Most of our time spent in Boston this summer was spent dining out in old favorites in Dorchester and Milton. I have been a bad Bostonian and have rarely even gone downtown. I’ll chalk it up to work busy-ness but also my desire to kind of just be during the summer. Rather than getting ready and rushing into the crowds for dinnertime, I preferred to throw on a sundress and sandals for a last minute, relaxing local bite.

One exception was a reunion of our Tanzania travel group (Read all about my trip to Tanzania on posts on my travel blog page.) at Poe’s Tip Tap Room. Chosen for the possibility of game on the menu, the Tip Tap Room ended up being a nice surprise.

First of all, I had driven and run past it many many times before and never even noticed it. It’s not hidden at all, but does sort of blend in, and it just wasn’t on my radar as a place to go.

We arrived early and found the bartender to be excellent, funny, warm, and welcoming. The beer selection, as you would imagine in a tap room, was also really great.

Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout

We love Anderson Valley and beer from Anderson Valley, and we were both excited to see this Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, a favorite.

The Tip Tap Room was perfectly noisy, a must for our excited group, and it offered lots of great plates for sharing. As we caught up on the months since camping in the Serengeti together, small plates flew around the table.

We shared so many delicious plates that when it came down to dinner, I was full and went a “lighter” route with a chopped salad topped with a poached egg and a corn gazpacho, both amazing and totally filling. I felt like I could barely move to leave the restaurant!

The food and beer at The Tip Tap Room was outstanding. Every dish had perfectly chosen ingredients and flavors, and everything was great quality. Service was great, the beer selection left almost too many options and more of a reason to return. It’s a great spot for after work and for slightly noisy groups. I look forward to a return visit with friends.

It’s amazing how, the second Labor Day weekend was over, my email inbox starting filling up with event invitations. August was dead quiet, and I not-so-secretly like that. Summer is for barefoot evenings curled up in a patio chair enjoying the sunset. Fall, however, is for reconnecting, catching up, and kicking off events’ season. I am always a fan of wine for a good cause and am happy to share Raise Your Glass for Jimmy, a wine event happening this October 2. Please see below for details.

The sixth annual Raise Your Glass for Jimmy presented by the Jimmy Fund Council of Greater Boston will take place 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2at the Battery Wharf Hotel in Boston. All proceeds support adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Admission to the event includes a wide variety of beers and wines to taste from August West Wines, Blue Hills Brewery, Boston Bottle, Gordon’s Fine Wines and Liquors, Mayflower Brewery, Medusa Brewery, M.S. Walker, Plymouth Bay Winery, and Wormtown Brewery. The event also includes hors d’oeuvres, live music, and a silent auction.

Tickets are $75 per person, and early bird pricing is available with two tickets for $125 if purchased before Sept. 21. The first 150 guests at the door will receive a $25 gift certificate from Tresca. For more information, visit www.jimmyfund.org/raise-your-glass.

Our weekend in Mystic was full of great food and drink. We were surprised and delighted by the sheer number of options available, and we did our best to try them all. For more on wine and food in the Mystic area, check out these posts:

Our very first stop during our weekend in Mystic was at the American Velvet Mill for some beer tasting at Beer’d Brewing Co.

Beer'd Brewing Co.

We were surprised at the activity going on in the Velvet Mill; it was really cool! There was a farmers market going on in the wide open warehouse space, along with little artists studios along the sides. We peeked in at paintings and potters making pottery. You could easily spend an afternoon wandering around this lively space. It’s right near the Long Island Sound, tucked away in a residential neighborhood, and well worth a visit.

Beer’d offers free tastings of their beers on tap, and then you can buy pints to drink there or growlers to bring off site.

The space at Beer’d is charming and rustic and backs up to the brewery, so you can see where all the action happens.

Beer'd We went through the tasting and then went for pints of our favorites, the roasty, chocolate-y P2 Precious Porter and the Whisker’d Whit Belgian, which was citrusy and refreshing. We’re big fans of stout, and while they didn’t have the Roulette Russian Imperial Stout available for tasting, once we expressed interest, they found us some sizeable samples. It was amazing, one of the best beers I have ever had, super dark with strong coffee notes and a perfect bit of bitter, like coffee and cacao.

We left with a few yummy growlers full for home and a great first impression of Beer’d. Everyone who worked there was so warm and welcoming as well as really excited about the beer. It’s a fun place to hang out and people watch, and we would definitely visit again on our next Mystic getaway.
