The latest and greatest addition to Dorchester blends old and new for a beautiful and inviting space that is steeped in history and delicious spirits. We have been looking forward to visiting Boston Harbor Distillery since we first started to hear about it, and a trip to the boat mechanic right next door on Saturday was the perfect opportunity to stop in.

The space absolutely beautiful, jaw-dropping, really, with massive high ceilings, exposed beams and brick, an historic building lovingly refurbished into a rustic yet modern tasting room and distillery space.

Boston Harbor Distillery

Our visit was a quick one, and as a result I didn’t take many photos, but you can probably see just from these two how lovely all of the details are. Upon our arrival, distillery co-owner Corey took us around for a tour, sharing the history of the building, which had previously housed a nail factory and boat builder. All of the distillery’s products are named with a nod to previous building occupants, a nice way to fold in the old with the new. With so much having happened in one building, I wondered if the spirits in the bottle and barrels were the only spirits in that space?

As we went along we learned about the distilling process and saw what we were really looking for, Boston Harbor Distillery’s Putnam New England Whiskey, still in the barrel. We also got to taste the spirits that are currently available, Lawley’s New England Spirit, Lawley’s Dark New England Spirit, and Seymour’s Local Roast Coffee Liqueur, all really delicious and different from one another. We also tried a sample of a New England Daiquiri, made with Lawley’s New England Spirit. You can find the cocktail recipe on the Boston Harbor Distillery website.

Boston Harbor Distillery  The two New England spirits are basically rums, but because the distillery distills them from molasses and maple syrup, they can’t legally call them rum. Either way, they are delicious.

We left with a Lawley’s Dark New England Spirit, which is perfect with some ice and seltzer, we found. After some discussion my husband returned the next day for Seymour’s Local Roast Coffee Liqueur, which we think would be the perfect addition to an iced coffee on a hot summer afternoon. The whiskey is not quite ready yet, but we will be keeping a close eye on our emails to find out when it will be. The distillery has some fun plans in the future, including possible sale of cocktails, which would be a really great addition to the Dorchester going out scene. Hopefully they will be able to cut through all of the red tape and to make these ideas realities in the not-so-distant future.

It’s great to have a new small business in Dorchester and to give more people reason to come down to our part of Boston so they can see for themselves how great it really is. I look forward to seeing what comes next for Boston Harbor Distillery and wish  them all the luck as they make their way into a hopefully very busy summer.

We skipped right through spring, and lately it has felt like summer is in full effect. I will take it! I  wouldn’t mind summer three seasons of the year, to be honest. Just in time for summer, Dorchester has a new ice cream spot, and we were delighted to attend the opening party last week.

Chill on Park is in the Fields Corner neighborhood of Dorchester, near Dorchester Ave and the baseball fields there. It’s a busy area and the perfect spot for an ice cream and coffee shop.

The space is really beautiful, modern, bright, and peaceful. It’s well designed and offers free WiFi so would be a great place for a meeting or remote work.

They offer a variety of different ice cream flavors, shakes, ice cream pies, and other treats. The salted caramel moose tracks was my favorite ice cream, but there are many more I want to try. Everything here is local, from the staff, hired through local groups like the Boys & Girls Club, to the ice cream, which comes from Puritan Ice Cream in Roslindale. I love Dorchester, so when I see people investing in businesses and kids in the neighborhood, I am always happy to support.

One of the perks of the opening party were adult milkshakes, which won’t be served regularly. They were delicious though, and they gave me ideas for making similar treats at home. I had the Irish milkshake, and it was outstanding.

The Cookies & Cream was good too!

The party also featured a cake made by one of our favorites, Green Hills, another Dorchester business, and cookies made by Haley House. How great would it be if all businesses in our area leaned on one another with such support?

Chill on Park is the perfect place to go to fix that sweet summer ice cream craving while helping to build a business that is in turn striving to be something bigger in the community. I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again, especially when nieces and nephews are visiting. I am also looking forward to Chill on Park’s coffee.

I was invited to this event as a guest and treats were complimentary. All opinions are my own.

This cozy little Dorchester spot is perfect for this time of year. Our recent visit to Cafe Polonia was a celebration with great friends, delicious food, and really good beer. November 6 would have been my nana’s 100th birthday, and since her background was Eastern European, we decided to celebrate with Polish food. It was perfect.

Cafe Polonia Dorchester

Cafe Polonia has a large menu and it’s a good spot to visit with friends so that you can order and share a bunch of items . We started with the kielbasa and smoked salmon with caviar. I liked that the salmon was a lighter dish as I knew our main courses would be heavy and involve a good bit of meat. The kielbasa is the perfect bite, dunked in spicy mustard for a little bit of a kick.

salmon and caviar We decided to share entrees as well, the Polish plate for him and the potato pancake with smoked salmon for me. We ate potato pancakes often while I was growing up, so this was a nice little trip down memory lane. They were perfectly crispy and excellent with the smoky, salty salmon.

The Polish plate is a sure bet and a must-order for at least one person at your table. The plate includes sausage, Hunter’s Stew, pierogis, and stuffed cabbage with a delicious side of braised cabbage. Whatever you order, expect a lot of food.

I highly recommend a trip to Dorchester this winter to check out the comfort food at Cafe Polonia.
