It’s already approaching hump day everyone! AND the sun came out in Boston, turning a gloomy, humid, chilly morning into a gorgeous evening with perfect blue skies. The hub and I decided to go to Myers + Chang’s date night, and I will post some photos of that later. We then walked the 2+ miles home in this glorious weather, and I am writing out on our deck. I refuse to go inside when it is nice out! As promised, I have written a little bit about one of the best meals I have had in a VERY long time.  I am lucky to have the opportunity to eat a lot of great things, but this meal stands out to me big time.

This past winter I had to go to Charleston, SC for a work meeting. Knowing nothing about Charleston, I was pleasantly surprised when I left frigid Boston and arrived in this balmy, palm tree lined city. While I did have to work the large majority of the time, I was happy to have a free evening off for a ghost tour and shopping (hell-o Charleston! The shopping was incredible!) with some co-workers and even happier to find out that Charleston is a real foodie city!

One of the evenings I was taken to High Cotton Maverick Grill. The first thing that I noticed was the stunning, breezy interior. Massive blade fans, exposed brick, beautiful chandeliers, and the large, beautifully set table by the window set an immediate mood of relaxation and made me feel like I was in a totally different world.

One of my dining companions ordered the Vicolo Pinot Grigio for us, a delicious wine (classic pale straw color with a delicate bouquet, crisp and refreshing) that paired perfectly with the best fried oysters ever. The oysters. . . plump, briny, juicy, with a light buttermilk batter. They came with a sauce, but honestly I didn’t want to mask the oysters’ flavor so I don’t think I tried it.

Our group also ordered the High Cotton charcuterie plate. Since I’m not big on meat, I just ate some of the pickles and grilled bread that accompanied the plate. I LOVE pickles, and these did not disappoint.

For my entrée, I decided to go local and try the Certified Wild American Shrimp and Grits
(Lowcountry spice, scallions, tomatoes, corn, sweet shrimp broth) and a side order of fried green tomatoes to share with a colleague.

I have had grits before. My nana lived in NC for awhile and made us breakfast grits which were good, but well, gritty. These grits were creamy and luscious, absolutely divine. I have never eaten anything like them, but I certainly hope that I will again. The shrimp were sweet and fresh, and the spices gave it a little bit of a kick. The fried green tomatoes were my first. . . and oh my. They were piping hot, crispy on the outside, juicy and hot on the inside, and topped with an onion relish that added a vinegary zing that cut through the crispy battered tomatoes and really brought everything to life.

I didn’t have room for dessert and instead had a small glass of a German dessert wine. I left so satisfied and returned to the Northeast looking to find some Southern cooking that met the standards of High Cotton. Still looking, and hoping to make another trip back to Charleston soon now that I know more about their restaurants, shopping, and Southern hospitality.

North Truro bay beach

North Truro bay beach

Happy Sunday everyone! I started this post on the fast ferry from Provincetown to Boston after my annual weekend away with my college roommates. So much fun! Saturday was absolutely perfect beach weather, and we hit the sand as soon as we arrived on the Cape, just after getting lunch at the delicious Box Lunch and knocking back a few Wellfleet oysters at the Lobster Pot. For my lunch, I got an organic veggie rollup with lettuce, tomato, avocado, hot peppers, onions, and blue cheese crumbles. It was so yum, and eating on the beach always makes food taste better!

After the beach we did all of our grocery shopping. While I have to head back to the grind tomorrow, a few of my friends are staying the week. Lucky! We stocked up for the week, headed to buy our lobsters for our lobster dinner, and then arrived at the lovely little cottage that we stay at every year, right on the bay in North Truro, a 5 minute drive from Provincetown. To start the evening off and to rehydrate after a long day on the beach, I made a few Pom Wonderful mocktails with Pom, seltzer, lots of ice, and lime. I had a few of these and then had some water mixed with this Bolthouse Farms carrot juice.

It was very carrot-y. I had to really dilute it and was then able to drink it. I am sure my body thanks me, but it wasn’t easy to get down! After relaxing around the cottage and taking a walk on the beach, we cracked open a bottle of Sakonnet Vineyards’ champagne that I picked up last week at the Coastal Wine Trail kickoff. It was the perfect way to kick off the evening, bubbly, slightly sweet, and delicious. We also had some lovely cambazola cheese and a garlic herb cheese spread on crackers.

Dinner was steamed lobsters and corn on the cob, perfect summer food. With dinner we had some of the Sakonnet Vidal Blanc, Sakonnet’s signature wine and a refreshing, light, peachy drink that went very well with the food and just felt like summer in my mouth. When we were in college we started the tradition of making great, multi course dinners together rather than buying Christmas or birthday gifts, and as a result we have all become major foodies and really interested in wine. Some of my favorite memories are of cooking and eating with the girls! It was SO nice to be around the table again.

The night progressed into Provincetown where there might have been some karaoke and dancing, a few more drinks, and a very late night 🙂

I had a great weekend, but unfortunately I do not feel rested or ready to face another busy week. I am off to watch Milk with the hubby and to get myself ready for some long work hours. Some thoughts on ideas for upcoming posts:

Before I dive into my local favorite review, I just wanted to share that I used frozen spinach- about half of a bag – in my Green Monster this morning. I threw it in frozen, but I may thaw the rest out tonight and quickly steam it in the morning. Anyway, it was a stellar GM, VERY green, and despite the very long day I am having, I feel great. I have some Amazing Grass samples on the way, so check in later this week or early next for a review on those!

Local favorite: Joanne Chang

About: http://www.flourbakery.com/staff.php?pid=703  (of note, she ran every Boston Marathon from 1991-2006!! My 3 marathons pale in comparison. I guess I can’t complain that I don’t have time to run!)

I first discovered the incredible work of Joanne Chang about a year and a half ago while working in Boston’s Seaport District right next to her Flour Bakery. Having just changed jobs, I was on a tight budget and held off on visiting Flour, despite the incredible smells emanating from it, until I started training for the Boston Marathon.

Those who know me well know that I am a hobbit. I can eat 10 small meals a day when I’m not working out a lot, and when I am training for a marathon, my food intake becomes mildly ridiculous. Flour Bakery became my treat of the week. While Ms. Chang is famous for her sticky buns, and they are gooooood, my favorites are Flour’s sugar brioche, banana chocolate bread pudding, and Scharffenberger chocolate cookies. With a café au lait,  one of these treats became a weekly Friday ritual. . . until my mileage increased and I decided that banana chocolate bread pudding was a suitable lunch item because it contained fruit. I never went for baked goods more than twice a week, but I soon discovered Flour’s melty grilled sandwiches, homemade soups, and homemade raspberry seltzer which, for a bubbly fiend like me, is about the best thing you can come across.

Just for the sake of research, I stopped by Flour’s South End location on my walk home today and picked up this gorgeous chocolate cupcake, which I guarded with my life on the rest of my walk home. I also ordered a deliciously refreshing, slightly spicy ginger lemonade which reminded me of the beloved Trader Joe’s lemon ginger tea that seems to no longer exist. . .

cupcake mmm

The cupcake will be a special hump-day treat for the hub and I later this evening, but without even taking a bite, I know it will be incredible.

Ms. Chang’s other well known establishment in Boston is Myers + Chang, a funky diner-like space that offers fresh food full of a variety of amazing Asian flavors. My first trip to M + C did not go well, and I made a point of Yelping about it. To my absolute surprise, I received a personal email from Ms. Chang, apologizing, and asking us to give it another try.

I am glad I did. My husband and I have been to Myers + Chang at least ten times, and to me Myers + Chang = Saturday lunch. We have only tried a few things on the menu, and I can’t seem to change it up because I CRAVE the grilled homemade 5-spice tofu banh mi and the Thai ginger chicken salad. These flavors are alive, fresh, crisp while also being filling and leaving you with a little pep in your step. I always feel good after eating here, and after my first experience have been delighted by the attentive and pleasant staff. They offer date night specials from Sunday-Tuesday with a specially priced menu – $40/couple plus $25 bottles of wine! It’s not often we drag ourselves out on a weeknight, but this will be worth it!

Boston Center for Adult Education is offering a class with Ms. Chang (!!) later this summer, and I am hoping to be in attendance to meet this brilliant baker, businesswoman, and fellow Boston Marathoner!

If you live in Boston or are just visiting, don’t miss Flour Bakery (Washington St. in the South End or Farnsworth St. in the Seaport) and Myers + Chang (1145 Washington St. South End, Boston).
