Welcome to the very first Friday Foodie Feature! After All in Good Food wrote up  a review of my blog, I decided that what my blog really needed was to feature some of the great writers that I read every day! I came up with a few questions, and asked Mardi from Eat, Live, Travel, Write to be my first feature. You can read her great responses below. They are interesting and inspiring!

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

Meeting like minded souls from all over the world.  I also appreciate the fact that my blog is a bit of a creative outlet for me (my refuge from academia!).  I have just embarked on my PhD in Second Language Teaching (part-time) and my blog offers a way for me to keep my creative juices flowing.  Sometimes in academic programmes, we forget how to write when there is no word count.  This is actually one of the reasons I began the blog – to help myself remember how to write in my own natural voice again after 2 years of working on my MA.

Least favorite?

Well it’s not SO much about blogging per se but I just wish there were more hours in the day.  I find the blog takes up quite a bit more time than I originally anticipated (because there is all the “behind the scenes stuff” like reading and commenting on other blogs which is important and necessary to learn more as well as to grow readership).

What has been your most fun blog post to write? Sorry – there are four!

The BLT from scratch “reveal”
http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/09/they-say-it-takes-village-to-raise.html

or the Foodbuzz 24,24,24 based on our Lao cooking school experience

http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/08/foodbuzz-24-24-24-culinary-laap-of-laos.html

and recently, a cooking workshop I organised at the school where I teach:
http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2009/12/kids-in-kitchen.html

I also can’t NOT mention my amazing Bertolli “On the Menu” experience at the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival in November:

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I am not sure – everyday brings something new in the blogging world.  I would like to think that I might be writing a column for a respected website or publication or working in collaboration with some more established bloggers so that I can continue to learn and grow my blog.  Anyone want an intern???? 😉

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

Sometimes people are surprised when they come over to dinner and I don’t take a photo.  You know what?  Sometimes you just have to live in the moment and enjoy the eating experience.  There are a lot of food and/or diet blogs out there detailing each and every bite  the blogger eats – I don’t know how they do it.  Since I am fairly new, I do try to post something daily but I think as my readership grows and I have a little band of loyal readers, I will reduce this over the next few months.  There’s a fine balance between posting something worthwhile and posting something just for the sake of it and I don’t think I am quite there yet.  When you look at some of my favourite blogs – Chocolate & Zucchini, David Lebovitz, Steamy Kitchen, Smitten Kitchen, Chez Pim etc.. they are not posting every day.  I hope one day I will have the confidence in my blog to post much less often and be ok with it.
Thanks for reading – please come on over and check out my blog at www.eatlivetravelwrite.com.  I will be travelling in Paris and France over the next two weeks and there are a LOT of very fun food and wine related events planned, including a Foodbuzz 24,24,24 dinner!  You can also follow me on twitter: eatlivtravwrite.
Thanks for having me Meghan!

Hello lovelies! It is once again Sunday evening, and instead of sitting at home dreading work, I am out with my hubby at Ten Tables hopefully having a great dinner. I am so tired today, and after walking dogs this morning, am spending the day working on the blog and writing copy for my big work catalog. In case you missed my post on Friday, I joined Twitter, and you can now follow me here:

I need to work on my page, but one thing at a time! I am officially a Twitter addict, and I spent most of the car ride home from Newport on it. Speaking of Newport. . .

We drove down at around 9:30 yesterday morning to make it in time/early for the 12:00 start time of the Food & Wine Magazine sponsored Grand Tasting at the Newport Mansions Food and Wine Festival. On the way, we stopped at one of our favorite bakeries, Green Hills, in the Adams Village neighborhood of Dorchester. If you are looking for real Irish scones, go here. They are amazing and taste just like the ones that we get in Ireland. They make a great cup of tea and a bunch of other delectable baked treats too.

We arrived in Newport at Easton’s Beach at around 11:30. The festival was so well organized and provided free off site parking and a shuttle bus which made everything easy. It was a GORGEOUS day.

P9261212

I was very glad that I wore a jacket in the evening. Brrr!

The Grand Tasting was held at the Marble Mansion, which was only incredible. I can not even imagine the decadent lives that the residents of these mansions had. They are straight out of The Great Gatsby and The House of Mirth, two books that I love.

The tasting was out back under a giant tent with the most amazing views ever. Table after table featured wine, food, cocktails, event planners, you name it. I was in heaven and a little overwhelmed. Luckily my foodie friend Jill was there too. We started with bubbly, then made our way around for whites and then reds. I had some Mumm Napa which brought back memories of our recent trip. Then stopped for a nibble of cheese. I had a couple of delicious cheeses from Champignon North America, including a creamy, rich cambazola.

We got a couple of classic St. Germain cocktails and decided to sit outside to enjoy the view for a little bit, and to pace ourselves at this incredible feast.

Can you even imagine this being your lawn? I could certainly get used to it. . .

After resting for a bit, we went back inside and continued tasting. Overall I would say I tried about 15 wines, ate 3-4 small plates of the most amazing lobster macaroni and cheese ever, a few cups of tuna tartare with a delicious, gingery, chili flavor to it, a few bites of cheese from Kerrygold and Cabot Creamery, some chocolate from Pure chocolate, and a cup of hazlenut gelato from Gelato Giuliana. Oh yeah and a couple of shots of delicious, black coffee from Pierce Bros Coffee. Everything I had was in small portions, perfect to get just a taste. . . or in the case of our repeat visits for the lobster mac and cheese, a few amaaaaazing tastes!

One of the really cool things about the event was the Celebrity Chef area, where Jacques Pepin and Joanne Weir were both stationed at one point or another. I enjoyed browsing through Joanne Weir’s cookbooks while she talked to another event attendee about how great Julia Child was and how much she missed her! It was amazing. . . I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to know and be a colleague of Julia Child.

I grew up watching Jacques Pepin on public TV, and seeing him brought a tear to my eye. I really can remember loving food and cooking SO long ago and watching Jacques and his daughter in the kitchen

Not the best photo of him, it was crowded!

At the end of the day we discovered the Mionetto table which ended up being our very favorite. For some reason it was not at all crowded, and we got to chat with the helpful and knowledgeable rep while tasting all of the prosecco that he had to offer. I really fell for the gold label prosecco, and I will definitely be hunting it down very soon. It is a really affordable, ultimate celebration bubbly with a nice fruitiness that I think guests with all palates would enjoy. It is very easy to drink 🙂

After the event was over, the hubs and I ended up walking back to get the car, a nice 15 minute walk which led us back to the beach. I was feeling carefree and took my shoes off to walk in the ocean. It was SO warm!

P9261254 P9261259

I just love that space between summer and fall in New England where you just have to be outside, and it is just perfect. I would have gone swimming if I had brought a swimsuit.

We walked on the beach for  bit, saw a wedding about to take place as sun was going down, got a little weepy at this, oohed, aahed, then got in the car for some water and a Pure bar. The Healthy Living Summit swag bag just keeps on giving! 😉

We drove back into town to the hotel where our friends were staying and decided on sushi for dinner. We walked a very short walk from the hotel to the Newport Tokyo House. I had a Kirin Ichiban.

P9261265

And then a LOT of sushi. We had this, times two.

P9261267  P9261266

In addition to tempura vegetables and bowls of salted edamame. Honestly, I was still a little hungry after we were done! It was so good, especially the spicy tuna which was given to us in abundance and was very spicy. It was the perfect way to end a day full of culinary delights! I will definitely be attending this event again next year!

Don’t forget about my Get Well Stay Well giveaway which will stay open until Friday evening. Have a relaxing night!

Happy birthday season to my wonderful hub! His real birthday is Sunday, but since we will be out and about allllll day, I took him for his special birthday dinner tonight. He chose Smith & Wollensky for his special night, and it was absolutely fabulous. Smith & Wollensky is located in a castle-like building that was built in 1891, and from the outside and inside is spectacular.

We had drinks at the bar before being seated for our reservation. I had a perfect lemon drop cocktail. I really wanted a nice cold drink, and this was it. Sometimes lemon drops taste waaaay too much like vodka, but this had a lovely sugar rim and a lemony, fresh flavor.

Bread and menus

Bread and menus

When we were seated at our table, they brought a gorgeous rosemary and sea salt bread with butter and menus in old photo frames! It was really neat. I ordered the seared scallops with a chili sauce on the side. We also shared a wedge salad. I love me some blue cheese and iceberg lettuce once in awhile. We also split a half bottle of Calera Pinot Noir. I am loving Pinots lately and really am looking forward to our CA trip. I drank some awesome Pinots in Oregon last summer ( Erath!) and they are definitely my favorite wines.

The food was delicious. The lettuce was so crisp and refreshing and the blue cheese was garlicky and homemade. My scallops were perfectly sweet. That is one thing I love about scallops; they don’t need anything at all. Their natural flavor just shines through!

For dessert, they brought a surprise cake for the hub, which we shared, along with some Taylor Fladgate port.

All in all, this was a spectacular experience, from the minute we were greeted until we left. The service was truly impeccable, the food was superior quality, delicious, and perfectly filling, and it was just a great special occasion spot.
I had more posting planned for today on my lunch salad and disappointing Odwalla bar, but I will save that for another day. Smith & Wollensky has restaurants in several cities around the US, and I would absolutely recommend them for a really special dinner.
I am SO excited to celebrate my hub’s birthday this weekend, and I am working from home tomorrow. . . wooohoo! I hope you are all as happy as I am right now! Buenas noches 🙂
