The third time was the charm. We had reservations to the highly-anticipated Island Creek Oyster Bar last Saturday and Sunday, and due to my illness cancelled both. Even though I wasn’t feeling fabulous on my last day of work, after a week stuck at home, I wanted to go out, and it had to be Island Creek Oyster Bar.

If you have been reading this blog for some time, you have probably seen plate after plate of raw oysters. We love them, especially when they are of the Island Creek or Wellfleet varieties. . . local IS best!

I arrived at Island Creek Oyster Bar (menu here), which is at 500 Commonwealth Ave, earlier than my husband, lugging multiple bags of wine club wine, and a little frazzled. The second I walked in, I was welcomed, and my bags were magically removed from my tired shoulders and tucked away in the coat check. Thank you.

I sat at the beautiful, beautiful bar for awhile while I waited, sipping Prosecco and just looking around. You have to see it for yourself. Made of some sort of cool black stone, the bar stretches for most of the length of the room and is the perfect place for a few (dozen) oysters and drinks. It was full to capacity but still spacious which made it comfortable for me sitting alone or for groups or couples sitting together. Two thumbs up for not jamming the bar with stools.

Due to some horrendous traffic, my poor, tired husband was pretty late for our reservation, but the very friendly hostesses seated me at our table anyway when I gave up my bar seat for two people who wanted to sit together. I love that they didn’t give me an attitude about having my entire party there. Likewise, our server made me feel completely at home and served me a glass of Aubry Brut Champagne while I waited.

As I sat there, I got a chance to check out the décor, which is made up of muted greys, seats with wooden slats on the back, and walls covered in cages filled with oyster shells. It offers a cross between urban and beachy and nautical without being cheesy or a theme-y.

The Aubry Brut was the perfect choice for celebrating International Champagne Day. It had a nice gold hue and flavors of citrus and toast. Once my husband arrived, it was also the perfect choice for pairing with oysters.

We had a dozen: 4 Island Creek, 4 Moon Shoal from Barnstable, MA, and 4 Coupe Des Anges from Prince Edward Island. I watched Anne of Green Gables while I was sick; I had to have PEI oysters!

Other than one of the PEI oysters tasting really ick, these were delicious. The Island Creeks were my favorite, but I would eat oysters from all of these locations again.

We also indulged in a few hot dishes: A meaty crab cake with mustard sauce and apples, really excellent crab meat, slightly too salty, but otherwise really delicious.

These clams were perfectly cooked in a flavorful tomato broth that I could have easily eaten as a soup. I proclaimed the grilled bread perfection.

My favorite dish of the night, the sauce was tangy, the shrimp, again, perfectly cooked, and the grits were soft, smooth, creamy comfort. I will return again and again just for this.

With all of these delights from the sea, we were stuffed. Dessert looked so good, house-made cider donuts with caramel and cider, but we couldn’t eat another bite.

With Jeremy Sewall of Lineage at the helm and the focus on great local seafood, I had a feeling I would love Island Creek Oyster Bar, but it exceeded all of my expectations. They make everything in house, have a fun wine and beer list, and despite being in the busy Kenmore Square, maintain a laid back, comfortable feel.

The service was absolutely fantastic, from the second I arrived, all the way until we walked out the door. Everyone was friendly and accommodating without being overly so. I am excited to make this a regular in our restaurant rotation.

I love my Boston blogger friends. There’s nothing quite like a night out eating and drinking with them, and when you add in a delicious, hospitable North End restaurant like Villa Francesca, you have the best Monday night ever.

I left work on a very humid, cloudy evening and wandered over to the North End in what ended up being our first rainy evening in quite awhile. As a result, I was early for the event, just to get out of the rain. I ran into Alicia and Michelle at the bar which was a perfect way to kick off the night.

Kristen soon came up to meet us, and as organizer of the event, she was a fantastic hostess. The downstairs setup was pretty sweet with oysters and Prosecco waiting for us.  Two of my favorite things!

I ate several deliciously briny oysters washed down by a glass and a half of Prosecco, all while checking out Villa Francesca’s beautiful wine cellar. It’s quite wonderful to find such a wine cellar in Boston. . . it looks like it should be in a Tuscan villa.

After mingling with some of my favorite bloggies like Katie, Megan, Daisy, Lara, Renee, and Twitter friend Justin, we sat down for a dinner of never ending delicious food and wine.

I had started upstairs with a Nero D’avola and kept sipping that downstairs while also trying a sample of the white which was a pale in color, grapefruit-y delight whose name I can’t remember.

We all shared a family style antipasto, and the spicy salami was the perfect counterpart for salty cheese and fresh tomatoes and basil. The vegetarian in me looks away when antipasto is served. . .;)

I thought we were all set with appetizers when we were EACH served this Fettucine con Gamberi, homemade pasta with shrimp in a light, flavorful tomato cream sauce. I could have been done eating here, satisfied with delicious homemade pasta. . .

But there was more! Sole served with some of the best potatoes and escarole I have ever eaten. Everything tasted so delicious and delicately flavored. I was stuffed by the time my plate was taken away. . .

But homemade, filled to order cannolis were next. And who am I to say no to a cannoli? Especially one made to order. I had mine with ricotta, chocolate chips, and powdered sugar, filled by the owner of Villa Francesca himself.

I loved meeting Bill, Villa Francesca’s owner, and hearing about the restaurant’s quality, homemade ingredients. Dining in the North End can be overwhelming with so many choices, so being able to try out a new restaurant at last night’s event was pretty amazing. I for one can not wait to explore their wine cellar more and to eat their food again. It was a delicious evening that I was privileged to be part of.

My Sunday was just what I needed, time with my family. My brother in law is taking a professional development course at MIT this week, so my sister, 3 year old niece, and niece or nephew to be 🙂 came along to hang out with me.

After a loooong morning of cleaning, trying to fix my Windows Live Writer, and blogging, I met them at their hotel, and we went for a walk down by the waterfront.

It actually felt lovely and cool and even rained a bit. My family is from NJ where it has been in the high 90’s and 100’s for all of July, and they loved the break.

Mid-summer flowers were all along the path, and my niece kept stopping to smell them. I would love to post photos of my nieces and nephews, but I feel like the blog is just too public for the little ones. Trust me when I say they are all cute 🙂

Dinner was laid back, New England-style food at The Ledge in Dorchester. I had heard great things about their patio, and it did not disappoint. It is beautifully done with great stone benches, lots of flowers, and tons of space. It is the best outdoor dining space I have seen in Boston because it is private and completely removed from the street. They also have an outside bar 😉

I started with a Sea Dog Blueberry with a few juicy blueberries floating at the top.

For dinner, I started with the wedge salad, crisp iceberg lettuce, blue cheese, pickled onions, bacon, eggs, and grape tomatoes. I shared it with the table. It was enormous!

I shared some Island Creek and Point Judith oysters with the hubs.

And then had some mussels in a flavorful broth chock full of fennel, carrots, grape tomatoes, and garlic with a little grilled bread.

We also shared The Ledge’s ooey-gooey blue cheese tater tots, literally giant potato nuggets filled with melted blue cheese. Amazing.

The adults were full after dinner, but a certain 3 year old asked for strawberry ice cream with sprinkles, and we obliged. We stopped at the nearby Ice Creamsmith, a Dorchester favorite and some of the best homemade ice cream in the area. I stole a bite of the delicious, berry filled creaminess, and it definitely made me wish I had saved some room!

Being with my family is definitely nice, especially in my hometown. Today I am off work to spend the day with my sister and niece at a farm in Central MA. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a day right now.
