Happy Bastille Day! It was a day of gorgeous food, until dinner that is. I started out with a great green monster (spinach, Amazing Grass, blueberries, banana, pumpkin, and choc soy milk) and for lunch had a delicious homemade gazpacho (canned plum tomatoes, 1/4 red onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 large cucumber, 1 large red pepper, drizzle olive oil, 1/3 cup cold water, cracked black pepper, all blended together) with a sandwich thin and a big ol’ bag of cherries and almonds. The dinner at my favorite restaurant, Petit Robert, was one of the most disappointing meals in a long time. I will blog about that tomorrow as today I have reserved for only good things: New England coastal wine.

After our fab day in Newport on Sunday,we drove about 5 miles to Portsmouth, RI for a visit to Greenvale Vineyards. Back in June, we tasted some of Greenvale’s wine at the Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff and wanted more.

If you read my blog, then you know that I love wine. I love all of the dozens of different flavors that can come from grape varietals and storing methods, and I love the way the flavors bring out food. Over the past year plus, I have really gotten into visiting vineyards, and I have been lucky so far to visit vineyards in Italy, wine tastings in Spain, a wine tour in Oregon, and several vineyards in RI and MA, plus many other local tasting events and wine dinners.

I don’t just love the wine in visiting vineyards; I also really love the whole experience, the fields of grapes and the beautiful scenery that often accompanies these visits. Greenvale Vineyards certainly offered the whole package.

From the long country road, to the fields and marshes leading down to the bright blue sea, to the fields of grapevines, and the quaint, beautiful wooden house, Greenvale takes you on a mini vacation from the second you arrive. Though not far at all from Newport and the main road, I felt totally worlds away from the city.

We were greeted in the tasting room by a friendly member of the staff and a gorgeous black lab. Nature: check, dog: check. . . wine: check. Meghan is a happy girl!

We definitely planned on doing a tasting and got started right away. Over the course of the tasting we tried:

2006 Chardonnay Select: Oak aged, this chardonnay was not for me. I am not a chardonnay fan in general, and while this wasn’t bad, it just had a burst of oaky flavor that I don’t care for.

2005 Greenvale Chardonnay: This chardonnay was better as it was a blend of oak and steel aged wine. It had a more buttery finish and was definitely more drinkable.

2007 Greenvale Vidal Blanc: This refreshing, light, delicious white was the star of the day on Sunday, as it was at the Coastal Wine Kickoff. It has crispy, sunny flavors that are perfect for drinking out on the deck. I would pair it with anything from a light cheese to seafood to a light summery dessert.

Skipping Stone White: I also tried this at the Coastal Wine Kickoff. It is my second favorite Greenvale wine now, with a very floral nose and a slight acidic crispness that I would love with a nice curry.

2005 Cabernet Franc: This is a very lovely, rich red that tasted like dark red fruit and had a nice smooth finish. We didn’t buy any of this, but I plan on buying some for the fall.
The lovely and engaging woman who poured the wine for us chatted with us quite a bit about her upcoming wedding, and we talked about our wedding a bit as well as travel. She was a delightful person, and our conversation added another element about wine that I love, communication and socialization. The friendly staff at Greenvale are reason enough to return, and the variety of different, yet all delicious wines are a definite bonus. They also have jazz every Saturday afternoon. If you are in the RI/MA area, I would absolutely recommend a visit to Greenvale. I know that we will be going back and look forward to more adventures on the Coastal Wine Trail!

Newport Bridge

Newport Bridge

Hello everyone and Happy Sunday! Today is my beloved husband’s birthday, and it was such a great day! I am completely exhausted and will be back with a full recap tomorrow but wanted to share some of our day with you today.

My husband turns 31 today, and it has been a really incredible year! He started his Masters’ degree and finished his first year (one to go!) while working 60+ hours a week. We had a new niece this year, and we have traveled quite a bit: Ireland (twice), Spain, Iceland, Montreal, and New York City were some of the highlights. He works so hard, and I wanted today to be really a day for him to be out of the office in the great outdoors relaxing.

We started with flaxseed and raspberry pancakes and huge green monsters (spinach, flax, chocolate almond milk, blueberries, bananas, ice, and chocolate SuperFood), stopped at the MSPCA to drop off dog and cat treats, and headed to Newport, RI. The morning was dreadfully cloudy as it POURED all night long, but when we arrived in Newport and rented our boat for the afternoon, the sun came out, and we had blue skies all around!

Renting a boat for the day was a big surprise to my husband, and he loved it! We drove around the harbor and just outside, and spent sometime just relaxing out on the water. The sights were amazing and included lots of really cool boats and mansions, including the childhood summer home of Jacqueline Kennedy.

We forgot the camera on the boat outing, so these are blackberry photos, not too bad though. Don’t worry, I photographed the rest of the day which included a Portugese Festival, lobster lunch and Newport Storm beer, fudge, a walk around Newport, and two vineyards, Newport Vineyards, and Greenvale Vineyards, and dinner at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Ashmont Grill. I will post about all of that tomorrow. I am really getting the hang of taking photos of everything I do, and its kind of fun!

Ahh it was a great day. We have been seriously considering buying a boat, and renting one today brought home how much fun it would be. We already decided on a name, “Ceol na mara”, Irish for music of the sea. We are going to spend tonight talking about future travels and boat buying. I am a little stressed because in general we plan really great, long holidays when we travel, and right now all I want to do is have enough time off to take days here and there to recoup from all of the long hours I am working. BUT I still want to have enough time off to go to Argentina in November. What to do?

I wanted to remind everyone that my Nigella Express giveaway started today. To enter, just link back to my blog on yours and leave a comment about your fave chef, celebrity or otherwise.

Some of my favorite bloggers are also having giveaways: Marathon Val and her Holey Donuts, and Lynn over at The Actor’s Diet has a Mirabella lip gloss AND Ginger Chews giveaway. And, An Apple a Day is giving away some delish looking fruit spreads. I love all of this spreading the love in the foodie/fitness blogging world!

Have a really great Sunday evening and Monday (ugh already???). See you all soon 🙂

Wow, is it gorgeous out! Do you guys remember that “It’s a sunshine day” song from The Brady Bunch? I used to watch that show alllll the time.

I hope that you all had a good day. Mine was not too bad at all! Started it out with a very filling smoothie complete with Nasoya Chocolate Silken Creations, chocolate soy milk, spinach, Chocolate SuperFood, and a half cup of pumpkin. It was rich, smooth, and delicious, but I could only finish 3/4. I plan on freezing the rest and eating it like ice cream a bit later tonight. Yum!

My run home was a-mazing! I stretched after about a mile and it made all the difference in the way my knees and ankles felt. There are times when I feel like I am in great shape cardiovascularly but my legs just ache. I loved how warm and sunny it was out. It feels good to sweat!

On the way home, I stopped at the Newmarket Produce stand near my house and went a little crazy:

I was craving cherries the entire run, so I bought some more. I crave the strangest things when running, today it was fruit, but sometimes its skim milk. Weird, huh? Do you guys crave anything while running? The funny thing is when I actually finish, I usually can’t eat anything.

I am off to do some strength training, then to make some Dr. Praeger’s veggie burgers and salad topped with a little bit of this:

Homemade hummus

I LOVE making my own hummus and white bean dips. Eaten hot or cold, they are delicious with veggies, bread, and even alone! My recipe:

2 cups of dried chickpeas, soaked overnight and simmered on low for about 30 minutes in a pot with the soaking water + 3-4 cloves of garlic, fresh ground black pepper, and crushed red pepper

3 cloves of raw garlic

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1/3 cup water

I cook some of the garlic to take some of the bite out of it, but also include a few cloves of raw because I love a garlicky kick! I just blend this all together until super smooth in my Cuisinart. If I have it on hand, I throw in a few drops of sesame oil as well.

Ok, that is enough for now. I hope you all have a good evening. With The Bachelorette and Weeds, it is a super fun tv night for me! 🙂
