Our trip to Mystic to stay at the Inn at Mystic was the perfect New England weekend getaway. Well, it would have been better if it was 80 degrees, but it was pretty nice just as it was. We enjoyed blue skies and blue seas, with some winery visits (Saltwater Farm and Jonathan Edwards) and great food. The Mystic Seaport is a must-visit for your Mystic Getaway. It appeals to all ages, with its impressive ships, history, and beautiful coastal views.

The Seaport is home to all sorts of ships, including the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in the world.

Also in Mystic Seaport is the Mayflower II, which was open for its last day before going under repairs. It was pretty cool that we were some of the last of the public to get to go aboard for years. It was also scary being that high up and out of the water!

The Gerda III is a beautiful boat docked in Mystic, with a very special past. A Danish boat built as a work boat, the Gerda III smuggled Jewish people from Nazi occupied Denmark to Sweden. It made me think of Number the Stars, a book I loved as a child. It gave me chills to think of the cramped, uncomfortable, and scary conditions people faced as they fled for their lives.

Gerda The 19th century village features all sorts of fun buildings like a grocery store, candy store, church, a sail loft, bank, and more. I liked strolling through, and I know my history-loving younger self would have loved to imagine living there!

The buildings in Mystic Seaport are not replicas; they are original buildings brought from villages around New England, and they help you get a sense of what life was like in coastal New England long ago. We look forward to returning to Mystic for a weekend getaway for more fine dining, ocean air breathing, wine tasting, and learning about seafaring history. Mystic is a perfect weekend getaway from the Boston or New York areas.

We skipped right through spring, and lately it has felt like summer is in full effect. I will take it! I  wouldn’t mind summer three seasons of the year, to be honest. Just in time for summer, Dorchester has a new ice cream spot, and we were delighted to attend the opening party last week.

Chill on Park is in the Fields Corner neighborhood of Dorchester, near Dorchester Ave and the baseball fields there. It’s a busy area and the perfect spot for an ice cream and coffee shop.

The space is really beautiful, modern, bright, and peaceful. It’s well designed and offers free WiFi so would be a great place for a meeting or remote work.

They offer a variety of different ice cream flavors, shakes, ice cream pies, and other treats. The salted caramel moose tracks was my favorite ice cream, but there are many more I want to try. Everything here is local, from the staff, hired through local groups like the Boys & Girls Club, to the ice cream, which comes from Puritan Ice Cream in Roslindale. I love Dorchester, so when I see people investing in businesses and kids in the neighborhood, I am always happy to support.

One of the perks of the opening party were adult milkshakes, which won’t be served regularly. They were delicious though, and they gave me ideas for making similar treats at home. I had the Irish milkshake, and it was outstanding.

The Cookies & Cream was good too!

The party also featured a cake made by one of our favorites, Green Hills, another Dorchester business, and cookies made by Haley House. How great would it be if all businesses in our area leaned on one another with such support?

Chill on Park is the perfect place to go to fix that sweet summer ice cream craving while helping to build a business that is in turn striving to be something bigger in the community. I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again, especially when nieces and nephews are visiting. I am also looking forward to Chill on Park’s coffee.

I was invited to this event as a guest and treats were complimentary. All opinions are my own.

Our weekend in Mystic was short, and we wanted to cram in as much sightseeing as possible. Despite this. we managed to fit in two really great wineries, both which offered beautiful scenery and impressive wines. First there was Salwater Farm Vineyard, where we enjoyed a tasting and beautiful views. We also visited Jonathan Edwards Winery. a unique property in that is makes wine from both estate grown Connecticut grapes as well as grapes from Napa Valley. Out in the country, surrounded by land and horses, the area that Jonathan Edwards in is absolutely stunning.

Our visit was on a cold and cloudy day, yet plenty of people sat outside with their wine, enjoying the view. I can imagine that the winery is really spectacular in the summer!

Inside was just as beautiful, with lots of light and wood and traditional country touches.

Jonathan Edwards CT Chardonnay

We loved the space, but the wines truly wowed us. We tasted through seven wines. Most notable was the back-to-back tasting of their Connecticut Chardonnay and Napa Chardonnay. The wine made from CT grapes won me over! Notes of citrus and bakes pear make this wine both crisp and luscious, creamy, with a hint of oak, ideal for Connecticut coastal cuisine. We also loved the Napa Valley Merlot, with grapes from Yountville, for its earth, tobacco, berries, and spice. I was hoping to try their CT Cab Franc, but they weren’t pouring it yet, giving me another reason to return!

Jonathan Edwards Winery

The winery was welcoming and encouraged us to take our glasses out to explore. Always happy in the country, especially where there are vineyards, we bundled up and braved the early spring (really felt like winter) to breath some fresh air and soak in the beautiful quiet.

Jonathan Edwards offers some elegant and flavorful wines from two very different regions, along with excellent hospitality and a relaxing space just perfect for a little getaway. Add it to your Mystic weekend itinerary!
