It’s Boston Marathon weekend! Today I plan on going to the marathon expo to pick up my bib number and race packet, tomorrow I am heading to Wine Riot and a carb filled dinner at Prezza, and Sunday my marathon charity, The ALLY Foundation, is having a pasta party for runners. I am excited and nervous! Really nervous! I will be posting all weekend, all about the Wine Riot, dinner, the pasta party, the marathon expo, and the MARATHON, so please check back often. Your support has been so crucial to this whole training period, and I will definitely use it as motivation this weekend!

Now to the Friday Foodie Feature! Today we have Nicole from the wonderful Cooking with Coley. Nicole’s blog makes you feel like you are a guest in her kitchen, and it features lots of delicious recipes and really great photos. We share a love of Google Analytics 🙂 as I too am a little obsessed with my (meager!) traffic. I am really looking forward to following what Nicole cooks next!

Cooking with Coley

How long have you been blogging?
I’m still a newbie to the blogging thing, but I’m no newbie to the blogosphere.  With a PR background, I spend quite a bit of time exploring the Web and even pitching bloggers, so it’s been really exciting for me to be on the other side. www.cookingwithcoley.com was just launched in January 2010.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?
There are so many things I love about blogging – the excitement of capturing a new dish on camera, the anticipation of what responses and comments I’ll receive from my readers and friends and the sheer pleasure it brings me as I multitask on my couch while watching TV.
I should also mention that I love Google Analytics. Seriously.  Although it might sound weird, every day the first thing I do when I log onto my computer is check my analytics (go ahead, you can laugh at me).  While the results are usually nothing to boast about, I get excited to see the traffic numbers.  Yes, I’m that lame.
Least ?
Right now there’s nothing that comes to mind!

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
There’s no question about this one – it was my first recipe post ever on my signature dish – Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps.  Friends and family had so often asked me to give them recipes (especially this one), so for months and months I kept saying I was going to create a recipe blog for them pull my recipes from.  The day I finally wrote and posted my first recipe gave me such a rush – it was a combination of exhilaration and fulfillment.  I had rediscovered my love for writing and brought my passion for cooking to life.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
Probably with 10,000 unique monthly visitors, a dozen major advertisers and exploding with content.  OK, I am being facetious.  If I have 1000 monthly visitors, I think I’ll be ecstatic!  I honestly don’t know where this is going, but I’m enjoying every bit of it along the way and am excited to see where this journey takes me.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
It’s more of a fun fact… www.cookingwithcoley.com was originally launched as NicForMasterChef.com.  Sounds like a weird name, right?  Well, it’s sort of a fun story.  On Sunday, January 10, 2010, I tried out at a Master Chef casting audition in Newton along with 200 other Bostonians (Master Chef is a new show coming to Fox about amateur chefs). I had to plate my signature dish (lettuce wraps) and serve it to the judges. From there I was asked back with about 20 other people to round two where I did an on-camera interview for nearly 30 minutes, where I then qualified for round three – part of the top 10 in Boston!

As part of the third round, I had a few days to pull together raw footage that captured me and my life – friends, family, my kitchen and of course me cooking!  To supplement my footage, and help me stand out, I created the blog NicForMasterChef in hopes it would show the judges and producers that I should be on the show and have what it takes.

Unfortunately, I never ended up making it on the show (I guess reality TV wasn’t my calling!), but I am so appreciative and thankful for what I took away from the experience.  By creating the blog, I rediscovered my interest in writing and found a new outlet to pursue that passion.  At the same time, I was able to couple it with my growing fondness of food and cooking… and from there Cooking with Coley was born.

Thanks so much, Nicole!

The weekend is here! Well almost. . . only a few hours until we wrap up another work week. What are you doing this weekend? Tonight I am heading to a wine tasting at Morton’s which I am very excited about. Tomorrow I am going to Down 2 Earth, Boston’s Sustainable Living Expo, and Sunday I will reunite with my puppy dog friends at the MSPCA. Due to training and travel, I haven’t been to the MSPCA to volunteer in a few weeks, and I totally miss dog walking!

Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is no stranger to Travel Eat Love readers. Kelly from She Wears a Red Sox Cap has guest posted about her New Zealand adventures (here & here) and shares my love of food, fitness, wine, travel, and New England. I read her blog every single day, and I have had fun following her wedding planning. Probably more fun than she has haha 🙂

Take it away Kelly!

How long have you been blogging?
My one year blog anniversary will be April 22nd, so almost a year. I also had a really ridiculous blog back in college that was basically a dialog between me and some of my friends.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least Favorite?
I think my #1 favorite thing about blogging is how much it has expanded my horizons. I have tried so many different foods, recipes, restaurants, exercises, etc because I knew it would make “good blogging material,” but really it just makes really good experiences that I am so happy to have had. I’m a bit of a “play it safe” person, so it’s nice to have that extra push to try new things and always challenge myself. It has also expanded my horizons about people. I have made so many great blogging friends and it’s so fun and interesting having friends from all over the world. For a whole list of things I love about blogging, check here:

My least favorite thing about it is when I’m a restaurant and someone wants to know (usually friends of friends or something) why I am taking pictures of my food and why I blog etc. I know I should just answer the questions up front, but I always get a little embarrassed about it. It always seems to make more sense to people once they read my blog, but when they haven’t yet I always get that “why would you EVER do that” vibe from them.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
All of my posts have been fun to write, but probably my favorite was from my recap of my spring triathlon last summer. The triathlon is sort of why I started the blog in the first place and I had talked a lot about training, and a knee injury I suffered (and still suffer, boo) as a result of training, so it was nice to show the hard work had paid off.

Another fun post I did with Eric on cheating in relationships. Glamour Magazine did an article on what they think is cheating, vs. what is not cheating. Eric and I discussed each one and I posted about our opinions. Eric’s responses just made me laugh, so I laughed the whole time I wrote the post 🙂

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
Truthfully, I’m not sure. Most obviously, I’d love for my blog to be better, and to have a lot more readers. But I haven’t 100 percent worked out exactly how I am going to accomplish that and what changes it will mean for my blog. I think that is okay though. If you had asked me where my blog would be today one year ago, I would’ve had no clue either- and I’m so happy with how far it has come.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
I am so happy that I ventured into the blog world about a year ago. Most days I look forward to coming home from work so I can write my blog post (and eat my ice cream in front of the tv haha). I think the number 1 way that I keep blogging so positive for me is to not take myself too seriously. I know that if I don’t post one day, my readers will survive 🙂 This attitude has helped keep blogging fun and not make it seem like another item on my already too long to-do list.

It’s the weekend! And a long (for me) holiday weekend with my family at that! The weather has turned for the better, I have a few days off, its been a week of fabulous eats. What could be better? Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is Seth from MysteryMeet.org, Boston Foodies Discovering New Restaurants. I am excited to feature a site that is not a food blog both to mix things up a little bit and also because I am very interested in the concept of MysteryMeet.org.

What is MysteryMeet.org?
It’s a site for Boston foodies that want to discover new restaurants.  On the second Tuesday of every month, we get together at a new dining establishment, where we’ve arranged an exclusive pre-fixe menu.  We invite you to the Mystery Meets however you want – by email, text message, Facebook or Twitter – but there’s a catch: we only give you 24 hours advance notice!  So if you’re not in the know, you miss out!  It’s a great way for foodies to discover new restaurants, and for new restaurants to get the word out.

Is MysteryMeet.org a food blog?
It’s not.  There are so many great food blogs out there – from Boston Restaurant Talk to Grub Street to the Boston Foodie – that I decided I’d rather share what they do than try to reproduce it.  So I have a list of great Boston food blogs on MysteryMeet and I’m constantly passing along their posts thru Twitter and on our Facebook Page  .  But we’re not a blog; we’re not a dating site; we’re not a networking site.  We’re really just about getting together to try new restaurants.

When will you host your first Mystery Meet?
We’re aiming to host our first Mystery Meet in May.  We’re always looking for new restaurants at which host them, so feel free to send us suggestions!

How did you get involved in restaurant events?
I was producing a lot of hospitality events in Providence, including bartending competitions and the New England Nightlcub and Bar Expo    at the Twin River Casino.  Last summer, my girlfriend and I produced the Rhode Island World of Flavors  , with almost 30 restaurants competing for a $15,000 prize package.  She now works in admissions at Le Cordon Bleu in Kendall Square, and I do social media in Burlington for a living.  When we moved up here, I wanted to continue working with restaurants, so I launched MysteryMeet.org as a side project.

Where do you see MysteryMeet.org in a year?
Hopefully, we’ll have a solid foodie following that will be joining us once a month.  We are also looking for ways to tie a charity in to what we do, so I hope we find a way to eat for a good cause.

Thank you, Seth, for helping all of us, including me, understand the concept behind MysteryMeet.org. I can not wait to hear about and hopefully attend the first event, and I would definitely like to write a follow up post sometime after the first Mystery Meet.

This post serves as a great reminder that you don’t have to be a blogger to be a featured foodie! Have an idea or foodie life you want to share? Let me know at traveleatlove@gmail.com
