I avoided meal services for a really long time. Not only did I avoid them, but for a while, I was completely against them. I sometimes love meal planning and cooking, and even at my busiest, getting into the kitchen is stress relief. I thought ordering a pre-measured meal service was lazy and wasteful and creativity-robbing.

And then I had the opportunity last week to try Just Add Cooking for a review on the blog and I loved it. Loved loved loved it. I wish that I had discovered it this past summer when I was too busy to cook and too tired to eat and lived on tortilla chips and takeout for days.

justaddcooking Just Add Cooking provides customers with three or more delicious meals each week. The menu changes weekly, and orders placed on Wednesday are delivered on Sunday or Monday, depending on location.

We chose Coq au Vin, Pork Stroganoff, and Chana Saag for our three meals, and on Sunday afternoon, the box of food arrived. I was so excited! One really great upside of Just Add Cooking is that it is based in Boston and food is sourced locally, so food is packed and delivered same-day via courier.

I got to unpacking right away and noted that there was very little packaging compared to what I have heard about from other services. The packaging was one of the main reasons I shied away from ordering a meal service like this, and I was really pleased the way this was packaged. I also loved that the order had everything I needed for the meals except for oil, salt, and pepper.

An envelope containing spices and recipes also contained a welcome note that listed where all of the ingredients came from, mostly New England. I loved that the food was sourced from small farms.

On our first night we made the Coq au Vin, and it couldn’t have been easier. The recipe was simple to follow, and it was amazing that everything was portioned and measured for me. It made it easy for my husband, who isn’t super comfortable cooking on his own, to feel confident making dinner. This service is really perfect for those who don’t have much cooking experience. And if, like me, you love to cook and feel great doing it, it’s a nice rest to not have to think about anything; it’s all there!

recipe chopping veggies The Coq au Vin wasn’t very pretty, but it was delicious! My only gripes about this meal is that I wish there had been more of it and I wish it contained more veggies. I would add carrots next time to bump up the nutritional value. This came out exactly to two servings, which we devoured. The two other meals came out to about four servings, and left us plenty for lunch.

coq au vin I didn’t expect to love the Pork Stroganoff, but it was incredible, a lightly creamy stew over rice. Both the chicken and pork we had in our order were stellar, tender cuts of meat and clearly really high quality, some of the best meat we have ever had at home.

I missed photographing our final meal, the Chana Saag, but it was a coconutty-curry with kale and chickpeas over jasmine rice, and it was incredible, especially topped with the supplied chutney and cilantro. I also added some coconut from home to make it even more flavorful.

The spices in each dish were perfectly measured and balanced making the meals flavorful and really enjoyable. I’ve been busy and stressed, and I really enjoyed knowing what we were having for dinner and almost being able to go on auto-pilot to get dinner on the table each day. Three meals for two people is $68, which is a lot less than a lot of the takeout we get, in it was much better knowing where our food came from and what exactly went into it.

And now the best news. . .

Just Add Cooking is offering boxes starting at $39 for a 2-person, 3-meal box (normally $69) and $69 for a 4-person, 3-meal box (normally $109). This is for the first box for new customers and the price will be automatically applied to your first purchase if you visit www.justaddcooking.com and register by clicking “Get Cooking.”

Thank you to Just Add Cooking for the complimentary meals!

~~~~~~~~~
I am always a little bit (okay, more than a little bit) wary when a celebrity launches a wine brand. For some, it’s likely a decision that is made because they’ve done everything else, why not wine. For others, it’s a good business decision or one driven by passion for the product.
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the launch party for Champy, a sparkling wine produced in collaboration between Boston’s own Jenny Johnson and Sonoma County winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster. Jenny is known for being a bubbly TV personality and producer but also a very smart and savvy businesswoman, and since I love Sonoma wine, I was really intrigued by the launch.
Champy
The event was held at the newly opened Yvonne’s, formerly Locke-Ober, in Downtown Crossing. The space is absolutely gorgeous, and I, coming from a casual work-at-home day, was incredibly underdressed. Yvonne’s is definitely a reason to dress up, noted.
Yvonne's Boston
The private party was in an area off of the bar, and guests received glasses of Champy as we arrived. It took just one sip for me to love this wine. It is delicious! It’s well-balanced, with a nice acidity, notes of granny smith apple and lemon, and lots of bubbles. Like me, Jenny is a lover of bubbly not just for special occasions, and this wine would definitely be a fun one to pop open on an average night to add something a little something special.
The wine is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, with fruit sourced from Sonoma, Mendocino, and Napa counties, and I loved that in it I could taste California wine country, which always feels a little bit like home to me.
Champy
There’s a lovely, celebratory spirit behind the brand with the tag line: Be present. Be spontaneous. Be Champy.
With the temperatures dipping way too low for my tastes, Champy is a great bubbly to add a little sunshine to your day and help you to remember to celebrate the everyday.
Champy will be available in Fall/Winter 2015 and will retail for $24.99.
Chicago graced us with gorgeous, warm fall weather, blue skies, and good friends and family. We walked miles and miles and I took hundreds of photos, making it difficult to narrow down photos into blog posts.
Below I have included just a sampling of the sights we saw in Chicago. Stay tuned for some more specific recaps in the next few weeks.
Chicago skyline
Chicago skyline
We made a point to walk along Lake Michigan every day so we could take in as much of its beautiful scenery as possible. The Chicago skyline against blue skies and the grandness of the lake was breathtaking. I want a gorgeous, spacious apartment on the Gold Coast and a dog I can walk along the lake twice a day. Too much to ask?
Public Hotels Chicago
We stayed at the Public Hotel Chicago, and it was absolutely amazing. Our room was simple, chic, and comfortable with an incredible view of the Sears Tower. The hotel decor was just stunning, and the bars served creative craft cocktails and great service. I was so sad when we had to check out of this hotel.
Fado Irish Pub
We visit an Irish bar in every city we go to, and after my friend finished the Chicago Marathon, we had late night drinks at Fado, where the bartender was from the same teeny tiny village in the West of Ireland as my brother-in-law’s dad, who was his family doctor. Small world indeed.
Michigan Ave
Chicago in Autumn
Chicago does it up for fall, and there were gorgeous mum displays, pumpkins, and more everywhere we looked. I adored all of the gardens, and it made me want to pay more attention to all of the beauty in my own city.
The Drake Chicago
The Drake Chicago I am a huge fan of old hotels, so a visit to The Drake Hotel was a must-do for me.  Old wood and leather made for a great atmosphere, and strong Irish coffees warmed us up after walking around in the shade of Michigan Ave buildings. I love to imagine the heyday of old hotels, and of course I like to think there is a bit of haunting history in them.
Navy Pier Navy Pier ferris wheel Navy Pier
Navy Pier was one of my favorite places the entire weekend. The sun was shining, a beer stand sold cold local beers, and we were able to take in the sun, sights, and sounds while relaxing lakeside. There is so much happening at Navy Pier. I loved the lush Crystal Gardens, and I want to return for some Shakespeare in the summer.
Tribune Tower ChicagoChicago Tribune Tower   Tribune Tower
We had the good fortune of having Max The Urbanologist as our tour guide one afternoon, and we met at the famed Tribune Tower, which features pieces from famous structures around the world.
Three Dots and a DashThree Dots and a Dash Max took us along the Riverwalk, showed us points of interest, and led us to the subterranean Three Dots and a Dash where we shared a Zombie Punch, a fun and very large tiki drink.
Chicago Riverwalk
The Riverwalk was another favorite part of our visit to Chicago. I loved being able to watch the boats go by, and we made a couple of stops to Flanders Beer & Belgian Frites to grab beers (Matilda and Sofie, favorites from our Goose Island tour) and fries. I loved that we could take beers to go and wander with them around the Riverwalk. It’s something that would never happen in Boston, but it makes perfect sense and definitely made us feel like we were being treated like responsible adults. We found cocktails available to go in the train station, airport, and other places, and didn’t see anyone abusing the perk.
cocktails to go
Union Station Chicago And finally, there was the architecture. We did an architectural boat tour, which I will recap in a separate post, but Union Station was one of the most spectacular buildings to me. I love old train stations just like I love old hotels, and even if you aren’t taking a train, Union Station is worth a stroll.
Have you ever been to Chicago? What was your favorite part?
