Building my Dream House on Pinterest

I’ll just apologize now for my growing obsession with Pinterest. Unless, of course, you share the obsession, then you know what I mean, and I want to follow you.

I am generally a list person; I have lists for everything, recipes, groceries, workouts, work tasks, home tasks, etc. For these, Notepad is my simple best friend. But for visual organization, Pinterest is my new best friend. It’s a great place to organize not just my own favorite recipes, photos, and trips, but also to pull from other people’s creativity and experiences.

I am a terrible clothes shopper. I have no sense of what should go together, so I buy random pieces, and I feel like I never have anything to wear. Not that I am going on a shopping spree anytime soon, but my Pinterest Style board actually helps me pull together things I love so that when I do go shopping, I at least have some sort of idea.

Likewise, I don’t have a house being built right now, but Pinterest allows me to dream a little dream when it comes to designing that someday house.  For every bad neighbor we have, add a couple of acres on to my future land. Update: our little neighbor boys smoke 24 hours a day; and even though they’re doing so inside their apartment, our kitchen now reeks like an ashtray. So glad we worked hard to buy this place!

Indulge me for a few minutes as I get away from our frustrating reality. . .

My dream house:

  • A farmhouse, preferably somewhere beautiful and not very cold
  • At least one fireplace
  • Lots of land with part of it entirely fenced in for my someday adopted dogs
  • A gigantic soaking tub
  • A steam shower
  • Hardwood floors that are heated
  • Solar panels or a windmill
  • A huge kitchen with 8 burners, a big island and built in wine fridge
  • A wine room
  • Dining space in the kitchen for a small group and a huge, rustic wood table in the dining room for parties
  • A giant garden and fruit trees

This will be my view.

And this table will do.

Our house will have to have enough land around it so that my giant soaking tub can have windows overlooking the beautiful landscape. It definitely won’t have as much white in the kitchen or bedroom; I am very spill-prone and pet friendly. I just like the other touches in these rooms. My farmhouse is comfy, well lit, warm, and functional, allowing us to do lots of cooking, relaxing, and entertaining.

What’s your dream house like?

I love it! Heated floors, yesss. So important. And that bathroom and kitchen are pretty fantastic. Also, re: smoking neighbors, it’s gotten to be a problem in my parents’ apartment. I don’t remember it ever being a problem when I was little, but whenever I go home, smoke leaks through one of the vents and it’s awful. I’m really angry that smoking cannot be outlawed in apartment buildings. It’s a health hazard.

It really is a health hazard, and the smell is so hard to get rid of. We are eventually going to have to sell, and having a common area that stinks is not going to help!

While I’m not on Pinterest, I’ve been getting a lot of blog views from that website!

My dream house would be a shabby chic/Laura Ashley/beach house. A girl can dream!

I would die for a house like this. I tend to gravitate towards a mash up of rustic meets modern decor points. I love everything you chose.

I will definitely be following you now! I love the rustic dining table, but would add fabric chairs with mine. I love that modern with rustic look. 🙂

        Hope you’re feeling better!

That’s gorgeous! But rather than a huge 8-burner stove, I’ve always thought it would be great to have TWO regular 30-inch 4- or 5-burner stoves! (Well, a girl can dream, can’t she?)

LOVE that rustic table and headboard. Jon’s parents have a heated bathroom floor and it’s amazing!

So sorry to hear about the smoke issue, that must be terrible 🙁

Not bad! I love the rustic headboard in your new master bedroom! Christopher and I fantastize about our “next house” – a free standing, sprawling home with, of course, a kickass kitchen in Cambridge, no less. Not exactly as romantic as yours but definitely not even close to a reality at this point!

Have you checked out Houzz.com? I get sucked in for hours at a time – it’s amazing. And there’s an iPhone app that’s equally addictive – perfect for when you have a few minutes to kill. It’s seriously addictive!

I have been dreaming of a house lately too … I love my house, but it is a starter, and in the next couple of years I would like to move to my “forever” home.
