It’s no secret that food bloggers are generally in love with Whole Foods Market. It was perhaps one of the first places that I shopped where I started to think food was art; I can still just wander around looking at their unique displays and hard-to-find goodies. I love it so much, Whole Foods even gets a shout-out in my About page. So it was a perfect match last night when Whole Foods River Street in Cambridge hosted its first blogger event.

Whole Foods River Street

Held in the café, just off of the drool worthy hot bar and salad bar areas, the event was in a cozy, enclosed place that perfectly fit the obviously excited group of bloggers in attendance. I arrived at the event with Megan, who was kind enough to pick a bunch of us up at Central Square, and Daisy, Elizabeth, and Kathy. Once we were checked in, we got to check out the awesome display of food that Whole Foods put out for us.

The cheese display was first and was the love of my evening. Sean from Whole Foods’ cheese department told us all about the selection and gave us some great ideas for making holiday treats such as rolling goat cheese logs in nuts or herbs for an easy, delicious cheese spread.

We sampled several goat cheese spreads including one with a mix of olives and one with Peppadew peppers which Megan and I quickly became addicted to. Peppadew peppers are neither sweet nor hot; they are somewhere in the middle, and they are so flavorful and go perfectly with goat cheese. In fact, I have eaten these little red gems stuffed with sweet goat cheese in the Naschmarkt in Vienna. I can’t wait to make this dip for Christmas.

The cheese table also included a variety of other cheeses, tortilla crackers, and marcona almonds.

Sean knew a ton about cheese, and we bloggers were clearly engaged, judging by the fact that the cheese table had a small crowd all evening!

Whole Foods also shared a variety of hot appetizers like creamy Swedish meatballs, arancini, chicken satay, and stuffed mushrooms. As expected, everything was fresh, made with the best ingredients, and kept us going back for more.

And while I flocked to the cheese and other appetizers, those with a sweet tooth were not left out. Tarts, mini cheesecakes, and cupcakes decorated with festive sprinkles and snowflakes.

Throughout the evening, we also tasted some of the beer and wine that Whole Foods carries. The Cisco Brewers’ Santa’s Beered had a festive spice to it and is definitely a beer that would fit right in at our house. I also tasted a just-okay Cabernet Sauvignon from Three Wishes, and a special Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha that had a nice acidity and drinkability factor. Smile

The room was decorated with all sorts of seasonal touches like cranberries, pinecones, and greenery; the team at Whole Foods really went all out to make it a great evening.

And, as dutiful food bloggers, in a hilarious exodus, I think every one of us did some shopping after we left. I picked up my beloved hot Grillo’s Pickles and Real Pickles fermented cabbage. If I had realized my husband was picking me up rather than having me take the train home, I would have left with a lot more!

It was so nice of Whole Foods to host us, and I was really happy to meet some new bloggers, catch up with old friends, and to eat a lot of yummy cheese! It really put me in the holiday spirit.

Where do you do your grocery shopping? Do you have a Whole Foods Market near you?

In case you missed it, I am hosting a giveaway from Kerrygold! Check it out!

Six Hour Dinner

What did we eat? What didn’t we eat? After weeks of planning a Sunday afternoon potluck, a few Boston bloggers and I finally got together yesterday to eat, drink, and be merry, For six hours. As I wrote this post last night, I was so stuffed I may never need to eat again. It was worth every single bite. Besides, we probably burned some of if off laughing. This was one of those events that should have a video recap to capture some of the fun kitchen antics, but alas, a blog post will have to do.

The stage: the home of Megan from Delicious Dishings

The cast:

Megan,  homemade pumpkin ice cream sundaes with gingerbread croutons and spiced caramel

Alicia from The Clean Plate Club, muhammara dip, mushroom pate, shrimp and grits

Daisy from Indulge, Inspire, Imbibe, leek and parsnip soup, warm Brussels sprout salad

Michelle from Fun and Fearless in Beantown, Mama Chang’s pork dumplings, cold peanut noodle salad

I made a white truffle white bean dip and a tortilla española.

The plot: Five food bloggers who just happen to get along really, really well together for a day of food and fun, starting off with a little bit of bubbly from Mayo Family Winery, Nicholas Feuillate, and Veuve Clicquot, and a bottle of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau

wine and Champagne

There was much to celebrate on this chilly, late-November New England afternoon, two engagements, a new job, some employment liberation, and new friendships that had formed over the course of the past months.

Megan’s beautiful kitchen was set for a feast with lovely autumn touches here and there, cozy food aromas filling the air.

We were busy bees in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches on scrumptious dishes.

The Clean Plate Club

Never have I seen so many people in one kitchen, working in harmony and happy to be there.

Rows of soup bowls waited, creamy grits bubbled away on the stove as a warm Brussels sprout salad sat ready for goat cheese to be added, making this most beloved vegetable impossible to turn down.

The clicks and flashes of cameras prevailed throughout the day, being tired from cooking and eating could not keep these bloggers down.

The evening was sealed with a sweet, the most perfect autumn dessert imaginable, homemade pumpkin ice cream, spiced caramel, with gingerbread croutons.

One blog post can’t capture the excellence of this gathering of creative, smart, lovers of food, food writing, and wine. More to come, including links to recipes for these amazing dishes and a couple of posts on my contributions.

Happy short week! Do you ever plan potlucks with friends? Do you have a particular dish or theme you like to stick to?

The Foodbuzz staff have outdone themselves again this year with the 2nd annual Foodbuzz Festival gala dinner. San Francisco’s Ferry Building set the scene for an elegant, exceptional evening that seemed to go off without a hitch.

After a day at the tasting pavilion, Elina, Elizabeth, and I took a taxi over to the Ferry Building and immediately encountered staff busy creating our multi-course meal.

The Ferry Building at night is spectacularly lit and much quieter than it is during the day! Its architecture is both strong and delicate, its expansive great halls adorned with lovely details.

Ferry Building

Food-friendly Bonny Doon Vineyards wine led us through each course, starting with cocktail hour little bites like cheese gougère paired with 2009 Ca’ del Solo Muscat. As we tasted through trays of passed treats, I noticed how exceptionally well the Muscat went with each bite, especially the zucchini and parmesan Madelines with cured salmon and lemon pepper cream. This Muscat is incredibly refreshing and was the perfect wine to sip while we waited for the main event.

Once the eager Foodbuzz Festival attendees had the chance to enter the main event space, the upstairs event space at the Ferry Building, we discovered a magically transformed room with twinkly candle-lighting and whimsical green centerpieces.

And a drool-worthy menu specially created for the Fooduzz Festival.

The first course, a Roasted Golden Beet Tart paired with 2009 Bonny Doon Vineyard Ca’ del Solo Albarino, disappeared really quickly. Somehow, despite an afternoon of eating at the tasting pavilion, I was hungry. Not to mention, the creamy, earthy tart and peppery arugula were delicious with the crispness of the Albarino.

Next up were Seared Scallops with Bonny Doon Vineyard Verjus Beurre Blanc, paired with 2007 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Blanc. On our visit to Bonny Doon (post to come!) we ordered some of the Verjus, a non-alcoholic Grenache that is addictive all by itself but is also an excellent addition to a variety of dishes. I can not wait to cook with it and to recreate this simply mouthwatering scallop recipe. Loads of fennel, perfectly cooked scallops, and a buttery, tart Verjus Beurre Blanc made this my favorite dish of the night.

The main course was lamb, but the wait staff at the Ferry Building was exceptional and asked each person at the table individually about food restrictions. For those of us who didn’t eat lamb, they offered a Black Cod over Butternut Squash Puree and Local Mushrooms. The wine pairing with this course was 2006 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Volant and while it was intended for the lamb, I thought it went beautifully with the hearty fish and seasonal sides.

We just kept eating! The final course, dessert, was a Tarta de Almendras with Oranges served with 2008 Bonny Doon Vinferno dessert wine. The fragrant but light almond tart and ripe figs provided only a hint of sweetness which made the sweet honey flavors and heavier body of the wine a great match. Like everything else at Foodbuzz Festival, this menu was designed with a great attention to detail.

The Foodbuzz Festival gala dinner, like the rest of the event, was filled with such a positive buzz of ideas and friendships being built. It went by so quickly but not without the opportunity for lots of networking and laughing.

I am home again in Boston and slightly panicking about the job hunt. While I planned on taking at least a month fully off, it is SUCH an odd feeling, and I am hoping to have some solid job leads in the near future. In the meantime, there is writing to do, reading for wine class, and bread to bake!
