Blogging is and always has been a hobby for me. I am often asked, in job interviews and by potential clients, how I got into blogging, and the answer is pretty simple. I wanted to do something that I was excited about every day, and I love writing. I was working for a great textbook publishing company when I started; I saw how passionate some people were about the work they were doing in education and thought, what makes me tick?

Food, wine, travel, lifestyle. All of those things interested me, and while never hard-hitting journalism, blogging about them became important. As a fairly anxious worrywart who needs to tune the world out a little at the end of the day, a “brain candy” site sometimes provided the perfect escape for me and hopefully for my readers.

I’ve been blogging for almost seven years, and I have considered quitting  at least five times over the years, but then I remember that this space is mine and it can change and evolve as I want it to. I’ve gone from blogging twice a day some days (How I did that, I do not know.) to a pretty regular schedule of two blog posts a week, which works with my current work situation and makes me happy. Tip one – make sure blogging makes you happy!

quote on consistency - source unknown

  • Develop some sort of consistency. Even if it’s just once a week, set aside time for yourself to sit down and work on an editorial calendar and a post. My editorial calendar lives on an index card and includes posts I want to write, recipes I want to try, and a list of any travel, restaurants, wines, etc. that I plan to write about.
  • Learn to say no! When blogging, it’s easy to want to attend every event you are invited to and write every sponsored post offered to you. Who doesn’t want to make money and be recognized? But there’s a line between being an authentic blogger and a product pusher. Say no to products and sponsorships that don’t fit your content or your values. Say no to events that might drain your energy or creativity. Too many blogs have become 365 sponsored posts, and while lucrative for the blogger, no one wants to read a stream of commercials. Hint – forcing the writing isn’t fun for you either.
  • Share what you love, not what you think might get the most traffic. When I first started blogging, I was really into healthy living blogs and tried to emulate them. It turned out writing about running and dieting wasn’t fun for me. My wine blog posts are some of my lesser-viewed posts, but I love writing about wine, so I still share them. Even if just a few dozen people are seeing a post, you never know where it might end up or how you might be helping someone.
  • Let your true colors show. One of the reason blogs took off and became so influential is because they were real. No, you don’t have to share every tiny detail of your life, but being authentic and personable makes you seem like that friend who someone can depend on for recommendations, advice, and a great story. Sometimes, a stream of thought or day in the life post is all you need to add a little of your voice and a sneak peek into your life. I love reading them!
  • Read other blogs and be supportive of other bloggers. Blogging can be a great community builder. I met some wonderful lifelong friends through this blog, and though most of them have stopped blogging, we still stay in touch, and they are very important to me. Whether you’re meeting great friends or professional contacts, blogging makes your world so much bigger.
  • Live to blog, don’t blog to live. Even if your blog IS your living,  blogs written by people having vibrant, hands-on experiences are always the best to read. Again, don’t force it. The more into what you are writing about you are, the more you will shine.
  • Read your own blog. I love my old posts! There are so many recipes, wine recommendations, and travel memories that I can go look back on and that can still be useful to readers. The other day I was rereading a post about a horrible week I’d had, life-changing for sure, but now I can’t even remember what happened. Past writing = perspective.

I can go on and on with tips on keeping blogging fresh and fun, but one of the best things about blogs are the comment sections! Tell me, if you are a blogger, what is your biggest key to maintaining a long-lasting blog? And blog readers, what keeps you a fan for the long haul/what makes you close your laptop and walk away from the screen?

I read a lot of blogs. My Sites I love (which needs updates!) page probably captures about half of them, and past Friday Foodie Features have been another attempt to share some more of those blogs with you. The feature has fallen by the wayside; I actually thought it would be easier to find a weekly feature just by putting a call out at the end of each post, but no such luck!

Since I do read so many blogs, I thought it would be fun to share with each other what we are reading every so often. Below are just a few of the great posts, in no particular order, that have caught my eye in recent days and are bookmarked for future use.

Cake, Batter, and Bowl Breakfast Sandwiches with Leeks, Brie, and Avocado Because it makes me want it to be Saturday for a lazy brunch at home, right this minute!

Chef Robin White The Ceja Virtual Wine Dinner – Here’s How it Works Because the next best thing to a dinner with Robin is a virtual dinner with her. I am hoping to participate in at least a few courses of this meal from Boston!

Food to Run for Race Recap: The Boston Marathon Because Lizzy is a rockstar for running Boston on such a warm day. . . or any day! She pushed through lots of difficult moments, and I love this recap!

The Purple Foodie Tomato and Rosemary Focaccia – Because this post combines a comfy bread recipe with fresh golden tomatoes, a sign that summer is not too far away.

Simple Hedonisms Wine of the Week – Sheldon 2009 Graciano Ripkin Vineyard, Lodi Because I love Sheldon wines and their story, and if I had a wine of the week, this would definitely be one of them!

A Cambridge Story Homemade Bagels Because MA bagels rarely live up to this Jersey girl’s standards, and Emily makes it seem so easy to make your own!

Delightful Repast Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie Because I have been dying for some Shepherd’s pie, and we still have the wintry weather to make this!

A Thought for Food Recipe: Individual Cheese Souffles Because these souffles are gorgeous and probably something I would never dream of attempting, so I’ll live vicariously through this post!

What are some of your favorite recent posts from the blog-o-sphere ? Feel free to include a link, even if it is one of your own posts you are particularly excited about!

Happy Christmas Eve, everyone! I hope you are having a fun and festive day if you celebrate, and if not, I hope you get some time off work. I am in NJ with my family, running a speed workout at my high school track, visiting my nana, and spending dinner at my uncle’s house as I have for countless Christmas Eves in the past.

Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is Bianca from Confessions of a Chocoholic. Bianca’s blog is delicious and delightful, full of chocolate-y treats, indulgent meals out, Boston events, with a little bit of health and fitness thrown in for the perfect balance. I met Bianca over dinner at Mistral this fall, and all I can say is that she is fun, genuine, and fabulous, just like she comes across in her blog. Once you are done reading Bianca’s Friday Foodie Feature, be sure to check out her favorite posts, especially the Caramel Pecan Shortbread Cups!

Confessions of a Chocoholic

How long have you been blogging?

I started Confessions of a Chocoholic in 2008 but only a few close friends knew about it. I started getting more serious with it – writing more often, publicizing my blog, and becoming more active in the blogging community – earlier this year.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

I love to write and I love food, and with blogging I can combine my two passions. I am able to share my favorite recipes, food items, restaurant reviews and other activities through my blog. I think food, love, and memories are always intertwined, and with blogging, I can document and chronicle a lot of great moments. I also adore the sense of community and the extremely supportive, inspiring, and fun group of fellow bloggers and readers I encounter every day.

Least favorite?

The bad lighting in my apartment makes it challenging for me to take great pictures for my blog. But I make do with it!

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

This is a hard question; it’s like asking a parent to choose a favorite kid! Haha. I have a few favorites (blog posts, not kids): I really enjoyed recapping my Italy trip (Part 1: Milan, Part 2: Venice, Part 3: Tuscany) – it was my first time to visit Europe and I had a wonderful time with my parents. I also had a terrific time writing Nose To Tail Eating: A Long Hard Look at The Food Trend Sweeping the U.S. – that was originally an article for one of my classes at Harvard and I put in A LOT of work researching the topic. Most recently, I’ve been going back to my post for Caramel Pecan Shortbread Cups – I’ve made them a couple more times again and I really think they are the perfect holiday treat!

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I predict better food pictures in my future… I also would love to have more regular readers and commenters, and for my blog to be featured in other publications as well.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

It’s important to write about things you are passionate about, and to let your personality shine. Confessions of a Chocoholic is primarily a food blog, but at the end of the day, it is also a personal blog so I write about my other interests too, like running and Bikram yoga (in fact, my Tips on How to Survive and Love Hot Yoga is the most shared post on my blog). Readers not only appreciate the variety, but it gives everyone a glimpse into your life as well. Also, I think blogging has benefitted my immensely – I get to write regularly, meet new friends, appreciate food even more, and share my culinary experiences!

Thanks for a fun feature, Bianca! Smile

One of my goals for 2011, in the spirit of the Friday Foodie Feature, is to open up even more space for guest contributors. I love being able to introduce new bloggers (or readers!) to the blog-o-sphere, and I love having perspectives and experiences other than my own. I have tweeted about it before, but if you are seriously interested in contributing a post or several posts on food, wine, travel, or a Friday Foodie Feature post, please just shoot me an email! All appropriate posts will be welcome Winking smile

Happy Christmas Eve! Don’t forget to catch It’s a Wonderful Life if you are home tonight.
