Where did I leave off? Oh yes, hanging out with the lovely ladies at the Boston Sports Woman event. I would have loved to have stayed longer, but something miraculous happened. My husband made it out of work and back to Boston before the sun went down. The word epic is pretty overused in the blog community, but this occasion was EPIC. He is rarely home by 8:30 much less before 7, so we took advantage of the opportunity and had dinner at one of our favorites, Les Zygomates. (Other posts on Les Ziggy, as we like to call it, here and here). Every Friday night, Les Zygomates has live jazz, and it is the perfect accompaniment to a romantic meal.

Les Zygomates Jazz

We started with some crusty French bread and sweet, creamy butter. My husband is so cute, isn’t he?!

We wanted so many things on the menu that we opted to go for a bunch of appetizers. Before they came out, I sipped on a glass of Winzer Krems Grüner Veltliner a light, summery white wine that was easy to drink and went well with all of our food choices.

My only complaint for the evening was that everything came out at once. Food pacing is so important, and this was a big issue. But every morsel was delicious. This golden and red beet salad rested atop a very strong and flavorful goat cheese and a crunchy crostini. This goat cheese was unexpectedly stinky and delicious. The dressing and the juice from the beets soaked into the crostini making it perfectly soft and yummy.

The mussels at Les Zygomates are always incredible. The sauce that they come in incorporates white wine, Dijon mustard, tarragon, and shallots, and we always mop up every last drop with bread. The mussels, as usual, were plump and delicious, infused with the sauce and bursting with flavor.

Then there was this lobster and leek crepe with black truffle sauce. By the time we got to this it was no longer hot, but it was unspeakably decadent. Lobster and black truffle, you belong together.

And of course, no Travel Eat Love meal out is complete without a dozen or so East Coast oysters, obviously.

The food at Les Zygomates is always good.  They change the menu up every now and then but always offer a raw bar, so they are a good choice for us, people who always want oysters as an option. They have a great wine and beer list as well and weekly wine dinners. I am dying to try one of them out.

Do you have a restaurant that you always just know will be good?

Thanks for all of the blog birthday wishes! If you haven’t checked out the giveaway from yesterday’s post, definitely do!

This past weekend, I got to hit up Whole Foods Market which is a treat since it isn’t super convenient to get to from my house. After my lunch with the CE-Yo, I was in the mood for lots of organics.   In addition to veggies and fruits, I bought some Honest Tea Kombucha (my first!). I also got some Siggi’s yogurt, Maca powder, and Wellfleet oysters for a nice summer dinner.

We started with a major salad. Yellow beets, beet tops, roasted broccoli, and kale massaged with olive oil and lemon juice. Massaged kale is seriously amazing.

It’s definitely kind of fun to just get your hands in there and really rub the kale with lemon juice and oil.  Then I topped it with crushed red pepper and garlic powder.

Since we were having a light summer meal, the salad was huge and full of volume.

As a special treat, we had some fresh, briny Wellfleet oysters. Served with a simple red wine vinegar and black pepper mignonette, these oysters just said summer.

Our final course was a dessert soup. Originally planned as a soup course, this dish turned out yummy but definitely sweet enough to serve as a light dessert.

I started by macerating several cups of chopped strawberries in Travessia Vidal Blanc and chopped mint. I actually refrigerated this mixture overnight, and the flavors came together very nicely.

I had a fun little photo shoot 🙂

I added the strawberries, mint, and wine to the blender with about another cup of Vidal Blanc and a half cup of Greek yogurt. I pureed it until smooth and topped with more mint.

The soup chilled for about an hour before we ate it. It was cool, smooth, and sweet, the perfect ending to a summer meal. Next time I would think of adding ripe honeydew to this as well and maybe leaving some chopped fruit to the side to stir in at the last minute to mix up the texture a little.

I think you will be seeing many cold summer soups this summer! Gazpacho, cold beet soup, and more fruit soups. . . delicious and healthy and perfect for those nights you don’t want to heat up the kitchen!

I still need a Friday Foodie Feature for this Friday, so please let me know if you are interested!

It’s a scorcher out there! Of course I chose yesterday, in all of its 88 degree glory, to do my first outdoor run since the Boston Marathon. I have been focusing on mostly strength workouts and a few spinning classes, but the urge to run struck me and I went with it. It was sooo not pleasant! I didn’t mind the heat at all. In fact it felt really good to have the blood coursing through my veins again and to get a good sweaty workout in. But the air was awful! It felt so smoggy, and there were big, fluffy bits of pollen everywhere. Gotta get those workouts in to get ready for the beach, though, right! Have you started to do anything different to get in shape for summer? I am considering Healthworks’ Beach Body Bootcamp. . .

Now on to the food part of this post 🙂

I love summer salads, corn on the cob, veggie burgers, and fresh fruit, but I also find plenty of time to eat some not-so-healthy summer favorites. This past weekend at the Coastal Wine Trail kickoff (Part 1 & Part 2), it really felt like the start of summer, and we certainly kicked the season off right.

We started at the Box Lunch. The Box Lunch is a summer tradition, and it is always the first place we stop in Provincetown. And I always get the same thing, a whole wheat rollwich with swiss and provolone, tomatoes, sprouts, lettuce, avocado, onion, and hot peppers.  Eaten on a blanket on the beach, Box Lunch might just be one of my favorite summer lunches 🙂

Another thing that I ate plenty of on Sunday were raw oysters. Some people hate them, but I totally crave oysters. Add some spicy cocktail sauce and lemon or a shallot mignonette, and I could easily eat a couple dozen of these!

On our way home from the wine festival, we stopped at Moby Dick’s in Wellfleet, MA.

And a whole belly fried clam plate. I love my fried seafood! If the batter is light, and the seafood is fresh, it is just perfect. Paired with tartar sauce and crispy fries, this meal tastes like summer. I also love fried scallops, oysters, and shrimp, for the record.

Checkered tablecloths and a pretty view made it taste even better. As we started driving off of the Cape, I had an urge for something sweet. Enter another summer favorite and a childhood tradition. Even though I grew up in NJ, we spent time many summers in Centerville, MA, and we always went to Four Seas Ice Cream. Four Seas is an old style ice cream shop, and they serve up homemade ice cream in many scrumptious flavors.

Four Seas has a lot of history as one of America’s most famous families frequent it every summer. We saw members of the Kennedy clan a few times over the years, stopping in for ice cream from their nearby Hyannisport compound.

Being at Four Seas always brings back memories and made me a little emotional this time. I had what I have always had, banana ice cream with hot fudge, almonds, and whipped cream. I love all of the contrast of this dish, the homemade hot fudge, cold ice cream, crunchy almonds. It is the perfect summer dessert. And of course it tastes better when you had sand on your feet and a little bit of a sunburn from being out all day 🙂 It truly is like being a kid again.

Now you tell me, what is your favorite summer treat?

If you have a second, this week I have guest posts on both of these sites, one on Gundlach Bundschu Tempranillo and the other on Travessia Pinot Grigio plus a yummy summer salad:
