Every day, I open up my laptop and I read some truly amazing blogs. I read the blogs that I read because I like the writer’s voice, I like the innovative spirit behind the blog, I trust that blogger’s recommendations because they are tried and true. Most recently, though I tend to make up a lot of recipes myself, I have been garnering meal-inspiration from bloggers. Last week, I made Michelle’s nut encrusted chicken (twice!), and I have been making mental notes of other blog recipes like crazy. On Saturday night, after a day on snowshoes, it was Elina who provided the inspiration. After reading about her Filipino Adobo Chicken, I could not get the photos of the flavorful brown sauce out of my head.

I am vowing to eat more meat between now and the Napa Marathon. It might not agree with everyone, but I feel like I need the added protein, and I am finding that organic, humanely-raised meat makes me feel more energetic.

We normally only eat chicken breast, unless I make a whole chicken, which apparently my husband doesn’t love because of all of the dark meat. Something about making a whole chicken just feels right in the wintertime though, so you will likely see at least once more before spring graces our doorsteps.

I followed Elina’s lead with the chicken and used drumsticks for a change. I also pulled out some organic apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, jalapenos, and bay leaves.

Chicken with Soy and Vinegar Sauce

After doing my best to skin the chicken (and some skin fell on my bare foot, EW!), I whipped up a marinade using the above ingredients. I really eyeballed it but made sure I used a lot of garlic and several sliced jalapeno peppers, seeds and all.

jalapenos

Once the garlic and jalapenos were chopped, I added the chicken, then poured in the liquid ingredients, using tongs to toss the chicken and to coat it nicely with the sauce. I set this aside for about an hour before putting it on the stove to cook for 45 minutes.

As Elina’s posts mentioned, the meat fell off of the bone. Every time I opened my trusty Le Creuset pot the tangy smell that escaped was amazing. By the time the chicken was done, we were dying to eat.

As we had a late lunch, a spinach salad with nuts, cheese, and fruit, I kept it simple and sautéed some mushrooms that I bought, already cut and cleaned, at Trader Joe’s. They cooked for awhile in a pat of butter, then I added them to the chicken and sauce. mushrooms

The combinations of flavors was intense and delicious! The meat was so rich, and the sauce had us using our hands, spoons, mushrooms, whatever we could to mop it all up. As a lover of vinegar, I was thrilled with the way this dosh brought a burst of flavor with each bite. I will definitely be making it again and again. Thank you, Elina, for the inspiration!

I feel like paying extra for mushrooms that are cleaned and chopped is totally worth it because I HATE getting the dirt off of mushrooms. I just don’t seem to get it all, and it disgusts me.

What convenience do you feel it is worth it to pay extra for? Grated carrots? Pom arils already removed from the pomegranate? Tell me I am not the only one!

Happy New Year’s Eve! Are you ready for an evening of fun and/or relaxation? I am very much looking forward to what is our third-annual New Year’s Eve at home. In past years, snow storms have kept us in, and we have ended up loving those nights much more than any NYE out.

Whatever you are doing tonight, be safe and have fun. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming back here to read this blog everyday. It has been quite the year!

Today’s featured foodie is a good friend of mine and a daily read in my blog lineup. Alicia, from The Clean Plate Club, shares fun recipes, restaurant reviews, and other great posts, and over the past few months I have gotten to know that she is a ton of fun in person as well. We have traveled to King Arthur Flour together, attended many blogger events, and even had an amazing holiday potluck celebration together.  Alicia recently moved to Hartford, CT, and the Boston blogger scene definitely won’t be the same without her. I am hoping to be able to discover more of the CT food scene through Alicia and to have lots of visits from her!

The Clean Plate Club

How long have you been blogging?

I started The Clean Plate Club in January of 2009 – so I have been blogging for nearly 2 years!

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

It’s pretty hard to narrow it down, but I would say that one thing that keeps me going is the community that blogging gets me involved in. I have always had a love of cooking and writing. My blog brings the two together, and also gives me a space where I can receive support, constructive criticism, set goals for myself and be constantly learning from the people around me. It’s opened me up to meeting some of the most interesting, talented and passionate people I’ve ever encountered. And although everyone is so incredibly talented, I’ve only run into a small number of people who are not in it to strengthen the group as a whole.

Least favorite?

I’m my own worst critic. Sometimes it is REALLY hard to maintain a consistent momentum in my posting because I’m always striving to improve, and I can sometimes get caught up in self editing and second-guessing myself. The “is anyone really going to care about this” mentality really slows down my writing. Blogging can sometimes bring out that negative little voice in my head – which is challenging!

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

I’m breaking the rules because I can’t pick just one!

One of my favorite posts to write was about my trials and tribulations about trying out for Master Chef last year. When it happened I was so sad, almost devastated. But after I thawed out I could finally see the humor in the situation.

The most fun I’ve ever had in relation to this blog – was the trip to King Arthur flour. I had so much fun learning to bake, and learning from a real instructor – my face hurt from smiling all day. Then when I made my own bread – alone in my kitchen, I felt like the King Arthur training really did its job to make me more comfortable baking.

The post I am most proud of is the one about my grandmother after she passed away in July. It was probably the hardest thing I had to write, but I think I did her proud. It felt like the right thing to do – since knowing & learning from her shaped a lot of what I do in the kitchen. I thought it was an appropriate tribute. If there had been blogging in her day, she would be giving Molly Wizenberg a run for her money!

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

Now that I’ve relocated to CT – I have so much more spare time. I hope that in a year, I’m posting a more frequently. Also I intend on using my blog and food to get to know my new surroundings.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

When I started writing – it was just a journal of what I was creating in my own kitchen. I never imagined I would be going to VT to take baking classes, or attending special restaurant dinners or going to book signings to meet Joanne Chang or Amanda Hesser. These experiences have exposed me to new people, new methods, and new ingredients and have resulted in me being more outgoing in my own kitchen. And I also want to thank anyone who reads and comments. EVERYTIME I get a new comment I get SO excited. Keep ‘em coming!

Cookies were the focal point of the night, but where there is an event, there are Boston bloggers who will get together early, stay late, and generally find ways to extend the fun.

A few weeks ago, I received an email from Elizabeth inviting me to a cookie and brownie tasting of Geoff & Drew’s baked goods. Never one to turn down the opportunity to taste new products, and with the desire to visit the brand new Clover Food Lab in Harvard Square, I RSVP’d yes and made plans to meet a few other bloggers beforehand.

I met Megan in Harvard Square, just outside the T, and we headed to Noir in the Charles Hotel where we ordered cocktails while we waited for Daisy and Emily.

Noir is a dimly lit, sorta swanky bar, perfect for a place with an extensive cocktail list and tasty bar bites. To warm my freezing bones, I ordered a Sazerac, new orleans style – old overholt rye whiskey, peychaud’s bitters, simple syrup & a touch of ricard pastis.

Not a drink for the faint of heart, a Sazerac satisfied my need for an strongly flavored cocktail and truly did warm me from the inside out. Did I mention I went for a 12 mile run in 16 degree weather earlier in the day?

Sazerac

We shared the avocado dip (guacamole) and a couple of flatbread pizzas while we chatted. The pizza with the prosciutto, dried peaches, arugula, goat cheese, and balsamic reduction was pretty delectable with its sweet and salty contrasts. I would definitely order this again.

We stopped at small bites as we knew we had the job of cookie tasters ahead.

When Elizabeth was planning the tasting, the owner of Clover generously allowed her to plan the event in their large new space in Harvard Square. Well lit, smelling of rosemary fries, and decorated with a huge Christmas tree surrounded by Lionel trains, the ones we had at home when I was little, Clover is a really inviting place that I will definitely return to.

Clover Harvard Square

We bloggers got settled, and soon enough Geoff & Drew’s President and Chief Cookie Girl, Carol Spickler, arrived to tell us a little about her company and to shower us in baked goods.

Stashed away in cute little gift boxes were a variety of cookies including chocolate chunk, white chocolate cranberry, and oatmeal cranberry as well as a variety of brownies such as their “very special” toffee brownies and my favorite, the peppermint chocolate brownie.

Carol told us about the beginnings of the company as Late Night Cookies in Brighton, delivering milk, cookies, and ice cream to area college students. This reminded me of my beloved Sugar Jones. If you went to UMASS Amherst, you know what I mean Winking smile

Carol also shared some of their successes including the fact that their cookies are the Boston Red Sox favorite cookies and that they were also once thoroughly enjoyed by Nate Berkus. Nate, please invite Geoff & Drew’s on your show and ask me to be in the audience to blog about it? Pretty please? Be right back

If you check out their press page, you will also see that they have been featured in Modern Bride, on Rachael Ray, and on the Today Show Destination Wedding Series, to name a few.

While the press is impressive, the products speak for themselves. As mentioned above, I was especially enamored with the peppermint chocolate brownie which married fudgey chocolate with cool peppermint, a flavor combo that I can’t get enough of. The chocolate chunk cookies were also delicious with big chunks of chocolate and chewy cookie.

I washed it all down with a Clover hot cider.

Carol was kind enough to bring cookies for us to bring home so my husband could have a chocolatey treat (after a 15.5 hour work day Sad smile)

It was exciting and refreshing to meet someone who has gone after a dream and succeeded. As I search for and follow my bliss right now, I love meeting people who may have gone a less traditional route but who have used hard work to build something fantastic.

Geoff & Drew’s, known as the Tiffany of cookies for their high quality products, are “baking people happy”, and I am excited to have them as a local business.

Thanks to Elizabeth for organizing, to Carol and everyone at Geoff & Drew’s for sharing their story and their deliciousness, and to my fellow bloggers for always being a ton of fun!

HAPPY FRIDAY! This weekend I have a birthday party, a date night, and a Champagne and Port tasting at the Urban Grape. AND I will announce the winner of the Kerrygold contest, so be sure to enter!
