Bliss

What a weekend! I kind of still can’t believe how beautiful it was. We had  a fabulous weekend, and I hope you did too. I started mine with a terrible, horrible, no-good 22 mile run. It was raining, which normally doesn’t bother me, but I was just achy all over. My knees and hips hurt the worst, and I was a little bummed, feeling like my body wasn’t ready. That is, until I ran up the three flights of stairs to our condo and saw my training shoes outside the door where I left them after my last run. I looked down at my feet and realized I was wearing really old running shoes, which completely explains all the pain. It didn’t make it any better for that run, but it made me feel a lot better about my fitness level. Crazy how much running shoes affect every single part of your body. My spine hurt that night!

Saturday we were up and at ‘em to watch Ireland lose to England in rugby, had a family barbeque, went grocery shopping and had an early night re-watching Shutter Island. And Sunday we spent the day with my father-in-law. He’s visiting from Ireland, and we celebrated his birthday at Alma Nove yesterday afternoon. It was delightful.

It’s my birthday week, so I am feelin’ pretty good today. The big day is tomorrow, and even though I am going to be 32, I still really love birthdays. Getting older is a gift that not everyone gets, and I have had it pretty good in life. I will be celebrating all week!

It’s no secret that I love Northern California, and I hope you all aren’t tired of posts about Sonoma and Napa. I have a recipe coming tomorrow, I promise.

But, for now, I am going to take you to Sonoma on our journey from San Francisco International Airport. We rented our car, quickly made our way through Golden Gate Park, and were on the majestic Golden Gate Bridge before we knew it.

Golden Gate Bridge

Sonoma isn’t far at all from San Francisco, and we have come to know the drive very well over the years. We toyed with the idea of stopping for lunch right outside of San Francisco, but we wanted to be in Sonoma as quickly as possible so we kept going. One amazing sign of spring in wine country, fields of mustard, paint the whole valley yellow.

Our first stop was one of our wine country favorites, Gloria Ferrer, It’s one of the first wineries you encounter on your way, and the sparkling wine and views are pure bliss. Below was the view from our place on the patio.

Sonoma

Gloria Ferrer produces a range of sparkling and still wines, and I love them all, but I love bubbly the most. I went with a glass of their Anniversary Cuvee which offers that lovely, toasty brioche nose I love, with flavors of lemon and lots of bubbles.

We made some new friends from the Bay Area while we sipped, and the heat and lack of food caught up with me pretty quickly. Our tablemates suggested that we head across the street to Cornerstone Sonoma to grab a bite since it was the closest place to buy food. I was grateful for their advice; when I get hungry it gets ugly pretty quickly!

Gloria Ferrer

Cornerstone is a complex that combines wine, food, and art with relaxing indoor and outdoor seating areas. Meadowcroft tasting room greets you to one side as you arrive. We skipped tasting because food was my #1 priority.

Meadowcroft Wines

Cornerstone was pretty empty, and we got to order and sit down in the shade with water pretty quickly.

Cornerstone Sonoma

Since we had dinner plans in Napa a couple of hours later, we split a pulled pork sandwich with pickles and cole slaw and a side of potato salad. Paired with a Blue Bottle iced coffee and lots of water, it woke me right up and made my hunger pains go away.

Lunch gave us renewed energy to explore Cornerstone’s sculpture gardens. They’re free to the public, and you can spend hours there checking out the various pieces of outdoor art work, in addition to indoor galleries.

Wine country was everywhere, from the surrounding mountains to the fences covered in grape vines.

The art was really fun, but I was kind of in vacation mode and didn’t take any notes on the artists.

One of the parts I loved the most was the actual garden, food as art

Cornerstone Sonoma

This area represents Tomato Mania. I love the idea of crops as art; they’re always changing, you have little control over them, and they can yield something beautiful and nourishing.

The sculpture garden also featured a children’s area with brightly colored bird houses, their very own grape vines, and play houses. It was really hands on and a fun way to be able to expose kids to art.

I loved these “rain clouds”; aren’t they pretty?

We really enjoyed our walk around Cornerstone Sonoma. After a long flight and lunch it was nice to stretch our legs out, take a little break from wine tasting, and to take in something new and fun. It made for a blissful afternoon!

How are you enjoying this blissful weather we are having?

I am back from California, wishing I was still there but full of great memories and waiting on a shipment of fantastic wine to help us extend our vacation. I have more photos on my laptop and posts brewing in my head about Sonoma and Napa than I can even put into words right now, so hopefully you won’t mind seeing lots of vineyard shots over the coming weeks. It was heaven.

Signorello Vineyards

We really squeezed out every last second of our trip; when our friend Chef Robin White, a friend of Under the Tuscan Sun’s Frances Mayes, invited us to participate live in a tweet-up celebrating Mayes’ new book The Tuscan Sun Cookbook, we had to zip over to Napa Valley one last time to participate, even if it meant a little bit of anxiety on my part about getting to the airport on time. Turns out our flight was delayed five hours anyway, so I am glad we didn’t spend any more time in the airport than we had to.

Robin is the queen of virtual dinners, hosting all sorts of fun events that bring people together from all over to feast on food and wine and share the experience via Twitter. She wowed us with a Venge Wine Dinner at her home, and we have had fun participating in her Soup Week events.

The live portion of this tweet-up was hosted by Signorello Vineyards on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley. Despite the soaking rain, the drive was beautiful, lush, green, and scenic.

The tweet-up was attended virtually by people from all over the world using the hashtag #TuscanSunChat. I was lucky enough to be with Robin, one of the hosts, and a bunch of wine country locals.

Signorello’s chef kept a constant stream of hot pizzas coming to the table that they had set up for us. He was cooking up the pizzas from The Tuscan Sun Cookbook  outside in the rain, and they were delicious. This one had chili oil and agave nectar on it, giving it a kick of spice and a hint of sweet. With the chewy crust and flavorful toppings, it was pretty spectacular.

We also had this margarita pizza. Everything on it was so fresh. The pizza made excellent fuel for all of our tweets!

And of course there was wine. Signorello poured their Seta, a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, which was crisp, acidic, and full of lemony flavor, a bright contrast to the grey day outside.

We followed that with Signorello’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

My husband has attended a few tweet-ups with me, mostly in California, and I think he finds them a little funny. Most of the guests were communicating via Twitter more than we were talking. I , like many people, am a huge fan of Under the Tuscan Sun, so I found it a lot of fun to be tweeting with Frances Mayes and her husband. I am looking forward to picking up a copy of the book to bring a little bit of Tuscany to Boston!

I’ll just apologize now for my growing obsession with Pinterest. Unless, of course, you share the obsession, then you know what I mean, and I want to follow you.

I am generally a list person; I have lists for everything, recipes, groceries, workouts, work tasks, home tasks, etc. For these, Notepad is my simple best friend. But for visual organization, Pinterest is my new best friend. It’s a great place to organize not just my own favorite recipes, photos, and trips, but also to pull from other people’s creativity and experiences.

I am a terrible clothes shopper. I have no sense of what should go together, so I buy random pieces, and I feel like I never have anything to wear. Not that I am going on a shopping spree anytime soon, but my Pinterest Style board actually helps me pull together things I love so that when I do go shopping, I at least have some sort of idea.

Likewise, I don’t have a house being built right now, but Pinterest allows me to dream a little dream when it comes to designing that someday house.  For every bad neighbor we have, add a couple of acres on to my future land. Update: our little neighbor boys smoke 24 hours a day; and even though they’re doing so inside their apartment, our kitchen now reeks like an ashtray. So glad we worked hard to buy this place!

Indulge me for a few minutes as I get away from our frustrating reality. . .

My dream house:

  • A farmhouse, preferably somewhere beautiful and not very cold
  • At least one fireplace
  • Lots of land with part of it entirely fenced in for my someday adopted dogs
  • A gigantic soaking tub
  • A steam shower
  • Hardwood floors that are heated
  • Solar panels or a windmill
  • A huge kitchen with 8 burners, a big island and built in wine fridge
  • A wine room
  • Dining space in the kitchen for a small group and a huge, rustic wood table in the dining room for parties
  • A giant garden and fruit trees

This will be my view.

Napa
And this table will do.

Our house will have to have enough land around it so that my giant soaking tub can have windows overlooking the beautiful landscape. It definitely won’t have as much white in the kitchen or bedroom; I am very spill-prone and pet friendly. I just like the other touches in these rooms. My farmhouse is comfy, well lit, warm, and functional, allowing us to do lots of cooking, relaxing, and entertaining.

What’s your dream house like?
