both had the Apple Street Heirloom Tomato Salad with chevre panna cotta.

For our first wine pairing, our server suggested bubbly, and who were we to say no? Winking smile Starting a meal off with a glass of sparkling wine is always a delight, and the Louis Bouillot Crémant de Bourgogne was a perfect pairing. The panna cotta in the dish was light but had that goat cheese tang that really added a lot of flavor to the dish. It was beautiful to look at and to eat.

For my second course, I had the perfectly cooked salmon with ratatouille. The salmon was flavorful with a crisp skin and certainly cooked to order, something that does not always happen during Restaurant Week. Clearly, L’Espalier does not lower their standards though they are offering such an exceptional deal.

My wine pairing was a Poggio Amorelli Chianti Classico. I enjoyed the wine, but I felt as though it might have overwhelmed the flavors of the salmon just a bit.

I was eating lunch with Megan, so of course dessert was a must. Both of these dessert photos are courtesy of her post.

I tried to take my own photos, but as Megan mentioned, the weather from the time we arrived and ate lunch to when dessert arrived changed from humid, sunny summer day to a complete downpour, dark skies, and thunder.

We each ordered one of the dessert options, wild strawberry-vanilla mousse with lychee foam and raspberry-balsamic vinaigrette and an untraditional sachertorte which was far prettier than the sachertorte I made last winter.

I liked the fresh, lightness of the strawberry dessert. The strawberries themselves were summer perfection, and the layers beneath took their cue from the berries.

The sachertorte had that dense, somewhat dry, crumbly chocolate characteristic of the traditional Austrian delight, but was paired with mango gel which was an interesting twist. While I enjoyed this dessert, and I am all for innovation, I will be very honest in that I prefer a slice of the sachertorte as the Hotel Sacher does it. Preferably AT the Hotel Sacher. Smile

L’Espalier does Restaurant Week right, with the same level of service and food as they always offer. It was my first time at the restaurant, but I was incredibly impressed, and despite being dressed in my beachy best, felt elegant and important, just by the way the staff treated us.

Summer makes blogging easier. The light is great, and the ingredients, local produce, make for great photos with no work. It also makes eating easier. The elegant, fresh flavors of summer fruits and vegetables lend themselves to quick meals without much fuss, almost as if nature planned it that way. . . I just need to find a place where it is like this year round!

As you know, I have been working mostly from home, but this week I started a contract job that has me in the office more. And that means making lunch again. Summer helped make that a no-brainer. A fresh, light, and veggie-packed pasta salad was my first thought, and it was a good one.

orecchiette

I started with about 3/4 bag of Trader Joe’s orecchiette, the little ear shaped pasta. I really like tiny pastas in pasta salad. I got the water boiling and the pasta cooking while I prepped the rest of my simple recipe.

An entire shallot, finely diced, went into the pan.

shallot

It joined a large zucchini, two small summer squashes, and grape tomatoes, all from Trader Joe’s, and all local or semi-local, at the very least grown somewhere in the US, an option that my Shaw’s just does not offer. Does it ever completely enrage you that, even in the height of the season, we import veggies and fruits from everywhere but our local farmers? Hello, economy fix. Let’s support businesses in our communities!

vegetables

Anyhow. . . once the pasta was cooked, I mixed it in with the vegetables and four triangles of Laughing Cow garlic & herb cheese. For a light cheese, which I normally would laugh at, I actually think Laughing Cow is good, and mixed in with the veggies and pasta, it made a nice cream “sauce”. Yummy.

I forgot to take a photo of the final product, but it was great! It made for a lunch I looked forward to, and for me, that is the ultimate test of a lunch recipe.

This pasta salad would make a great vegetarian side dish or main dish for a summer BBQ, as long as it isn’t kept out in the sun too long!

What did you have for lunch at work this week? Anything delicious?

Of all of the things I did at Eat, Write, Retreat, EAT was definitely one of the things I did the most. Between the opening reception, Capitol Hill Food Tour, swag bag snacks, and free hotel breakfast, I wasn’t feeling hunger pangs that weekend!

McCormick & Schmick's

Saturday morning was busy, with a fabulous food writing session by Monica Bhide, and by the time that was over, we were ready for some sunshine and food.

Lunch was scheduled for a few blocks away at McCormick & Schmick’s, a seafood restaurant I have eaten at and enjoyed many times in Boston. The very warm and sunny walk was glorious, and we were welcomed to tables set just for us.

Mirassou wine

Mirassou provided the wine for the lunch. I love wine at lunch; it makes any occasion feel special, and it reminds me of being in Europe. In short, Americans should have more wine with lunch.

We started with a cool, sweet glass of Moscato and a warm welcome from the chef, who explained each course and told us a little bit about the farm fresh ingredients used.

McCormick & Schmick's

First up was an anchovy and roasted beet salad. It was beautifully plated with some lovely reduced balsamic vinegar. I did not care for the anchovies, but I did try them! I loved the sweet beets, greens, and the balsamic. I thought the Moscato was a little too sweet for the first course, but that could just be me. I still enjoyed it!

Next up was a flaky, fabulous wild halibut with mushrooms, baby bok choy, in a miso broth. Bok choy should definitely be used more often! The fresh halibut had a salty flavor from the miso, and the mushrooms really rounded the whole thing out with their earthiness. The fish was paired with Mirassou Pinot Noir, a great choice if you are having fish and dining with red wine lovers. Deep cherry flavors and a nice acidity made this a great wine for pairing with the main course.

Ooof. After all of that, there was more wine and dessert! Look.at.that.dessert. Strawberry rhubarb shortcake with a homemade biscuit was topped with mascarpone cream and vanilla ice cream and paired with a stunning Mirassou Riesling. I think the Moscato would have gone better with this little bowl of heaven, but with its crisp, stone fruit flavors the Riesling was a perfect wine for a hot day.

Our Eat, Write, Retreat swag bags included a couple of gift certificates to McCormick & Schmick’s, and I can’t wait to use them for oysters, chowder, and beers, my favorite things to get at the McCormick & Schmick’s bar.

Another win for the Eat, Write, Retreat attendees, and another huge thank you to the planners!

Are you a seafood fan? What is your favorite type/preparation?
