I have been dragging out the posts about our most recent trip to Sonoma and Napa for weeks. It was an amazing trip to one of my most favorite places, and it is a lot more interesting for me to write about than most other topics! Hopefully there will be another trip in my future, but until then, enjoy!

Following our visit to Ferrari-Carano, we headed down to St. Helena to meet a new friend for brunch at Gillwoods Cafe.  The drive was absolutely beautiful and made us want to stay forever. . .

We met Nicole, who works at V. Sattui and Castello di amorosa for a delicious brunch. Even though it was our first time meeting, she felt like an old friend, especially because she is from the Boston area!

I had incredible Huevos Rancheros topped with avocado, beans, sour cream, hot sauce, salsa, and cheese. Can I just say holy yum? 🙂 I also had a mimosa.

After we said our goodbyes, we headed down to Southern Sonoma Valley to check out a few more wineries before we had to head to San Francisco airport. We didn’t do a tasting, but we stopped by Imagery Estate Winery which was super crowded due to a barrel tasting event that was going on that weekend. We couldn’t get near the tasting bar! But I did get a good photo of this  massive paella that was cooking up at Imagery. It was a lovely winery, and it is definitely on my list for our next trip.

We decided to head a little further out to visit Gundlach Bundschu, one of the first wineries we ever visited in Sonoma and a winery whose wine club we belong to.

We started with a cool, refreshing 2008 Tempranillo Rose which tasted of strawberries and a bit of citrus. I love this wine, and I hope there is a bottle in our next wine club box 😉

Gundlach Bundschu offers a variety of really great wines. I especially enjoy their Syrah and Tempranillo.

We tasted through all of the available wines and took our last taste outside to sit by the lake on Gundlach Bundschu’s property.

It was an overcast afternoon, but it was warm and still and perfect for kicking back by the lake with a sip or two of wine.

After leaving Gundlach Bundschu, we headed into the town of Sonoma to get some food. Somehow we missed a lot of the lunch/brunch times, so we opted for Maya, a Mexican restaurant on Sonoma plaza. The hot chips and salsa provided when we arrived were delicious.

But the chile relleno was a little TOO cheesy and oily for my taste.

The “really good nachos” were really good, and our server brought me some of their homemade habanero hot sauce which was fantastically spicy.

We spent some time wandering around Sonoma, wondering what it might be like to live there, and taking notes on restaurants and wine tasting rooms we wanted to try on our next visit.

We concluded our time in Sonoma as we have on all of our trips, on the patio at Gloria Ferrer with a glass of Va de vi, a spectacular sparkling wine with a yeasty nose and a flavor of apples and figs  overlooking the vineyards below.

On the way back to San Francisco, we made a quick stop in Sausalito to walk along the water. I had never been to Sausalito, and I loved it. Next time I would definitely consider spending a night or two there. It is beautiful and quiet and check out those views across the bay!

We said our final goodbyes to a place we really love, and hopped on Virgin America for a short snooze on an overnight flight back to Boston.

In other news, Boston is positively BUZZING with Boston Marathon fever! The finish line is being constructed as are the stands, and Copley Square is a flurry of activity as Boston prepares for 25,000 runners and who knows how many spectators. Trying to decide on a birthday dinner spot while on vacation in California was difficult! Sonoma and Napa Valleys are foodie paradises, and with all of the choices I didn’t know what to do. Thank goodness for blogger friends! Lindsay suggested Scopa in Healdsburg, and when I took a look at their website, I was sold. I wanted something delicious and special but also comfortable, and Scopa fit the bill perfectly. If you ever want to go to Scopa, definitely make a reservation.

Scopa is TINY. Its a long, narrow room with a bar that seats no more than 8 people. Amazingly, everything is really well organized and runs smoothly, despite the tight space and tiny room.

We decided to eat at the bar, which is something we often do. I find it to be a cozy way to enjoy a meal, sitting side by side. It also makes sharing plates much easier, and Scopa was perfect for sharing. We started with a birthday toast with Iron Horse blanc de blancs bubbly. It was so yummy.

We started with the Scopa antipasto for two, a plate that was overflowing with grilled bread with different spreads, olives, chickpeas, tuna, and a variety of other delights.

Since I am on a total burratta kick, we shared the burratta with grilled bread and arugula. It was creamy and gooey and paired perfectly with the spice of the arugula and the crunchy grilled bread.

We also had a new favorite, grilled Caesar salad. Those are indeed anchovies on the crostini, and they were great! I found them more meaty and salty than fishy, and the nuttiness of the parmesan cheese brought out their flavors really well.

Next up, arancini with tomato sauce, cheesy bites of rice filled heaven.

Because it was my birthday, Scopa treated me to a glass of Italian dessert wine which was pink and delightfully sweet.

Located right on Healdsburg plaza, Scopa was the perfect choice for a celebratory dinner. The prices are very reasonable, the food is outstanding, and the atmosphere is cozy, romantic, and comfortable. Ahhhh I love love love Healdsburg. It is truly a paradise for food and wine lovers!

Our morning of wine tastings at Goosecross Cellars and Venge Vineyards was really hard to top, but we were really excited to hit up Healdsburg, my favorite town in all of Northern California.

Our first stop in Healdsburg was the UPS store where we were able to pack up and ship our Rodney Strong wine. This store was great! The staff was very helpful, and they will even go to a winery and pick up your wine and ship it for you.

My favorite part of the store was Bella.

Once we left the UPS store, I discovered that there was a self serve frozen yogurt store in the same complex. I have been wanting self serve fro yo since reading about it on Kelly’s blog, so we went for it.

After the fro yo, we were recharged and ready to wander around Healdsburg. It is such a beautiful, adorable, foodie town.

We stopped in at Murphy Goode to taste a few wines. I really liked their Petit Verdot, but I actually didn’t love their Liar’s Dice Zinfandel, which I have heard great things about. I want to give it a try on another day. The tasting room staff at Murphy Goode was very friendly and helpful.

After leaving Murphy Goode, we walked past Dry Creek Kitchen. I had wanted to have my birthday dinner at this restaurant, the home of the famed Charlie Palmer, but when I called to make a reservation, I was told that they were closed for Pigs and Pinot. 🙁 Walking by, I noticed a couple of familiar faces, Kevin Gillespie and Brian Voltaggio from Top Chef. I nervously walked over, asked for a photo, and Kevin was friendly enough to stand with me for this shot.

I was so excited! Meeting celebrity chefs is way more exciting than actors and actresses, in my opinion!

Could my birthday get any better?! It was perfect timing. After collecting myself, we continued walking around Healdsburg. We visited Ferrari-Carano’s tasting room, but I will post about that in a separate post as we visited their BEAUTIFUL winery the next day.
