In the weeks since our King Arthur Flour baking classes, I have fancied myself quite the baker Smile making bread and rolls with ease. Since I made a pizza at King Arthur, I thought that making it at home would be a cinch. After the Boston Local Food Festival, we headed home exhausted and more than ready for a Saturday night at home for the first time in ages.

I found a recipe in the King Arthur Flour whole grains cookbook for a whole wheat herb pizza crust and got to work. Everything started out just fine. I followed the recipe and got my toppings together while the dough was rising.

And then it all went terribly wrong and it was all because this newbie baker does not own a rolling pin. A bottle of wine just doesn’t do the same thing. I rolled the dough as thin as I could get it, then pre-baked it, added the sauce and cheese, and returned it to the oven.

The dough, not rolled thinly enough, puffed up to the width of focaccia bread, and the mozzarella, too fresh maybe, turned the top of the pizza into a lake Sad smile

It was still edible, and my husband said that he liked the bread-like quality. I think he was just being nice. We still had a relaxing night in, just without the delicious pizza I had planned on.

I tried to write my response to the Marie Claire “Hunger Diaries” article last night but decided against posting. I don’t consider myself a healthy living blogger anymore for many reasons, just a food blogger who also happens to have a healthy, balanced life.  I’ll leave it at that 🙂 If you have any thoughts on the issue I am still interested in hearing them because the article and bloggers featured aside, I do think that readily available information via the internet comes with as many negatives as it does positives. It’s just what we do with them that matters.

So, I really do cook and eat at home. The proof is in the homemade mozzarella and roasted broccoli pizza that I whipped together Sunday night. A whole wheat Trader Joe’s pizza dough, marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella, and crispy crunchy roasted broccoli? Obviously a winning, healthy combination.

Roasted broccoli will be visiting traveleatlove.com often in the coming weeks.I am in a greens mood, and nothing brings out broccoli better than roasting it with some EVOO and crushed red pepper. Mmmm.

The pizza, however, disappointed royally. The mozzarella, as delicious as it was on its own, got really watery and pretty much ruined the finished product. 🙁 I picked off the toppings, but it was too late for the crust.

In happier news, I spent part of last night at the launch party for Basho Japanese Brasserie in the Fenway area of Boston. The wonderful PR ladies who have invited me to Morton’s events in the past invited me to this swanky event, and I was really excited to check it out. If you know me at all, you probably know that I don’t spend a ton of time near Fenway Park. This post explains why. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the area as a whole. My friend has a victory garden there, and I love Eastern Standard. A delicious new sushi restaurant could be just the thing to make me a Fenway believer. . .

Basho Boston Bamboo

A mini bamboo forest separates Basho’s long patio from the bustle of Boylston street, creating a quieter and more private outdoor dining space, something Boston can definitely always use.

The inside of Basho is beautiful, clean, spacious, and sleek. I love the clean lines and all of the space. The sushi bar is expansive, and it would be an ideal place for a romantic little date.

There were several sushi chefs hard at work, expertly rolling intricate (and I found later, delicious!) sushi rolls.

Friendly servers passed glasses of wine, champagne, sake, and specialty drinks like these refreshing cucumber martinis.

And then the food came out. I couldn’t stay for the entire event, but I did manage to sneak a deep fried shumai.

I don’t remember what this yummy roll was called, but it had asparagus, enough said. Yum.

Basho sushi summer roll

This was a summer roll with spicy tuna. It was so fresh and delicious, with a great kick to it. I didn’t even need soy sauce.

Unfortunately, since the sushi was passed, my photos are kind of blurry. But the food truly was beautiful, and the sushi chefs at Basho really put a lot of attention to detail into their work. Since I can eat my weight in sushi, I look forward to visiting again and ordering off the massive menu.

Edited to add: one side of Basho does have a row of plasma TV’s, perfect for those looking to watch a little Fenway Park action. BUT they kept the other side of the restaurant TV free, a sigh of relief for restaurant TV-haters like me! 🙂

Thanks to Marlo Marketing for inviting me to another great event!

More of my own cooking coming up this week, and hopefully it will be a little less of a disaster than the broccoli pizza!

What is the most fun thing you have planned for this week?

A couple of days ago I shared my current marathon training plan and got some really great feedback from all of you. Thanks! 🙂 Yesterday was one of the most important days in that plan, and it came along right when I needed it. After Tuesday’s elliptical workout, five sub eight minute miles, I wasn’t sore at all, but I was TIRED. Rest days are possibly the most important and influential part of my training plan. Even my walk into work  was overdoing it.

So last night when I came home, I did some deep stretching to help me loosen up for today’s workout, and then I got ready for a night of total vegging, starting with a bit of this:

It was our first time trying Harpoon chocolate stout, and it is definitely like dessert. For me, it was a perfect pre or post dinner drink, delicious, but it didn’t go well with food. The chocolate flavor is noticeable at first sip, and it moves from there into a nice, toasty, coffee like flavor. It is definitely a dark beer, and perfect for this time of year! Here’s what Harpoon says about the beer:

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color.

My favorite rest days include beer and pizza, so I borrowed from Nigella Express and made garlic naan pizza.

I started with two pieces of Trader Joe’s garlic naan.

I promise I don’t work for Trader Joe’s or get any compensation for writing about their products, but this is just another bit of inexpensive deliciousness that they offer. I love that they change their selection up; I get something different every time I go!

image

To make the pizza, I heated the naan in the oven at 400 for 4 minutes. Then I removed them and added the leftover homemade sauce, reheated from Tuesday’s dinner and Trader Joe’s ricotta.

I popped it all back into the oven for 4 minutes and voila, the pizzas were ready.

I served the pizzas with the most delicious and easy slaw ever.

It was just a bag of broccoli slaw with a cup of white vinegar, a sprinkle of sugar, crushed red pepper, and a few drops of habanero oil. I heated the vinegar and other ingredients until the sugar melted, then poured over the slaw. It was hot enough to get the flavors into the broccoli, but cool enough that it kept it crunchy. I ate about four cups of this stuff!

Dinner was ready in about 20 minutes, and I spent the rest of the night watching old episodes of Law & Order with my feet up. It was just what I needed, and made for a refreshed, energized workout today! Tonight I have a meeting regarding guest blogging for a new site and dinner at last at Craigie on Main a highly acclaimed Cambridge hot spot that I have not been to yet! Super excited, and I will be back with a review!
