A few weeks ago on a terribly freezing, snowy day, I warmed up in Hotel Chocolat’s newest space, their Cocoa Bar – Café.

Hotel Chocolat

As we shut out the bitter city, we were offered glasses of Prosecco and started to take in the delicious, chocolate-y sights and smells of Hotel Chocolat. The space is larger than when it was just a retail spot, and when that glorious warm weather finally arrives, they will have seating on Newbury Street.

Hotel Chocolat party

Hotel Chocolat and the Cocoa Bar aim to connect the experience of consuming chocolate with the sourcing of the chocolate. Some of their chocolate is even sourced from their property in St. Lucia, where they also have a hotel. I would certainly love to visit St. Lucia right now!

Throughout the event we snacked on chocolate treats, including these cheesecake truffles.

I also discovered heaven-in-a-bar, a banoffee pie chocolate. Banoffee pie is one of my favorite desserts, and in a chocolate bar form, it is fun and decadent.

Hotel Chocolat’s Cocoa Bar is a elegant space full of beautiful chocolates and chocolate themed products, including savory products, like a cocoa pesto we received in our gift bags.  The prices are reasonable, making a little chocolate treat possible every now and then.

Below is a full description of the Cocoa Bar’s menu segments. A trip to Hotel Chocolat is ideal for these cold days. Just imagine relaxing with a warm chocolate plate

  • Light + Detoxing (Cacao and Tea) – Raw cacao beans have more antioxidants by weight than almost any other food. Even after roasting they have 150% more antioxidants than pure pomegranate juice. Light and detoxing drinks are designed to leave guests feeling really refreshed. The Cocoa Royale (crushed nibs and shells, steeped in a cafetiere) is midway between tea and coffee in intensity. Tea selections are: Cacao Shell, English breakfast + Cacao Shell, Peppermint + Cacao Shell, Green, Oolong, Silver Tip and Earl Grey. Aromatic hot chocolate drinks are Rosemary + Mint and Jasmine + White Chocolate. ($2.50 – $4.50)
  • Good for the Soul (Drinking Chocolate) – Cacao contains Theobromine, a natural stimulant that makes us feel energized, focused and calm. It’s gentle, long lasting and non-addictive. These are offered in variations of: classic, chili, milky, mint, salted caramel, St. Lucia 70% (complex), Vietnam 80% (fruity), Ecuador 90% (mellow). They also offer Chocolate + Fresh Banana, Praline Luxe (classic chocolate and double praline) and The Bombe (classic chocolate, vanilla ice cream, cacao whipped cream). Short chocolate drinks are the Boss-La (short and strong, 70% cacao) and 100% Cacao (a pure cacao hit, served short). Finishing touches such as Cacao Whipped Cream, Praline Dippers, and Salted Caramel Dippers can also be added to any drink for extra luxury. ($3.50 – $5.00)
  • Energizing + Stimulating – These unique Whole Bean Cacao Drinks are made from 100% roasted cacao beans. Just pure cacao, with no sugar, no gluten – and that keeps the benefits locked into their drinks: all the rich antioxidents and minerals, natural feel-good compounds and lots of healthy energy. Whole Bean drinks use roasted cacao or coffee. Barista coffee uses George Howell locally-roasted beans in Espresso, Macchiato, Cortado, Latte, Cappuccino, Americano, Mocha (70% chocolate and espresso) and Macho Mocha (shorter and stronger than a mocha). Barista cacao is all of the classics made with cacao beans not coffee beans and is full of healthy stimulants in Macchiato-style, Americano-style or Cappuccino-style. Organic milk is always used and soy is available upon request. ($2.50 – $4.00)
  • Savory Open Sandwiches – Served on a toasted English muffin with nib butter as well as a green salad dressed in cocoa balsamic. Selections are: Local cheddar with Organic Tomatoes, Smoked Salmon with House Horseradish, Vermont Goat’s cheese with Walnuts and House Chutney, Prosciutto Crudo Ham, Crumbled Berkshire Blue Cheese and Walnuts, Organic Cherry Tomatoes and House Chutney ($8.50)
  • Warm Chocolate Plates – Served on a toasted English muffin with whipped cacao cream on the side. Selections are: Chocolate Hazelnut Spread with Roasted Hazelnuts, melted Mississippi Mud Pie slab, sliced Banana with Chocolate Peanut Spread, Vanilla Ice Cream with 70% Chocolate, Farmer’s Market Raspberry Jam with Chocolate Hazelnut Spread. ($7.50)

I’m sorry for the delay in choosing a winner for this delicious giveaway! The events in Boston recently definitely made me step away from blogging for awhile. I’m back now, and after meeting so many amazing therapy dogs on Boylston Street and feeling their healing powers firsthand, I am excited to announce that Noel is the winner of this giveaway. Please email me traveleatlove (@) gmail.com. Thank you, Gearharts Chocolates and Companions for Heroes!

How cute is this chocolate puppy? Well, I will have you know that, in addition to being adorable, he’s really delicious too. You can’t go wrong with handmade chocolate stuffed with homemade peanut utter, especially when it’s for a good cause.

Geartharts Chocolates started in Charlottesville, Virginia, a place I am dying to visit, and is headed up by Tim Gearhart, who learned his craft at the CIA. Tim’s career includes being stationed in Kuwait during the Gulf War where he served as a line cook. Now that he has his own delicious company, Tim is giving back with these Peanut Butter Pups, which benefit the organization Companions for Heroes.

peanut butter pups

Being a huge lover of animals, I was smitten with this idea the second I received the email. I have heard of Companions for Heroes before, and I love the idea of shelter pets healing wounded veterans and vice versa. There’s so much ugly happening in the world, but there’s so much possibility for kindness too. Animals, especially shelter pets, have a huge capacity for love, and it’s amazing to see them giving that to American heroes to help them heal.

I loved being able to sample Gearharts chocolates, and what’s even better, they are offering a box of Peanut Butter Pups to one lucky Travel, Wine, and Dine reader.

Just check out Gearharts website, and let me know, in addition to the pups, which of their fine chocolates you’d like to try.

I will choose a winner next Tuesday evening. If you are so inclined, please spread the word about the great partnership between this chocolatier and Companions for Heroes; it’s the perfect match!

GEARHARTS FINE CHOCOLATES INTRODUCES NEW LINE OF
PEANUT BUTTER PUPS

-“Pups” to Benefit Companions for Heroes-

Charlottesville, VA – April 1, 2013– Gearharts Fine Chocolates (www.gearhartschocolates.com) announces a new line of chocolates, Peanut Butter Pups, that will benefit Companions for Heroes (www.companionsforheroes.org), a non-profit organization that provides companion animals for war veterans. The “Pups,” inspired by children but enjoyed by all ages, resemble a miniature dachshund, with their elongated noses and dark brown eyes. The Peanut Butter Pups are now available in nine-piece boxes at Gearhart’s Richmond and Charlottesville, Va., store locations and online at a MSRP of $22.00.

clip_image002[4]The Pups are made from premium milk chocolate, cream and Virginia-based Reginald’s Homemade peanut butter, then finished with a dark chocolate face and toasted almond ears. In true Gearharts fashion, each piece is finished by hand and includes no additives or preservatives.

Five percent of sales of the Peanut Butter Pups will be donated to Companions for Heroes (C4H), formerly named Pets2Vets. C4H was founded in 2009 by David Sharp, an Air Force veteran who was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2003 after serving a tour in Iraq. Sharp saw his life change after rescuing a pit bull puppy from a local Virginia shelter. C4H pairs rescue animals with war veterans to aid our country’s heroes in their recovery, while at the same time provide shelter and rescue animals with good homes.

Chocolatier and Owner Tim Gearhart of Gearharts Fine Chocolates, began his culinary career in the Gulf War. After graduating from high school, Tim joined the Marines and served as a line cook in Kuwait. He attributes much of the patience and repetitive nature that now benefits him as a chocolatier to his time there, having to cook for up to 20,000 Marines a day.

“We’re excited to partner with Companions for Heroes,” said Tim. “I know firsthand what the men and women protecting our country go through when they serve tours, and it feels good to be able to do something for them when they come home.”

It’s been quite awhile since I wrote a “favorites” post, and while Shanti continues to be my favorite takeout (I have to admit, weekly – I can not get enough of their Vindaloo and Korma.), I do have some new favorite things I have stumbled across just in the past few weeks.

King's Ginger

The King’s Ginger – Just days after our dinner at Enzo, we went to The Urban Grape for a whiskey tasting. I was still thinking about the Prosecco and ginger cocktail I had at Enzo, and when Urban Grape owner TJ recommended The King’s Ginger, I had to try it.

The King’s Ginger was specifically formulated by Berry Bros. in 1903 for King Edward VII. Rich and zesty, the liqueur was created to stimulate and revivify His Majesty during morning rides in his new horseless carriage – a Daimler. It has been appreciated by bon viveurs, sporting gentlemen and high-spirited ladies ever since.

While I don’t enjoy The King’s Ginger in the morning, a splash makes a perfect addition to a glass of bubbly. I am ginger-obsessed!

Teff

Bob’s Red Mill Teff – We have been doing most of our grocery shopping these days at Market Basket, and I am always impressed with their selection of Bob’s Red Mill whole grains, and for cheaper than other stores. When shopping for our healthy New Year, I decided to pick up a bag of teff to eat for breakfast.

I’ve been mixing teff with water and apple sauce and cinnamon, letting it soak overnight, and then heating it in the microwave in the morning. It’s the smallest grain in the world, so it lacks the weird texture thing oatmeal has for me. It has 7 grams of protein and 20% of my daily iron in 1/4 cup, and I usually eat about 1/2 cup. I am loving teff!

Whole Grain Teff (Tef, T’ef) an ancient North African cereal grass, is a nutritional powerhouse. It is the smallest grain in the world (about 100 grains are the size of a kernel of wheat!). The germ and bran, where the nutrients are concentrated, account for a larger volume of the seed compared to more familiar grains. Cooked whole grain teff makes a unique hot breakfast cereal similar in consistency and texture to wheat farina.

strawberry liquorice

Darrell Lea Strawberry Liquorice – I had a meeting at the Pru last week (I’m doing their events PR through 2012, yay!), and after I needed to pick up some heavy cream at Trader Joe’s for my homemade tomato soup. It was chilly, I was tired and hungry, and somehow I left with all sorts of candy, including mini dark chocolate bars and these little strawberry Twizzler-esque bites. They pack a ton of strawberry flavor without being too sweet, and they are nice and soft, almost fluffy. I won’t be buying them again because I can eat a giant handful in one sitting and then my sugar crashes big time, but I love them!

Quinn popcorn

Quinn Popcorn Vermont Maple & Sea Salt – I read about Quinn popcorn in Daily Candy and didn’t really think about it again until I was in Joppa Fine Foods in Newburyport and saw the popcorn on the shelves. I picked up the Vermont Maple & Sea Salt, and I love it. The maple and sea salt come in a separate packet, as does canola oil. Once the popcorn is popped, the oil goes into the bag, followed by the maple and salt, it gets a big shake, and it’s sweet, salty, and crunchy goodness.

Quinn Popcorn is microwave popcorn reinvented!

Our popcorn kernels are organic and non-gmo. On top of that, we are ditching the plastic and Teflon patched bags, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavorings, and replacing them with recycled and compostable paper, expeller pressed oils, and simple, mouth-watering ingredients.

Quinn Popcorn is natural and cultivated, our ingredients clean and pure, and the flavors distinctively sweet, savory, and salty.

Tea – I have pretty much realized I am a tea hoarder. My mom got me this beautiful Wissotzsky tea for Christmas, and I love that it is a mix of caffeinated favorites, some new teas, like a cherry black tea, and decaf options that are perfect on ice, like wildberry nectar. Decaf teas help me to stay more hydrated while providing an exciting change from regular water.

Do you have any new or old favorite things I should try?
