My wanderlust is always present, but little getaways do wonders to quell its nagging voice that tells me to keep adventuring. This past weekend we got to experience a long-awaited getaway to Miami, with a stay at the Sonesta Coconut Grove in Miami. In the interest of full disclosure, I work for Sonesta Hotels, so I am able to travel and get great rates at hotels in the collection. It’s definitely a huge perk of working in hotels!

Our winter-weary souls were thrilled to board a plane from Boston to Miami, but the flight definitely reminded me of one of my least favorite parts of travel, getting there. After only flying JetBlue and Virgin America on domestic trips for years, we flew American to Miami, and it felt like it was around 1995, as far as service and amenities went. The flight had no wine (what?!) and no TVs on the backs of chairs. To top it off, we had a snorer and a kicker behind us. And man, those seats are tiny. We literally ran off of the plane to our rental car, and once at the Sonesta, our holiday officially began.

For months I had been dreaming of sitting by the hotel’s 8th floor pool, overlooking the harbor, drenched in sun. We booked the trip back in September, knowing we would want to leave snowy Massachusetts for a little tropical r & r.  The Sonesta did not disappoint. The atmosphere at the pool is beautiful and incredibly relaxing. Food and drink service is available poolside, as are towels and refreshing cups of ice water. It is pretty much the perfect spot, and we spent a good deal of our time at the pool.

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut GroveOur room was a cityview room, but all we had to do was look right for ocean views. We spent a lot of time on our balcony, sipping wine we picked up at the nearby Fresh Market, a store I am obsessed with. When we travel, I always like to visit local grocery stores for snacks and drinks; it is an easy way to save money and to have a better selection.

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut GroveThe Sonesta’s Coconut Grove location was ideal for our purpose, which was relaxing and soaking up sunshine. Coconut Grove is full of cute restaurants and shops, with lots of quaint streets to wander and a gorgeous waterfront. It is not the party atmosphere of South Beach and other parts of Miami, but for us that was perfect. Good food, good drinks, and a slower pace in a new-to-us place made for the perfect long weekend. We might just make this an annual trip.

Stay tuned for more on Coconut Grove restaurants and sites from our trip!

And, if you are in the path of today’s snow, stay warm and safe! (Is winter over yet?!)

Massachusetts can be a magical place to live and vacation. From the Berkshires to Provincetown, our beautiful Commonwealth has so much to offer and a season for every taste. Cape Cod is one of those places that makes it so special. Gray shingled houses, hydrangeas, endless coastline and sparkling blue sea. My love affair with the Cape began long ago when I vacationed there as a child, and I still seek out every possible opportunity to visit. This past weekend we headed across the Sagamore Bridge and along the Cape to Chatham, where we celebrated our favorite newlyweds at Chatham Bars Inn.

Chatham Bars Inn

Named as one of the leading hotels in the world, Chatham Bars Inn is an expansive property comprised of cottages and a main building, along with a golf course, beach, several restaurants, and spa. Its views are unparalleled; it is the epitome of Cape Cod luxury. The rooms are simply decorated with a beach house theme, clean, comfortable, and offering luxurious little touches like Nespresso machines and gas fireplaces.  Restaurants in the main building, including Stars and The Veranda offer stunning views of the sea, a perfect place for a glass of wine.

Our friends happened to be having their mini moon in one of the cottages as Chatham Bars Inn, and we enjoyed toasting with bubbles and their delicious handcrafted cocktails while taking in views of the harbor and splashing seals. We spent a lot of time on their balcony, for very good reason.

We also had the fantastic treat of checking out the wine cellar at Chatham Bars Inn’s main building. Their cellar is beautiful, and I could have browsed all day. Guests can plan ahead for wine tastings in this lovely space; I already may have hinted at 35th birthday plans.

The variety of restaurants at Chatham Bars Inn makes for some nice choices throughout the day. Once we had enough of the cool breezes outside, we huddled on cozy couches for drinks and a snack, this gorgeous, smoky, sweet slab of candied bacon.

Chatham Cape CodIn addition to its spectacular seaside location, Chatham Bars Inn is also within walking distance to the town of Chatham, and we did a little bit of exploring. Autumn in New England is certainly a special time that people travel the world over to experience. Chatham was dressed in its seasonal finest, and we were feeling pretty lucky to be there.

A long day outside led us to a late dinner out at the Impudent Oyster, a restaurant I would highly recommend. We had the most delightful server and lots of great food like mussels, sizzling garlic shrimp, dumplings, salads, soup and pasta dishes. The menu is extensive, and from what we ordered, delicious. It was perfect to be able to walk to our home for the night along a marshy, moonlit road, listening to frogs and crickets sing their night songs.

Once we retreated to our room, we loved just cozying up in its simple comforts. The beach house decor is inspiring; we are in the process of planning some redecorating, and I would love a serene, beach cottage like home. Instead of watching TV, we listened to classical music and watched the fireplace, feeling a million miles away from the city.

A gorgeous morning, croissants and coffee at Chatham Cookware, and a seal-filled walk on the beach rounded out our perfect little Chatham getaway. It was hard to hop back into the car to sit in bridge traffic, but we both felt rejuvenated and blessed for the wonderful time we had with great friends in a most perfect place.

Boston’s travel and tourism scene is really booming these days. Business and leisure travelers alike are visiting the city, and who can blame them? We’ve got history, architecture, beautiful green space, a bustling waterfront, and a culinary scene that gets better every single day. Last week I had the opportunity to check out a new hotel property in the South End, Chandler Studios. Life has been more on-the-go than usual lately, so I only had a few minutes to pop in and take a tour. Having walked by Chandler Studios many times, I was very curious to see what was inside, and I was definitely not disappointed. Chandler Studios Chandler Studios offers apartment-like accommodations. Check in is either virtual or at sister property Chandler Inn so guests really can feel like residents if they choose, or they can pop across the street if they need assistance from a staff member. It’s the best of both worlds. If it’s privacy and chic city rooms you’re looking for, Chandler Studios is definitely it. They offer 11 efficiency studios and a one bedroom suite, which is kind of bigger than our condo. I offered to live there, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s going to happen. Chandler Studios Color scheme and décor at Chandler Studios are clean and inviting, and the rooms were all very quiet, despite being in the busy South End. Art on the walls is old Boston, images of what things looked like pre-Big Dig, and while that industrial, above-ground road may not have a great look for the city, it translates fabulously into art.
