Winter is a great time to visit Napa Valley, and while I unfortunately don’t have a Napa or Sonoma trip planned until summer, I wanted to pass along some information on Yountville’s winter festivities in case any of my readers are planning a trip. We have visited Yountville many times, and we have enjoyed wine tasting at Jessup Cellars and Ma(i)sonry and some great meals at Bardessono and Bottega.

  • The Art House Short Film Series continuing through March at Jessup Cellars Tasting Gallery features monthly art house films paired with flavor-infused popcorn wok-popped to order. Chef Mike serves up Zinfandel Port paired with Winter Spice Popcorn (cinnamon, allspice, cloves and a touch of honey), Cabernet Sauvignon paired with Bacon Smoked Sea Salt Popcorn, Sauvignon Blanc with Green Onion Garlic Popcorn, and more, eleven amazing combinations in all.
  • Chefs on the Vintage Estate, home to the luxurious Villagio Inn and Spa, harvest their Meyer lemons all winter long, and use them to stir up fresh, house-made batches of lemon curd.  This creamy, dreamy condiment debuts at afternoon teas alongside tender pastries and in luscious Meyer Lemon Tarts.
  • Mad for fermentation, Chef Richard Reddington of Redd and Redd-Wood house-ferments winter vegetables from the garden, cures his own meats and makes three kinds of sausage, including breakfast sausage spiked with maple syrup, and his own, mouth-watering Italian-style cotechino.
  • Have you ever wondered how the experts can detect aromas of summer blackberry, nutmeg or even chocolate in a wine’s bouquet? Winemakers Bell Cellars help train palates using fresh fruit, herbs, and other delectables representing wine flavors and aromas. Students of the vine are guaranteed to savor the preferred drink of Bacchus in a way they never have before.
  • Pics of Chef Victor Scargle’s Brussels sprout plants could very well be the most-Tweeted image from Lucy’s Restaurant.  Yountville is heart-healthy thanks to Chef Scargle.  He has planted a rainbow palette of cruciferous vegetables in his kitchen garden, considered vital for vibrant health. Take a saunter through the Romanesco, broccoli cheddar cauliflower and violet broccaflower. The most intriguing of all has turned out be the oft-maligned but definitely interesting Brussels sprouts–visitors always appreciate these cute mini-cabbages more after their visit to Lucy.
  • Michelin starred chef-spottings: Pancha’s is Yountville’s only true dive bar, family-owned and operated for decades, offering cheap drinks and pool tables.  It’s a great spot to rub elbows with local chefs and vintners after hours. Just head through the vintage hitching posts out front.

CabFestNV — February 28, March 1 & 2  — NEW!  Napa Valley’s first Cabernet festival, and it’s in Yountville!

Napa Valley’s legendary Cabernets finally have their own festival. The festival kicks off Friday with a salute to “Cigars & Guitars,” including a live concert, cigar party, and showing of rare classic guitars. Then, on the weekend, more than 100 of Napa Valley’s top wineries pour. lincolntheater.com/cabfest/

Taste of Yountville — March 14-16 — Yountville’s downtown street party!

Taste of Yountville signals the transition from winter to spring in Wine Country, when the mustard is blooming and grapes are beginning to bud.  This is the village’s celebration of the year featuring its signature street party with food, wine, art and music, plus other weekend happenings all over this charming town.  yountville.com/events/taste-of-yountville-2

Row 34

What started out as a quick stop for a few oysters while we waited out particularly bad traffic, turned into a full fledged dinner at the bar (my favorite) with rounds of Cava, perfect recommendations, and great conversation. Row 34 in Boston’s buzzing Fort Point area is one of my new favorite places. If we didn’t have to work the next day and weren’t moving a few days later (more on that at a later date!), we could have easily hung out at the bar into the night. Row 34 is just an easy place to be. At first, because it is sparsely decorated and pretty spacious, I thought it might be a little cold and stiff. That was not the case at all. In fact, I would call it cozy, and the food is to die for.

Once seated at the bar, I decided on bubbly, because there’s pretty much no occasion where I don’t want sparkling wine. Row 34 had a few options, and I decided on a zippy Bohigas Brut Reserva Cava. My husband loved their selection of beers, which included beer from Row 34’s neighbor Trillium.

As we slurped oysters, we tried to decide on the rest of our order. Row 34 is definitely a place where you will want many courses of small bites. There are just too many to try, and in our experience, they are all incredible.

This is Deviled Crab Toast, chunks of tangy crab on buttery toast, with a little freshness from a watercress garnish. Simple, perfect.

We also devoured Shrimp Sliders with crunchy pickles (times two, our first order was so good we needed more), Tuna Tartare, Tuna Crudo, and Smoked Salmon. I love the extensive and creative raw bar offerings; they go well beyond your typical shellfish options. The Tuna Crudo was from the raw bar menu, and the black garlic sauce left me wanting to lick the plate.

The restaurant  also offers larger plates and a pretty mouthwatering list of fried seafood and sauces that I will definitely be trying on my next visit. Row 34 is definitely one of those places you want to go again and again, which is always nice to find. Steel and Rye is another one of those places; I can’t get enough!

Massachusetts can be a magical place to live and vacation. From the Berkshires to Provincetown, our beautiful Commonwealth has so much to offer and a season for every taste. Cape Cod is one of those places that makes it so special. Gray shingled houses, hydrangeas, endless coastline and sparkling blue sea. My love affair with the Cape began long ago when I vacationed there as a child, and I still seek out every possible opportunity to visit. This past weekend we headed across the Sagamore Bridge and along the Cape to Chatham, where we celebrated our favorite newlyweds at Chatham Bars Inn.

Named as one of the leading hotels in the world, Chatham Bars Inn is an expansive property comprised of cottages and a main building, along with a golf course, beach, several restaurants, and spa. Its views are unparalleled; it is the epitome of Cape Cod luxury. The rooms are simply decorated with a beach house theme, clean, comfortable, and offering luxurious little touches like Nespresso machines and gas fireplaces.  Restaurants in the main building, including Stars and The Veranda offer stunning views of the sea, a perfect place for a glass of wine.

Our friends happened to be having their mini moon in one of the cottages as Chatham Bars Inn, and we enjoyed toasting with bubbles and their delicious handcrafted cocktails while taking in views of the harbor and splashing seals. We spent a lot of time on their balcony, for very good reason.

We also had the fantastic treat of checking out the wine cellar at Chatham Bars Inn’s main building. Their cellar is beautiful, and I could have browsed all day. Guests can plan ahead for wine tastings in this lovely space; I already may have hinted at 35th birthday plans.

Sacred Cod

The variety of restaurants at Chatham Bars Inn makes for some nice choices throughout the day. Once we had enough of the cool breezes outside, we huddled on cozy couches for drinks and a snack, this gorgeous, smoky, sweet slab of candied bacon.

 

Chatham Cape CodIn addition to its spectacular seaside location, Chatham Bars Inn is also within walking distance to the town of Chatham, and we did a little bit of exploring. Autumn in New England is certainly a special time that people travel the world over to experience. Chatham was dressed in its seasonal finest, and we were feeling pretty lucky to be there.

A long day outside led us to a late dinner out at the Impudent Oyster, a restaurant I would highly recommend. We had the most delightful server and lots of great food like mussels, sizzling garlic shrimp, dumplings, salads, soup and pasta dishes. The menu is extensive, and from what we ordered, delicious. It was perfect to be able to walk to our home for the night along a marshy, moonlit road, listening to frogs and crickets sing their night songs.

Once we retreated to our room, we loved just cozying up in its simple comforts. The beach house decor is inspiring; we are in the process of planning some redecorating, and I would love a serene, beach cottage like home. Instead of watching TV, we listened to classical music and watched the fireplace, feeling a million miles away from the city.

A gorgeous morning, croissants and coffee at Chatham Cookware, and a seal-filled walk on the beach rounded out our perfect little Chatham getaway. It was hard to hop back into the car to sit in bridge traffic, but we both felt rejuvenated and blessed for the wonderful time we had with great friends in a most perfect place.
