What do you get when you mix a bunch of Boston bloggers, Healthworks, Whole Foods, Joos, Mix Bakery cupcakes, and a beautiful summer evening?

A fabulous blogger picnic, of course!

The great people at Healthworks organized another fun blogger event for all of us food and fitness bloggers to get together to enjoy some healthy food and conversation. The group first met up at Healthworks for a Bosu class which I unfortunately missed due to a meeting. (But don’t worry, I did my workout at lunch, and it saved me from a horrific day. It’s amazing how even the smell of Healthworks calms me down!)

Then we grabbed bagged picnic dinners provided by Whole Foods Market and headed out to Copley Square. We learned a little bit about Whole Foods’ Health Starts Here initiative  to help people move toward a plant-strong, nutrient dense, whole food diet with healthy fats.

I dove into a delicious avocado sandwich on sprouted grain bread. It was so hearty and filling! I also had some quinoa salad with cranberries and oranges and a bowl of fruit salad, another reminder how delicious whole, real food is. It was so nice to eat in the grass, it really felt like summer!

While we were eating, Laurie and Marisa from Joos passed out samples of their fresh and vital juice. You may remember I tried this at the CRAVE Boston event awhile back and loved it. I need more veggie juice in my life! I may even be thinking about a Joos cleanse. . . stay tuned.

Some of my favorite bloggers were in attendance, We are not Martha, Healthy and Sane, The Daily Craic, Fitarella, and Crunches for Cupcakes (and lots of other wonderful bloggers, once the list is emailed I will update!).

After dinner and Joos, there was the piece de resistance, Mix Bakery Cupcakes. If you read about my Boston Wine Exchange wine tasting or about my early summer Cape trip, you will know I am a Mix Bakery devotee. I am not exaggerating when I say these are the best cupcakes I have ever had. They bring the perfect ratio of frosting to cake, and the frosting is not too sweet at all. Last night Kelly brought peanut butter cup cupcakes and naked carrot cake, no raisins or nuts, just the way I like it.

These are so perfectly flavored and high quality that 2 mini cupcakes were enough to make my sweet tooth happy without making me feel too full. I love mini cupcakes!

A summer picnic with a bunch of wonderful women eating delicious food, does it get any better? Thanks so much to Whole Foods, Joos, Mix Bakery, and of course, Judith and Hannah from Healthworks for making my day a million times better. What a great community!

A few weeks ago, I saw a tweet from Megan about meeting up to attend Taste of Cambridge. Being a big fan of “Taste of” events, I bought a ticket and arranged to meet her at the event.

Since it was another beautiful Boston day, I decided to walk through the Public Garden to get to the Charles Street T station. On the way, I met a few very aggressive squirrels and passed by this nesting swan.

I stopped to take a few photos of the flowers in the garden. Oh what a difference a few months makes! Boston is at its best this time of year!

Before meeting up with Megan, I tried a Nantucket Nectars watermelon strawberry drink which was refreshing and not too sweet. I was glad that I was well hydrated as the Taste of Cambridge offered a variety of cocktails in addition to beer and wine.

As VIP guests, we had a few cocktail tickets in the form of tomatoes on our nametags. We all agreed that we would start with a St. Germain cocktail made by Upstairs on the Square, The Lovely Kathleen.

In addition to being really pretty, The Lovely Kathleen had a beautifully tart flavor with a hint of violet. It was delicious.

Upstairs on the Square chef Susan Regis was also doing a non-cooking demo with some summery steak and salads. It was pretty entertaining.

Though I don’t eat beef, the steak looked pretty good. . .

Instead of digging in to the food quite yet, we opted for another cocktail, this time a watermelon basil cooler from Tavern in the Square. It was cool and refreshing and combined two of my favorite summer ingredients, basil and watermelon.

We then dug into the food, some gazpacho and pizza from Stone Hearth Pizza and these shrimp toasts which I THINK were from Russell House Tavern.

Of the MANY cold soups of the evening, we really enjoyed Ten Tables’ creamy asparagus soup.

I loved the butternut squash arancini from Tavern in the Square but thought the choice of butternut squash was a little too autumnal. . . give me some in October!

Jasper White’s Summer Shack offered this lovely clam ceviche.

And the awesomely fun and delicious How2Heroes table was packed full of baked goods.

The How2Heroes team also had Chili Pepper Jell-O shots which required a waiver before consumption! I caught Chelsee and Susie from We are not Martha knocking back some spicy Jell-O.

After watching these ladies suffer the heat of the shots, I grabbed some kimchi from Koreana. I could live on kimchi, I love it so much.

My final taste of the evening was a flatbread pizza from Jody Adams of Rialto. It had duck on it, and while I normally do not eat duck, I actually really liked this.

I also sipped on a Harpoon IPA throughout the evening. There were so many different tastes to try that I couldn’t photograph all of them, but I hope you get the gist: the food at this event was plentiful and delicious!

The best part about Taste of Cambridge is that the whole thing benefits two great charities, City Sprouts and YWCA. I am more than happy to support such great causes and give a big round of applause to the chefs and others who donate their time and resources to an event that raises money for them.

I enjoyed seeing the We are not Martha girls along with Megan and her friend Nina and Justin (@justincancook) and meeting other Twitter friends. Boston has the BEST Twitter/Blogger community, and I can’t wait for the fun events the summer brings.

My weekend kicked off to a great start last night. After what felt like a forever work day, I spent some time wandering and shopping the Copley Square Farmer’s market. It was the perfect way to decompress; you really can not go wrong with lots of sunshine, fresh flowers, and local fruits, veggies, cheeses, and baked goods! Oh how I love the farmer’s market!

One of the things I love about local food is how, before our eyes, the options change and grow, especially as we launch officially into summer. So many of these things were not available a few weeks ago!

I really wanted to stock up, but since we are away all day Saturday and I had dinner plans tonight, I just bought some of these adorable UFO-shaped Patty Pan squash. I plan on stuffing them with some sort of mixture, feta, garlic, and olives maybe?

Copley is such a great place to be on a warm summer Friday! The flowers are certainly different than they were in this photo.

After some more wandering and shopping, I reached my final destination for the evening, Vlora Mediterranean Restaurant. Earlier in the week I had been invited by the ladies from We are not Martha for a blogger get together to meet Erica from Itzy’s Kitchen. Erica went to high school with Chelsee and Susie, and she was in town to visit family, so it was the perfect opportunity for them to reconnect and for the rest of us to meet her. Besides, do a bunch of Boston food bloggers need an excuse to get together? 😉

Vlora

I had been to Vlora once before for Restaurant Week and enjoyed a really delicious lunch, so I was excited to return. Since I was a little early, I sat at the bar and ordered a Prosecco which was dry and bubbly, ideal for the summery night. Vlora has a great wine selection and a beautiful, airy Mediterranean decor.

While waiting at the bar, I met Erica and got to see Bridget again.

Soon enough, we were all seated at a comfy long table with lots of natural light. Perfect for taking photos! It seems like bloggers ALWAYS have something to talk about! It’s a great community to be a part of.

Vlora and Boston bloggers

Vlora was kind enough to let us sample some of their favorite dishes before we ordered. There was the watermelon and feta, an Albanian dish that combines sweet watermelon with salty, creamy feta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and parsley. I would return to Vlora for several plates of this alone, it was so good, so simple but completely flavorful and delicious.

Vlora watermelon and feta

We also tried the trio of pies which each had a different filling, yogurt, spinach and feta, and tomato and onion. I had the yogurt pie which was flaky and filled with a creamy seasoned yogurt.

image

We also had arancini, pan roasted zucchini with garlic yogurt, and grilled octopus which was meaty and scrumptious. Everything was so simple and reminded me that good food doesn’t always need a million ingredients, they just need to be good ingredients.

image image

I grabbed a few photos as the sun was setting, and the blue light’s in Vlora’s atrium made for a kind of cool effect.

We then ordered more food, of course. I ended the night with a perfect vegetarian moussaka, layers of eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, potato, Swiss cheese, and tomato, served with garlic yogurt and cucumber sauce.

image

I had so much fun chatting with Colleen and her sister Meg who is going to be married in Ireland in a week and a half (jealous!). I also spent lots of time talking with Alicia and finally had the chance to meet Naomi.

All in all it was a great night. The food at Vlora is awesome, and I really want to try about 20 other menu items, so we will definitely be going back. And the company was fantastic. I loved meeting Erica and now want to go to Charleston, and it was great to see all of the others. Seriously, we should plan a Boston food blogger conference. Anyone want to co-plan with me?

I have The ALLY Foundation Pink for a Change gala in Newport this evening, so I should be back with some beautiful Newport mansion photos. I am also cooking up a fun giveaway for the week ahead.

Later gators!
