It seems that St. Patrick’s Day week is the perfect time to look back on our most recent trip to Ireland and to share some of the incredible food we ate while in Galway. Our eating (and drinking!) included a mix of old favorites and places that we hadn’t tried before. I am currently craving all of the below!

Galway Christmas Market

We visited Galway during the annual Christmas market, one of my favorite times of year to go. The market features shopping, entertainment, rides, and of course food and drink. Mulled wine and hot dogs made on a massive round grill, topped with onions and mustard, are two market favorites we indulged in more than once!

We got away for a date night in Galway, and we decided on Ard Bia, an old favorite, cozy and romantic, with the wild River Corrib emptying into the sea alongside it.

The menu is focused on Irish ingredients, and we indulged in dishes like potato and tarragon gnocchi, Burren smoked haddock bake, local salad with Galway goat cheese, and a beautiful trio of dips, including a vibrant beetroot one.

Ard Bia is simply beautiful, bathed in candlelight, and adorned with dried flowers and greens. The walls are lined with Irish treats for purchase, including the Achill sea salt I bought to brine our Thanksgiving turkey!

One of the spots that was new-to-us, but a Galway favorite, was Papa Rich, which has several Galway locations. We ate at the Newtownsmith location which had beautiful river and cathedral views and incredible street food style meals.

Spicy Sambal Goreng and a crisp beer made especially for Papa Rich made for the perfect lunch. I wish we had Papa Rich in Boston!

Xi'an Street Food

Also new-to-us was Xi’an Street Food, where we shared some incredible dishes including Amber Fire Szchuan Style (With chips! I love that this is an option in Ireland!) and a hand-ripped noodle dish, which they are known for.

We celebrated my in-law’s anniversary at a beautiful special occasion spot the Park House Hotel. A long and lovely lunch included the smoked salmon platter, complete with veggies, salads, mashed potatoes and bread, and a to-die-for Toblerone cheesecake for dessert.

Last but certainly not least, we made it a point to visit one of my favorite cocktail spots, Tribeton, for a couple of their beautiful gin drinks in their stunning setting. Tribeton is also a great date spot, though we went early enough that it was baby-friendly as well!

We’re looking at our travel calendars to see when our next trip to Ireland makes the most sense. . . baby flies free until he is two, and we plan to make the most of it!

Social media can have some serious influence when it comes to purchases and actions. Case in point, last Tuesday was #NationalMartiniDay, and when I saw a Facebook post from Venezia Restaurant tempting followers with martinis on their deck, I knew exactly what our after work plans entailed.

Venezia has a pretty incredible patio that’s right on the water. We have boated there before and sat inside, so this was my first time enjoying the sun-soaked spot, which also featured large umbrellas to keep us shaded if we wanted. For the martini holiday, I went with a classic gin martini with a twist. Service was so warm and welcoming, and my drink was a cold, crisp summer treat.

As martinis tend to do, it spurred on an appetite, and though we had dinner plans at home, we shared two small plates, Coccio Tradizionale (Fried rice arancini with peas and Bolognese, potato croquette with prosciutto and scamorza, cheese polenta) and Shrimp Scampi (U8 jumbo shrimp, white wine, lemon, garlic and fresh parsley).

How beautiful are these dishes?! They were as delicious as they were pleasing to the eye, with the golden fried bites perfect for dunking in a homemade tomato sauce and substantial shrimp offering up a heavenly, garlicky sauce that we soaked up with bread.

Venezia is just down the road from us, but we often overlook it since it’s a bit tucked away. They have a full bar with great cocktails and an extensive food menu that makes ordering a bit difficult, since you’ll want everything!I will definitely be keeping this Dorchester gem in mind for patio nights going forward this summer, especially now that we finally have a boat in the water!

We’ve made it a full two weeks at home with a newborn! It’s been quite the adjustment, but for the most part, it’s also just been really fun. Myles is a very sweet baby who likes to eat as much as we do, and it turns out that this is the best time to get out and about with a child.

Brunch and breweries and even a dinner date have occurred, and he has slept through it all.

Our first brunch out was with friends to Ashmont Grill, where I made my triumphant return to brunching with a bucket of bubbles and delightfully runny eggs in a spicy, perfect shakshouka with homemade, warm and puffy bread.

Myles snoozed in the booth alongside us, wrapped in his BAA-themed blue and yellow blanket since it was Boston Marathon weekend.

I can’t even deal with how cute he is. . .

I promised not to be that mom who posts a million pictures a day, but he is pretty spectacular.

Continuing with the “we barely ever leave Dorchester” theme, we had a dinner date for three at Tavolo, one of our favorites. I love the space at Tavolo, and Brian at the bar is the best.

On our second Sunday at home, we brunched again, this time thanks to a gift card to Steel & Rye, another absolute favorite. It was chock full of #babieswhobrunch; I think we are catching onto something here. Brunch is at a good time of day for babies and tired parents who have been up forever. It’s usually got the perfect level of noise in case of any fussing, and there are drinks!

We kicked brunch off with some delicious apple bread with honey butter, the bread having almost a custard-like consistency, something I could have easily eaten all day long.

Since I had been missing smoked salmon, I went with the perfectly crispy potato pancake topped with salmon, avocado, creme fraiche, and greens. Holy amazing.

We know that the baby won’t be this portable forever, so we are enjoying dates out and about now and have so many places and people to show him. It’s fun that his birth coincided with the arrival of real spring weather. . . it is a beautiful season of year and of life indeed!
