Another rainy day in Boston. . .

I decided to skip my real workout today, feeling like my 6 mile round trip commute is enough exercise for a day like today. Hopefully this will give me the energy I need for a good run and strength workout tomorrow. Even though I am skipping my workout, there is LOTS to do tonight. Starting at the end of July and going all the way through October, we will have family from outside the US visiting: my sister in law and boyfriend from Ireland, then my sister and brother in law and adorable nephews visiting from Italy for all of August, then E’s parents and brother from Ireland in September. So that basically leads into tonight’s plans:

  • Prepping our new office/guest room to be painted
  • Planning our end of summer trip to San Francisco/wine country
  • Other travel plans for the year- Argentina? Spain? Ireland, absolutely!
  • The hubby’s birthday this Sunday!!! What to do?
  • Talk about our housing sitch. Do we sell or rent our condo? Do we sit tight until the market improves for selling?

As you can see there is a lot going on! With the economy in not so great shape, we have been able to take advantage of some great dining deals, and I wanted to share some of them with all of you. Sorry for the lack of photos in this post, but there are a few great links to menus, and reading menus is one of my favorite pasttimes, right up there with grocery shopping and reading recipes. 🙂

Ashmont Grill– Monday night wine club
Casual, fun, educational & a great value. Always four courses, always 6:30pm, always $30.

July 13th – Germany with Dr. Loosen
July 20th – Tour de France
July 27th – Taste of Sicily

Wine club is a lot of fun and informative, plus the four courses are small, but completely fill you up! And the wine pours are quite generous too!

I haven’t been, but Ashmont also does a $35 prix fixe menu on Tuesdays. Two great deals in a row!

Myers + Chang– Date night, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday

Choose from several date night menus for $20/person! Last time we had lemony shrimp dumplings, Thai ginger chicken salad, tofu “steak” with soba noodles, stir fried snap peas, and brown rice.

MasaPerfect for happy hour, Masa offers 50 cent Southwestern tapas from 5-7 each night. To try all 10, its $5 and certainly enough for a small meal or to tide a group of you over for dinner. Masa also offers an AMAZING brunch. I craved and ate their Southwest Eggs Benedict all through my marathon training last winter. Divine.

On our winter trip across Europe, the hubby and I traveled from Amsterdam to Vienna to Munich to Lake Lucerne Switzerland. Not only would I recommend this series of cities to anyone, but I really can’t wait to do it all over again!
Driving from Munich to Lake Lucerne was a ridiculously beautiful trip. The mountains, perfectly paved roads, forests, and cute architecture kept me entertained while E drove our adorable little VW, zipping along on roads without speed limits. We stopped at a rest stop at the Swiss/German border, and I was dumbfounded. It was beautiful, almost like a ski lodge, and motorists were relaxing with cups of espresso, wine, beers, and full meals. It was a far cry from the McD’s and an overcrowded restroom here in the states!
Entering Switzerland, we drove through some absolutely breathtaking countryside, with sheer bluffs into lakes/rivers, and rocky snow capped mountains on the other side. Before we knew it, we had pulled up to our hotel, Hotel Drei Könige.

Situated on the corner of a centrally located street in Lucerne, this hotel was perfect for us. Our room was large and offered windows to the street on several sides. It also had a fan! I can not sleep without some sort of white noise, and after over a week without, I finally had it back!
Our view from our window was of Gutsch Castle and Gutschwald, and I literally spent about an hour just looking out onto the street and up at the mountains. Switzerland is SO beautiful, and the air is so clean.

With food always on my mind, I had a couple of things I wanted to try in Switzerland:
Alpine Macaroni – a cheesy noodle dish with apples, onions, and potatoes. Hearty, creamy, salty, tangy, and sweet. Yes please!

Raclette- heated cheese served melty and hot with potatoes, gherkins, and bread. Give me anything with potatoes and pickles, and I am a happy gal, but this nutty, slightly salty meal really provides a feast for the tastebuds.

Fondue- gruyere and emmental cheeses, mixed with cherry kirsch liquer and garlic, served with bread. I loved the garlicky, sweet, and creamy taste of the fondue and the way the crisp wine cut through the creaminess.

All paired with Swiss white wine, Neuchatel.

I managed to eat all 3 of these things during our few days in Lake Lucerne, and while I do not have photos (sorry!) I can remember the sensory experience that Swiss dining brought to me. My favorite dish, surprisingly, was not fondue, but the Alpine Macaroni. I ordered this in a very cosy little restaurant with dim lighting and stone walls. I was completely surprised by how much I liked Swiss white wine, and when I was presented with a metal pot of Alpine Macaroni, I was in heaven. It is a simple dish of noodles, cheese, potatoes, onions, butter, and chopped apples or applesauce. Such a sweet and savory unexpected combination that really stuck to my ribs!

Our time in Switzerland was not cold at all, even though it was January, I ended up taking my coat off at times, especially when we were climbing up to Gutsch Castle and exploring the hillsides and city walls of Lucerne.

One of the highlights of the trip was a lake cruise, where my love and I got to relax, drink Swiss wine, and stop at the little towns around the lake itself. The weather was truly insane, pouring rain, then sun, so we were able to get an amazing sense of how the lake and mountains look in a variety of weather types.

In a nutshell, our trip to Lucerne was full of great food and wine but also lots of walking and hillwalking, cruising, looking at art and architecture, listening to music (hello free concert by the Salzburg Chamber Orchestra!), and relaxing. We went in winter, but I am pretty sure this is a year round destination that I would like to visit again very soon! 🙂

Hello blog world! It is Wednesday, and I am working from home tomorrow and have Friday off = no office for 4 days! Wahoo! AND I am holding an Amazing Grass Chocolate SuperFood giveaway; the drawing is Friday. Do tell your friends and feel free to post on your own blog if you have one. I hope this will be the first of many great giveaways. I love to share great things.

The hub and I just finished up with a great dinner at Myers + Chang here in Boston. It was a-mazing, and on the way home I got thinking about how much I love that restaurant, but also about the things that really pick me up during the week. First off, the dinner. Now I know I did an entire post on Myers + Chang awhile back, so I will keep it short. The reason I wanted to go there this evening in the first place is that they have tantalizing Facebook updates all day long. Today they updated about an Arnold Palmer lemonade/iced tea cocktail. This being one of my favorite beverage combos, I was sold. We each ordered one, and they came in glasses with fun straws:

For food, we ordered the Asian pickles, lemony shrimp dumplings, Thai ginger chicken salad, and the short rib tacos. The pickles came first, and I told my husband that I could eat these all day long. So crunchy and tangy and bright, they really brought my tastebuds to life. The dumplings came next, and since we have had these before, we knew to expect a creamy lemon taste, accompanied by a briny shrimp flavor. To die for. The Thai ginger chicken salad is my staple here, a bed of crunchy butter lettuce with rice noodles, chicken, Thai basil, mint, and some chopped hot peppers. This always hits the spot with a variety of textures and flavors. I really love noodles in a salad!

The hub’s tacos were good too. I consider myself a mostly non meat eater, but as I said to a co-worker who offered me her chorizo and potato dish Saturday night, “I eat meat if it looks good and I want to eat it.” I like the lack of rules I have developed about food! One of the best parts of the evening was that Joanne Chang herself was in the open kitchen cooking! She is a local celeb, amazing chef and baker, and someone I just really admire. I love that, though she is so successful, she is still at her restaurant cooking, tasting food, and greeting customers.

On the way home, I picked up some new Nasoya chocolate silken tofu. I have heard a lot about it, and can’t wait to make a banana chocolate spinach smoothie in the am to sip as I work. When I got here, I busted out another one of my favorite things, a Lush bath bomb. Lush sells a variety of delicious, natural, homemade bath and body products. I am partial to their bath bombs, bath melts, and toner tabs. If you have a store near you, definitely visit, even for the incredible smells!

I am off to have a glass of Spanish red from our Bin Ends purchases and to snuggle into bed to finish up my work for the day and to read some of your blogs and comments (another one of my favorite pick me ups!)

What picks you up on a rainy, gloomy, busy bad day? Hopefully the chance to WIN some Amazing Grass 🙂

My giant tub o’ superfood came today, but UPS didn’t leave it. Luckily I will be home tomorrow. Chocolate milk big time tomorrow afternoon!

Buenas noches, amigos 🙂
