Some people are talking about how summer is almost over. While they are actually wrong, and the season changes the third week in September (and boat season goes a month AFTER that) it seems like many people are in a hurry to get on with autumn. I have seen Halloween candy in stores, and at work we are planning Christmas events.

I, on the other hand, am enjoying each simple bite of this season, including seafood enjoyed by the sea. When my family visited a few weeks ago, we all went out to Quincy to Tony’s Clam Shop, where we feasted on all sorts of seafood dishes.

I have had constant cravings for steamers, so I polished these off without assistance. I love the sweet and briny flavors and the hot buttery finish of steamers.

I also love all things fried, so I shared a fried seafood platter with my husband. Piled high with shrimp, cod, calamari, and clams, this plate was one we couldn’t finish!

Tony’s has an enormous menu that also features grilled items like burgers and hot dogs and Middle Eastern specialties. You can also get beer and wine if you want to make things a little more festive.

Tony’s has a great, large patio that is often full but empties out at a steady pace, leaving tables open periodically.

And the views, well the views from Tony’s Clam Shop patio just can’t be beat. Watch the sun go down over Boston, smell the sea air, and listen to the waves gently crashing. It’s a mini vacation just a short drive or T trip away!

While I am on the subject of seafood, I have to mention the Harp & Bard seafood specials. They often have twin lobsters, steamers, and a filling, heavenly lobster pie. (They also have great drinks, and it’s an overall really fun place.)

As always, recent weeks have been filled with tasty bits and bites, nights out in Boston, and more special, nights out in our back yard. We’re pretty sure if we get a fire pit we can continue those well into October or even November, depending on how Mother Nature decides to treat us this year.

As has been the case for a while, Boston has more new restaurants than I can even keep track of, and when we check one off the list, it’s always exciting. A rainy night out at Merrill & Co., where we pretty much ordered everything, was an incredible introduction to this fun space. Staff was warm and friendly, cocktails were amazing, and dishes like fluke ceviche and the  best mussels I have ever had have had me craving a repeat visit soon.

Our day trip to beautiful Westport included beach walks, kayaking, and beer tasting in addition to the concert at Westport Rivers. We’re always game for a flight of beers at Buzzards Bay Brewing, especially at one of their picnic tables in the blazing sun.

Our Westport trip also included a leisurely lunch at The Bayside Restaurant, a small seaside spot literally across the street from the beach and a beautiful coastal walking trail.

I could very easily see us taking a week vacation and spending it in Westport, enjoying the beaches, farms, wine, and day trips to places like Newport. The Bayside was perfect for seafood and local beers before we hit the beach. I love how quite the area is; I think it is a hidden gem! Ahhh coastal living. . .

Time in our back yard with family is what I will remember overall from this summer, and the addition of Nutella to regular S’mores was simple but one of the best decisions made. I love how gooey the Nutella and marshmallow get together once heated up!

Steel and Rye continues to be an obsession and a place we sometimes end when out for a walk. A Sunday night at the bar with a cocktail and little appetizer like this beautiful grilled bread topped with favas and tomatoes is the perfect pre-or-post-dinner snack.

I’m not usually a Chobani yogurt fan (Fage is my favorite!), but when I saw this banana maple, it reminded me of Banoffee Pie and I had to get it. This is a truly yummy yogurt, and the addition of oats definitely helped keep me full.

Our garden and CSA have been producing lots of zucchini and carrots, and pancakes are one of my favorite ways to use up a big batch of veggies. You can find my zucchini pancakes recipe here. Topped with sriracha yogurt, these are a perfect summer dinner. Corn pancakes (with bacon!) are also a favorite.

I think that sums up some of my favorite recent bites. Up this week? Some lookbacks at our Sonoma favorites as we prep for another trip, as well as a summer wine and a quick review of a local clam shack!

(Happy 8th anniversary to my amazing husband! I would do our wedding all over again, except I would have skipped the shoes and had our boat waiting for us at Spectacle Island so we could keep the party going there!)

Between the daily tomato harvest from my own garden and the heirloom and field tomatoes coming from our Red Fire Farm CSA, our kitchen table is literally covered in dozens of tomatoes, just waiting to be eaten. It’s a beautiful expression of August, and it has made our nights full of delicious recipes. While we have gotten overwhelmed with some produce, like cabbage, I never tire of local tomatoes, and as I notice fewer flowers on my own plants, I am definitely sad.

We have been making the most of the season, as always, with a few very simple dinners.

Rustic tomato pie – Trader Joe’s frozen pie crust, tomatoes that have been sliced, salted, and drained, garden basil, and a mix of shredded cheese and mayonnaise make for a decadent and rich pie. I bake the crust according to package instructions, then add the tomatoes and basil and top with the cheese and mayo, putting it back in the oven for about 20 minutes, until lightly browned on the top. Tomato pie is SO easy, and it is just heavenly.

Cod with tomatoes – This is an old standby, made even better with our CSA onions and chili peppers I grew myself.

I satisfied a major pasta craving with Trader Joe’s lemon pepper pappardelle, topped with slowly cooked tomatoes, eggplant, onions, garlic, and balsamic. Our CSA eggplant has been incredible. I don’t know how we are going to get through the winter without all of these local veggies!

Aside from tomatoes, we have had an abundance of zucchini both in our garden and with the CSA. I love zucchini stuffed with spicy sausage and marinara sauce, baked with cheese on top. Apologies for the blurry photo; our kitchen has been a busy place with cleaning, prepping, and cooking all of this produce!
