Every visit to Sligo absolutely thrills the English major in me. I concentrated in Irish literature (super useful in the real world) and spent a ton of time studying W.B. Yeats. Sligo is Yeats country, and his inspiration and words are everywhere.

Whenever we visit Ireland, we try to find a short side trip from Galway, whether it be to Kinsale or Northern Ireland or Rome or Prague. This time we stayed close to home and went up to Sligo to enjoy the inspiring Irish countryside, some spa time, and simple relaxation with my in-laws.

Ben Bulben

We stayed at the Radisson Blu in Sligo, and we absolutely loved it. The above was the view from our room. We have stayed in a few Radisson hotels, including in Edinburgh, and they are always really enjoyable. Like my favorite, the Radisson in Galway, the Sligo property had a lovely spa with a thermal suite, where we spent time unwinding after a long hike.

Our room, a junior suite, was well appointed and included free still and sparkling water, Nespresso, and a crazy big Irish breakfast buffet. The service in the lounge was very, very slow (probably a good thing since we drank less) but overall the staff were great and very friendly.

Sligo town is quaint and offers  lot of Yeats history, along with great pubs and restaurants. Just outside Sligo town lies W.B Yeats in the Drumcliffe Graveyard, his tombstone engraved with the famous words from the poem Under Ben Bulben : Cast a cold Eye On Life on Death Horseman pass by.

Yeats’ grave is outside a regular church, but there is a small craft and book shop and cafe on site. It’s well worth a visit if you are in the region.

And then there’s the natural beauty of Sligo. I haven’t seen the whole world, but I know that Ireland will always be one of its most beautiful places for me.

Rosses Point Sligo is a rugged seaside area where the wind and the waves and rocky cliffs come together to take your breath away.

Just a bit further inland, farms dot the landscape as they do in most of Ireland. You may want to smuggle home a new friend or two. . .

And then there’s Ben Bulben. Formed during the Ice Age, Ben Bulben’s crazy shape came from shifting glaciers. I have seen nothing like it. The mountain inspired Yeats, and he mentioned it in both Under Ben Bulben and The Celtic Twilight.

Ben Bulben also plays a big part in Irish legend and history, including in the Irish Civil War.

Ben Bulben

Nowadays Ben Bulben is a spectacular and magical place for a hike. You can’t help but stare it its strange formation and beauty. Even in late November, it was green and lush, dotted with fluffy sheep and surrounded by the cry of howling winds.

Ben Bulben Our walk along the base was all we could do; the mountain itself can be treacherous and with the winds we have, we opted not to climb. Our walk showed us all sorts of things though, including lichen and heather and beautiful wild birds.

It was the perfect stretch of the legs after a flight and a big meal at Ashford Castle.

Guinness and soup And there’s nothing better when in Ireland after a long, blustery walk than a pint of Guinness and a bowl of hot soup. The Yeats Country Hotel is cozy and beautiful with views of the sea and a crackling fireplace.  On a cloudy day, all bundled up inside, I struggled to stay awake after lunch.

Sligo is no doubt a dreamy place, and it’s easy to imagine the cranky poet and his pen. If you ever go to Ireland, I encourage you to go West. In the meantime I leave you with one of my favorite Yeats poems.

A Drinking Song

By William Butler Yeats 1865–1939

Wine comes in at the mouth

And love comes in at the eye;

That’s all we shall know for truth

Before we grow old and die.

I lift the glass to my mouth,

I look at you, and I sigh.

There are so many intersections where my work and blogging meet that it’s hard not to blog about work events all the time. To celebrate the re-launch of the newly renovated Royal Sonesta Boston, we recently held a small media reception that included tastes of each our the hotel’s food and beverage outlets as well as a peek into new meeting space and bites from the banquet menu.

The event was a fun one to plan, especially since I have gotten to know so much of Boston’s blogging community in all of my blogging years. And still there are so many Boston bloggers for me to meet!

We had a really fun group for the event, which kicked off in the hotel’s brand new waterfront meeting space. The views of the Charles and Boston skyline are some of the best available, and the mini crudités and cheese plates were a big hit.

After having small bites and wine with introductions, we moved on for a tour of the hotel lobby to our next stop, ArtBar.

ArtBar offers seasonal cuisine and craft cocktails, and we sampled their Apple Turnip Soup and Duck Liver Pate on Crostini, along with cocktails from the fall cocktail menu.

Our next stop was the well-known and loved Restaurant dante. You may have seen Chef Dante on top Chef recently. The restaurant serves some pretty amazing pastas and other Italian fare, we and we enjoyed some samples of their famous arancini and meatballs along with a delicious white wine.

Our final stop of the night was the Royal Sonesta’s brand new coffee and pastry shop, Studio, where we had cider cake pops, brownies, biscotti, and coffee. I think we were all full at that point!

It was so fun being able to share the beautiful place I work with some bloggers I knew and others I was so happy to meet. We have so many things going on at the hotel, from holiday specials to holiday party promotions to packages and the ability to earn rewards points. It’s a topic I love talking about, so if you would like more information, feel free to ask!

Monday seems like a good day for a roundup of happy things, don’t you think? Our weekend was a mix of home time and being out and about at the Head of the Charles, on the boat, and with a visit to Duxbury Beach. I don’t care how cold it gets out, I am happiest near the sea!

French toast sticks Lots has been happening lately, especially at work! The hotel I work for, the Royal Sonesta Boston, just completed a major renovation, and that includes the opening of a new coffee shop that’s open for breakfast, lunch, and afternoon treats. House made items like French toast sticks and pastries are tough to have in the building, but I am loving having easy access to a really good double espresso in the afternoon without having to take a ton of time away from my desk.  This will definitely come in handy in the winter.

Canvas Pop

Lately we have been ever-so-slowly settling into our house. We are far behind where we would like to be due to a really ugly situation with a crooked plumber that has been going on since February. Despite this frustration, little things like the above Canvas Pop canvas, made from our own travel photos, are making our house a place we love.

g20 spa

Speaking of this plumber situation, any way we can relieve stress has been a draw, and the week after we went to court and thought we were done with him, we spent a date night at G20 Spa in Boston to unwind. Massages, followed by sparkling wine in their penthouse lounge made for a perfect Friday night.

Working near Kendall Square has been making me really happy lately too. I was so incredibly excited when Mother Juice opened up, offering great smoothies and juices and really yummy, healthy salads. I don’t leave work often for lunch since we have a free cafeteria, but when I do get out, I make a beeline to Mother Juice.

Mother Juice

One thing not making me happy? My lack of motivation for exercise. I have downloaded the Pop Sugar fitness app to try to make myself do some short workouts, and while I love it, I haven’t really been actually using it.

What are your recent favorites? Any tips on getting motivated?
