Hello from San Francisco and the Foodbuzz Festival! I have about 6 blog posts I need to write, but today is a busy day for Foodbuzz Featured Publishers, so I will keep it short with a review of Burger Bar.

Burger Bar probably wouldn’t be my first choice for a lunch destination, but the hubby likes a good burger, and I love Hubert Keller. Not to mention that the Burger Bar was within view of our hotel room at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco,  in the beautiful, Christmas-decorated Union Square Macy’s.

We were seated promptly for our 1:00 reservation and had a great view of Union Square and the Christmas tree setup, not to mention great food photography lighting!

Burger Bar

Since burgers and beer go so well together, I started with an Eel River Organic Porter. It was yummy!

For lunch, I had the veggie burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, jalapenos, and garlic aioli. Burger Bar’s veggie burger is no frozen patty out of a box. It is made of caramelized onions, lentils, mushrooms, peas, brown and white rice, potatoes, and pumpkin! I immediately wanted to recreate it at home.

On the side, we shared the jalapeno fried pickles. If fried pickles are on the menu, I have to have them!

My husband had the trio of different sliders. He liked them all, but gave a big thumbs up to the buffalo slider.

My burger was huge and very filling. All of the healthy ingredients, plus the toppings I chose, made for a tasty and substantial meal.

As you can see, I had to resort to eating with a fork because the burger was half the size of my face Smile

I barely ate half of it and was completely full. The food at Burger Bar is great, especially for you burger-lovers. The service,  however, was a little pushy, and spurred a conversation between my husband and me about our eating speeds and restaurant service. He is a super fast eater, and I am verrrrrrrry slow. Once our server saw his plate mostly empty, she returned repeatedly to try to take it, but I had not even made a dent in mine. I hated feeling rushed on vacation and probably ended up eating less than I would have if I felt more relaxed. I am sure my slow eating can be annoying, but I really like to enjoy eating and never end up way too stuffed because I am always conscious of how full I am. It works for me!

Overall, Burger Bar was worth a visit if you like burgers, a great view, and are a fan of celebrity chef Hubert Keller. Perhaps sitting at the bar might have resulted in a less fast paced meal, and I would probably go that route next time.

Are you a slow or fast eater? When you are eating out or shopping, do you prefer constant attention from staff, or like me, do you prefer to be left alone?

Beach Day

True bliss for both my husband and I always involves the ocean, and more specifically, an West coast ocean, either on the West coast of Ireland or the West coast of the US.

It was no surprise, then, that on a perfectly sunny, 80 degree November day on our Foodbuzz Festival trip to San Francisco, we chose to head away from the city and down along the coast for a day of wine tasting and beach lounging. I’ll have separate posts about our tasting at Bonny Doon Vineyards and the Santa Cruz Brewing Company and the various other delicious things we consumed on our journey West, but today’s post is all about beachy bliss.

Our trip South toward Bonny Doon included a dip in the Pacific Ocean, just my feet, or so I thought Smile It crept up quickly, and before I knew it, my pants were soaked to my knees. But I was on a beach on the Pacific Ocean!

Don’t the photos just speak for themselves? My shoulders dropped a few inches, I can breathe *almost* freely again, and my appetite is back! I credit the fresh sea air and sunshine Smile

After our tasting at Bonny Doon, we decided to head to the former hometown of my friend Chef Robin White to check out some of her old haunts. With the sun blazing in the sky, we wandered around Half Moon Bay checking out its quaint shops and beautiful streets. I fell instantly in love and could see why Robin missed it so much.

After drooling over all of the cheeses, meats, chocolate, spreads, and of course wine, we decided on a soft goat cheese, toasts, and a small bottle of Prosecco.

Ahhhhh. . .

Our beach picnic was one of the most perfect moments of my life. The crashing of the waves, the sun, delicious, dry Prosecco, and of course, the company of my wonderful husband. I love vacation!

Kelly over at She Wears a Red Sox Cap is doing something fun, 30 Days of Blogging, and while I may not blog every topic every day, I thought a lot of them were fun, and I also love hearing from readers.

So today, since I will be meeting so many people at Foodbuzz Festival, I thought I would share the thinking behind my blog name.

As you know, I started out as Travel Eat Love. The day I started writing my blog, I didn’t think much about it to be honest! I love to travel and eat, and to encompass all sorts of other fun things, I added the love.

Enter the movie, Eat, Pray, Love. As I was NOT a fan of the book, it became nightmarish every time I told someone my blog name! I changed the name, but not the URL, to Travel, Wine, and Dine, a name that is still kind of in limbo. I love to travel, wine, and dine, but travel has taken a back seat to other things in recent times, and not having a job will probably make that more so.

And so my blog name struggle continues!

If you are a blogger, how did you decide your blog name? If you aren’t a blogger, tell me a fun fact about yourself for this fun Friday! Smile

I have been dragging out the posts about our most recent trip to Sonoma and Napa for weeks. It was an amazing trip to one of my most favorite places, and it is a lot more interesting for me to write about than most other topics! Hopefully there will be another trip in my future, but until then, enjoy!

Following our visit to Ferrari-Carano, we headed down to St. Helena to meet a new friend for brunch at Gillwoods Cafe.  The drive was absolutely beautiful and made us want to stay forever. . .

We met Nicole, who works at V. Sattui and Castello di amorosa for a delicious brunch. Even though it was our first time meeting, she felt like an old friend, especially because she is from the Boston area!

I had incredible Huevos Rancheros topped with avocado, beans, sour cream, hot sauce, salsa, and cheese. Can I just say holy yum? 🙂 I also had a mimosa.

After we said our goodbyes, we headed down to Southern Sonoma Valley to check out a few more wineries before we had to head to San Francisco airport. We didn’t do a tasting, but we stopped by Imagery Estate Winery which was super crowded due to a barrel tasting event that was going on that weekend. We couldn’t get near the tasting bar! But I did get a good photo of this  massive paella that was cooking up at Imagery. It was a lovely winery, and it is definitely on my list for our next trip.

We decided to head a little further out to visit Gundlach Bundschu, one of the first wineries we ever visited in Sonoma and a winery whose wine club we belong to.

We started with a cool, refreshing 2008 Tempranillo Rose which tasted of strawberries and a bit of citrus. I love this wine, and I hope there is a bottle in our next wine club box 😉

Gundlach Bundschu offers a variety of really great wines. I especially enjoy their Syrah and Tempranillo.

We tasted through all of the available wines and took our last taste outside to sit by the lake on Gundlach Bundschu’s property.

It was an overcast afternoon, but it was warm and still and perfect for kicking back by the lake with a sip or two of wine.

After leaving Gundlach Bundschu, we headed into the town of Sonoma to get some food. Somehow we missed a lot of the lunch/brunch times, so we opted for Maya, a Mexican restaurant on Sonoma plaza. The hot chips and salsa provided when we arrived were delicious.

But the chile relleno was a little TOO cheesy and oily for my taste.

The “really good nachos” were really good, and our server brought me some of their homemade habanero hot sauce which was fantastically spicy.

We spent some time wandering around Sonoma, wondering what it might be like to live there, and taking notes on restaurants and wine tasting rooms we wanted to try on our next visit.

We concluded our time in Sonoma as we have on all of our trips, on the patio at Gloria Ferrer with a glass of Va de vi, a spectacular sparkling wine with a yeasty nose and a flavor of apples and figs  overlooking the vineyards below.

On the way back to San Francisco, we made a quick stop in Sausalito to walk along the water. I had never been to Sausalito, and I loved it. Next time I would definitely consider spending a night or two there. It is beautiful and quiet and check out those views across the bay!

We said our final goodbyes to a place we really love, and hopped on Virgin America for a short snooze on an overnight flight back to Boston.

See you again soon California!

In other news, Boston is positively BUZZING with Boston Marathon fever! The finish line is being constructed as are the stands, and Copley Square is a flurry of activity as Boston prepares for 25,000 runners and who knows how many spectators. I am still accepting donations for my marathon charity, The ALLY Foundation. If you would like to donate (and anything counts, even $1!) you can do so at http://firstgiving.com/meghanmalloyteamally.
