Thanks for all of the blog birthday wishes! If you haven’t checked out the giveaway from yesterday’s post, definitely do!

This past weekend, I got to hit up Whole Foods Market which is a treat since it isn’t super convenient to get to from my house. After my lunch with the CE-Yo, I was in the mood for lots of organics.   In addition to veggies and fruits, I bought some Honest Tea Kombucha (my first!). I also got some Siggi’s yogurt, Maca powder, and Wellfleet oysters for a nice summer dinner.

We started with a major salad. Yellow beets, beet tops, roasted broccoli, and kale massaged with olive oil and lemon juice. Massaged kale is seriously amazing.

It’s definitely kind of fun to just get your hands in there and really rub the kale with lemon juice and oil.  Then I topped it with crushed red pepper and garlic powder.

Since we were having a light summer meal, the salad was huge and full of volume.

As a special treat, we had some fresh, briny Wellfleet oysters. Served with a simple red wine vinegar and black pepper mignonette, these oysters just said summer.

Our final course was a dessert soup. Originally planned as a soup course, this dish turned out yummy but definitely sweet enough to serve as a light dessert.

I started by macerating several cups of chopped strawberries in Travessia Vidal Blanc and chopped mint. I actually refrigerated this mixture overnight, and the flavors came together very nicely.

I had a fun little photo shoot 🙂

I added the strawberries, mint, and wine to the blender with about another cup of Vidal Blanc and a half cup of Greek yogurt. I pureed it until smooth and topped with more mint.

The soup chilled for about an hour before we ate it. It was cool, smooth, and sweet, the perfect ending to a summer meal. Next time I would think of adding ripe honeydew to this as well and maybe leaving some chopped fruit to the side to stir in at the last minute to mix up the texture a little.

I think you will be seeing many cold summer soups this summer! Gazpacho, cold beet soup, and more fruit soups. . . delicious and healthy and perfect for those nights you don’t want to heat up the kitchen!

I still need a Friday Foodie Feature for this Friday, so please let me know if you are interested!

It’s official. Summer is close by. From the opening of the Copley Farmer’s Market to the bright, raspberry painted toenails and gold sandals I rocked yesterday to the email from HR announcing that we close at 2:00 next Friday, all of the signs of one of my favorite seasons are here.

The Copley Square Farmer’s Market is every Tuesday and Friday, all summer long, and it is a feast for the senses. As the summer goes on, the offerings increase. Yesterday I was pretty surprised at how much local produce was available for late May. There were lots of greens like chard and spinach, a few varieties of radishes, and even organic strawberries!

I tend to stick to the same stalls, the Atlas Farms, Silverbrook Farms, and Keown Orchard stands, but yesterday I branched out and checked out the Siena Farms/Sofra stand. I ended up purchasing a bunch of these lovely “Easter egg” radishes.

And at another stall, grudgingly passing by these Red Velvet cupcakes. I love these, but I feel like I should buy veggies at a farmer’s market!

I browsed a variety of fresh, locally grown greens. I wanted a bit of everything but settled on a huge bunch of rainbow chard.

Atlas Farms had their first strawberries of the season, and they smelled amazing!

I thought about making strawberries my lunch. Don’t they look good? I am due for another strawberry salad sometime soon.

In addition to produce, the Siena stand offered Ana Sortun’s book and some of her Sofra spices. Chef Sortun owns Oleana, a Cambridge eatery that is on my list.

I am so excited about a summer of farmer’s markets! I love that blogging pushes me a little more to get out there, to get away from my desk during the day, and to take advantage of all of the local produce, cheese, eggs, and baked goods right outside my office door.  I also ran into Elina, camera in hand. It is easy to spot other bloggers! 🙂

I prepared the rainbow chard and radishes simply, with 4 cloves chopped garlic and a nice knob of Kerrygold butter. The flavors altogether were delicious! I love eating a big bowl of greens!

Interesting note about these shoes: I basically ruined them the first time I wore them. We were in Italy visiting my brother and sister in law, and we had a day trip planned to Civitella. My husband encouraged me to wear sneakers since we were trekking up hills and over steps that were hundreds of years old. Wear sneakers in the land of beautiful women and beautiful shoes?! I think not. So, I wore these, tripped on some old stairs, and scuffed the fronts. Battle scars, right? 🙂

I am a little behind on posting and am just getting around to Sunday now. That’s a good thing; it means I have a lot to write about! 🙂

Sunday was a scorcher in Boston, and this girl was a bit foolish and only used sunscreen on her face. Other than the ridiculous burn on my chest, back, and shoulders, it was a perfect day spent relaxing with my husband.

We started with another walk around Castle Island. You’ll see lots of these this summer. And if any of you live in the area, I would love to meet for a walk or jog some summer evening.

After our walk, we decided to head to the M.J. O’Connor’s in the new-ish Westin Hotel near Boston’s waterfront. My initial motivation in going here was that the bartender was named one of the best in Boston by the Improper Bostonian, and her signature drink is a perfectly pulled pint of Guinness, something my husband is quite the fan of (me too!).

We ate outside (bad idea for my skin!), and each opted to start with something a little lighter than a Guinness, a pint of Magner’s (Bulmer’s in Ireland) on ice.

Magners Cider

For my lunch, I had an Irish pub favorite, a veggie curry with jasmine rice and toasted almonds. Heavenly, coconutty curry sauce with carrots, zucchini, and summer squash made this dish a simple but amazing favorite.

I also got a side of the curry for dipping my husband’s chips. Ever since the marathon I had been craving Supermac’s, and Irish fast food chain that specializes in chips with good dipping sauces.

BLT Sandwich

Hubby had the “RLT” rashers (Irish bacon), lettuce, and tomato. I ate most of the chips and curry. Still milking that marathon for all I can get 🙂

After lunch, I went to Lambert’s fruit and veg market to get my garden started! I grow a small deck garden, but last year I got lots of grape tomatoes, basil, spinach, and habanero peppers out of my work. I love growing my own food.

Lambert’s was a serious sea of colors with every sort of plant imaginable. Their prices are very reasonable as well, and I love that it is a family owned business.

We also got the bulk of our produce for the week for less than $20. If you live in the Boston area, Lambert’s is definitely worth the drive just to get your fruits and veggies!

As for my garden, it is coming along. I need to repot everything, but I am excited about once again having fresh tomatoes right outside my door!

Do you plant anything in the spring/summer? Have any good gardening tips?

If you have not entered to win a case of Honest Tea, make sure to enter by end of day tomorrow!
