I love tapas. I love it so much that I had it for my birthday dinner last year in Iceland, and I usually end up in a tapas bar no matter where I go (somewhat similar to how we end up in an Irish bar in pretty much any world city we have ever visited ;))

My two favorite tapas restaurants in Boston are Toro in the South End and Taberna De Haro in Brookline. In my mind, these places could not be more different. Toro is very South End and does a mouthwatering, maybe more modern, twist on tapas you may have eaten before.

Taberna De Haro is like eating in a friend’s home. It is small, warm, and cozy with incredibly welcoming staff, a great wine list, and is usually bustling and busy, creating a fun, fiesta-like atmosphere.

This past Friday, to celebrate my husband leaving work before 7:00 and the fat that it was still light out at 5:25, we met after work in Brookline for a table full of our favorite tapas.

As always. I started with bubbly Spanish cava. We ordered many (too many) small plates to share:

Queso de cabra (Warm goat cheese with EVOO and oregano on bread)

Gambas al ajillo (Shrimp with garlic and olive oil)

Calamares fritos  (Fried squid)

Papas arrugadas con mojo picon (Canary island potatoes with a spicy sauce)

Sopa Castellana (traditional garlic soup)

I loved everything, especially the creamy, rich, goat cheese and the hot garlicky soup, which had an egg poached in it. We all know how I feel about bright, runny egg yolks. Mmmm. The only thing I probably won’t order again, and this goes for any tapas restaurant, is the Gambas al ajillo. I am not sure if it is because they keep cooking in the sizzling oil, but no matter where I eat them, the shrimp in this dish are always overcooked and chewy. I have been to a dozen or more tapas restaurants in my life, and while I love the garlicky oil that the shrimp come in, I do not remember ever having shrimp that weren’t a little overdone.

We didn’t save room for dessert, in fact we brought some of the calamari and potatoes home for later, but Taberna De Haro has the most decadent, incredible dessert ever, rich, dark chocolate truffles topped with quality olive oil and sea salt. Probably the most heavenly dessert I have ever had in Boston.

Taberna De Haro is just outside of Kenmore Square, so its not at all far from downtown but feels a little tucked away which makes it more special.

It looks like I will have to eat again at Toro soon to be able to write a comparison post

Toro would actually be a perfect place for a Boston blogger get together sometime soon! Maybe when its a bit warmer out? 🙂

I have not yet visited India, but I have eaten in many Indian restaurants and was lucky to spend my high school years running track and cross country with friends whose parents were from India and spoiled us with multi course homemade meals.

Aside from those incredible at home meals, the best Indian food I have ever eaten is at Kashmir in Galway, Ireland. When I was a student studying in Galway, they offered a daily buffet lunch for about 6 pounds, which for my roommates and I who were broke, vegetarian foodies, was miraculous!

When the hubs and I started dating, and we returned to Galway together, I was so happy to see that Kashmir was not only still open, but moved to a bigger location right on the water. Over the years, we have always made it a point to visit Kashmir on each trip to Ireland. We even ate here after we got engaged 🙂

On this past trip to Galway, we ate at Kashmir twice, once for a family dinner after my 13 mile run and once for a Sunday buffet lunch. Both times were amazing and left me wanting more. There is nothing better than spicy, filling, satisfying Indian food after a long run on a cold and blustery Irish winter day!

We always start with poppadums served with yogurt raita, mango chutney, and those spicy, pickled onions that I am addicted to.

Blurry, yet delicious and extra spicy Vegetable Boona with coriander, cloves, cumin seeds, bay leaves, garlic and ginger. This dish was a flavorful dinner and delightfully filling paired with naan bread.

The Sunday buffet offers a fairly large variety of both vegetarian and meat options including Dal Makhni, Vegetable Balti, Chicken Tikka Masala, Basmati rice, and Kheer, that creamy coconut rice pudding that I always seem to find room for.

Now that I am writing this, I have a major craving for Indian food! We may have to work a lunch buffet into our weekend plans 🙂

Do you like Indian food? What is your favorite dish? Restaurant? Or do you make it at home?

The second part of my Jacob’s Creek Superbowl meal were spicy Thai fish cakes. I thought, and I was right, that fish cakes would go perfectly with Jacob’s Creek Riesling.

image

The ingredients:

2 large salmon filets

2 TSP mayonnaise

1 cup Panko bread crumbs, split, 3/4 goes in the cake mix and 1/4 for coating

1 TSP red curry paste

1 large egg

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 TSP curry powder

image

To cook the salmon, I quickly poached it so that it was flaky but still dark pink in the middle. In the meantime, I blended all of the other ingredients in my food processer and set them aside.

Once the salmon was cooked and cooled, I combined it with the rest of the ingredients and stirred thoroughly.

image

I had to taste the Riesling just to make sure the flavors would go together 🙂

image

Making the cakes was easy. I just used my hands to roll and flatten them, then rolled in a small amount of Panko so that the outside would get a nice golden color.

image

To pan fry the fish cakes, I spread some coconut oil in a pan and then let each cake cook in it on medium heat for 3 minutes on each side. The result was quite pretty.

image

And delicious! The spicy curry flavor along with the slight oiliness of the fish went perfectly with the crisp, citrus acidity of the wine. Like the Jacob’s Creek Cabernet Sauvignon from last night’s post, this Riesling went really well with food and by itself provided a refreshing, light wine to drink. I have some of the Riesling left and hope to make a fennel and apple salad using the Riesling as part of the dressing. Sounds delish doesn’t it?

Do you have a favorite food and wine pairing?
