A winter getaway to a warm destination is most definitely a little slice of paradise. Our trip to Miami included lots of sunshine by the pool, dinner on the beach, and tons of really good food right from the start. Right after we checked in to the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel, we headed for the pool deck for lunch. The warm weather made me opt for a lighter option, a grilled Caesar salad and a glass of delightfully oaky Chardonnay.

Grilled caesarGoing for the more local flavor, my husband had a Cuban sandwich with to-die-for garlicky fries. The fries took away the light aspect of my lunch. What can I say? There’s nothing I love more than good fries.

During our stay at the Sonesta, we visited their restaurant, Panorama, and their pool area bar a number of times for drinks and snacks. Sitting by the pool with Prosecco and soaking up the Florida sunshine was perfect, as was Sunday brunch at the pool. Panorama’s signature French Toast was covered in fresh fruit, a decadent treat to start the day (with mimosas, naturally).

Right next to the hotel was Peacock Garden Cafe, a fabulous cocktail bar and restaurant that featured live jazz in the garden. I didn’t snap any photos, but it made me feel like Hemingway was going to walk into the room at any time. I stuck to the Southern vibe and sipped mint juleps while listening to the jazz and enjoying warm Saturday night breezes. . . aaaaah.

Sonesta French ToastOne of our favorite meals of our Coconut Grove stay was at Jaguar.  As we tend to do, we sat at the bar and absolutely loved our server, who explained everything to us, including their extensive, amazing ceviche menu.

First up, I had a black pepper passion fruit capirinhia.

capirinhiaUnlike Massachusetts, Florida has happy hour, and we enjoyed discount drinks that came with ceviche spoons. In addition, we ordered the entire ceviche spoon menu and a ceviche special. Chunks of tender fish, lots of citrus, avocado, and spice filled the plate, and we had fun sharing all the flavors before moving on to a bigger plate.

Jaguar cevicheBelow is the Tiradito Nikkei, a plate made up of the following: tuna, ginger, soy, shallots, jalapeños, cilantro, lime, cucumber, avocado & sesame seeds. It woke up every sense and was fresh and light, the perfect way to eat. I could eat Jaguar’s ceviche every day. I truly miss it.

Chart House Miami viewsOur final meal in Coconut Grove was a spectacular one as we had lunch al fresco at The Chart House. Being obsessed with all things boating, we loved being able to see every kind of boat, from ones that cost millions to kayaks, going by as we ate lunch.

We were all about the seafood again. This crab stack, with mango and avocado, was as delicious as it was beautiful. It fit right in with the bright sunshiny day and felt like a healthy-ish lunch option.

Crab, Mango, and Avocado StackOur jumbo shrimp came with a flair, presented in dry ice. It was your standard shrimp cocktail, but it was pretty great.

Chart House shrimp cocktailFinally, we shared the “East Meets West” tuna dish, zesty tuna tartare drizzled with wasabi cream paired with seared peppered tuna & avocado, with kim chee slaw & plantain chips. Again, the flavors in this dish were off-the-hook. I think I could eat tuna tartare with avocado and wasabi cream all the days of my life. With lunch I enjoyed a tart and mineral-y Bogle Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, perfectly bright and seafood-friendly. The one downside of the meal was that our server tried to upsell us on everything, right to the very end, when he tried to pitch a credit card of some sort to us. Otherwise, he was very nice and probably just doing his job with the sales pitches. Still, we just wanted to relax.

East Meets West TunaWe didn’t even scratch the surface of the dining scene in Coconut Grove, much less the rest of Miami. This is a place for bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and of course a little spice. I didn’t know what to expect when we planned the trip and I was very pleasantly surprised.

Chili is the perfect weekend food. I have spent the past two Sundays leisurely working on big batches of chili and toppings, enjoying my new kitchen, having little dance parties, and making the most of the cold weather.

I love chili because you can add anything and everything and come up with a different recipe each time. I’m sure I have shared that sentiment a million times before, but in a busy world, it is definitely a welcome little trick.

This chili isn’t too complicated, and like most of its kind is fine with substitutions.

Ingredients

2 cans fire roasted tomatoes (depends on how liquid-y you want your chili)

1 can black beans

1 can Cuban style or BBQ beans

1 pound grass fed ground beef

2 cups sweet corn

3 tablespoons chipotle in adobo, finely pureed

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 large white onion, diced

splash of chocolate stout

spices to taste: garlic powder, crushed red pepper, chili powder, hot paprika

diced onionI started the chili by cooking down the chopped onion in some olive oil, then adding in the ground beef until browned. As it browned, I added the cocoa powder and shakes of garlic powder, crushed red pepper, and hot paprika. Once the beef was browned, I added the tomatoes, beans, and corn, then stirred in the chipotle. Finally, I added the beer and brought it all up to a simmer, going about my day as the wonderful smells filled the air. I let the chili cook for a couple of hours, then shut the heat off. When we were ready to eat I brought it up to a boil again and made sure it was cooked and hot through.

taza chocolate stoutWe topped the chili with sliced avocado, pickled jalapeno, shredded cheese, sour cream, and cilantro, with a side of chocolate stout. It was the perfect Sunday supper and made for days of lunch leftovers for my husband. There’s a good chance I will be kicking off another week with this chili. It’s just that good!

It feels like it was years ago that we took our little Miami getaway. Many inches of snow later, lots of cold dark nights, and another nasty fall on black ice later, and I am spending Travel Tuesday dreaming of a romantic seaside dinner we had in Miami at Red Fish Grill. If you are planning on a Miami trip, definitely do yourself a favor and book dinner around sunset.

MiamiWe spent the day wandering around the beach and Coconut Grove, followed by some pool time at the Sonesta. When dinner time came around, we made the short drive to Coral Gables to the Red Fish Grill. The restaurant is in the opposite direction from the crowded, modern, sexy downtown Miami and is more remote, set in the Matheson Hammock Park.

Red Fish GrillThere’s plenty of beach and park to stroll before or after dinner, and the views of the Miami skyline are priceless, as are the colors at sunset.

Red Fish GrillIt was getting a little chilly when we sat down for dinner, and since we were tired from so much sun (and not being used to sun!) we opted to sit inside for dinner, though there were plenty of people dining outside. There was also a wedding rehearsal on the beach. I love love, and this area would be the perfect setting for a wedding.

Red Fish GrillOnce we were settled, we decided on a bottle of Iron Horse Vineyards sparkling wine, a favorite winery since we visited their fabulous tasting room a couple of years ago. Red Fish Grill only serves beer and wine, so cocktail lovers might want to stop somewhere for a cocktail before or after.

Our server was incredibly friendly and paced our meal perfectly. We decided to share a bunch of items, as we often do. I didn’t get to photograph everything because as the sun set, the light got very dim. It was bad for photography but excellent for cozying up and enjoying the view.

corn and crab chowderOur array of dishes included Corn and Crab Chowder and a perfectly fresh Tuna Tartare with black garlic puree. I am loving black garlic everything these days, and the flavors, along with the fish, just made for an amazing little dish.

We also shared a Black Mission Fig Salad with Goat Cheese and Crab Cakes.

The food was so good! Every bite was amazing, and it was evident that everything was super fresh and made with love. Everyone at the restaurant seemed very happy and invested in what they were doing, and that dedication made for a very special meal for us.

The next time we are in Miami, we will definitely be making a beeline to the Red Fish Grill. I would even plan on arriving an hour earlier next time to be able to have plenty of time to wander the beach and watch the boats going by. Better yet, Red Fish Grill is accessible by boat so if I can find a boat in Miami. . . 😉
