Happy Thursday! Here’s to hoping the weekend brings better weather than we have had this week. Brr!

I have started to develop a MAJOR travel bug over the past couple of weeks, and I have spent a good bit of time looking through old travel posts, photos, and going online looking for great travel deals. I want to go somewhere!

Luckily, I found some unreleased photos from our trip to Ireland and the Czech Republic this past winter, and as I was reliving fun travel memories, I thought I would share them with you.

Prague

I loved walking over the Charles Bridge in Prague, but talk about cold! It was FREEZING while we were visiting as you can probably tell from my getup!

Sundown in Prague bathed everything in a beautiful, warm light.

We enjoyed a visit to an underground wine bar where we sampled Czech red wine while warming our toes. It was amazing and a little creepy to be so far underground. I love how old European cities are; if those walls could talk!

Another day, we visited a grand cafe overlooking the Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock. I enjoyed a real hot chocolate topped with thick, homemade whipped cream.

Back in Ireland, I made sure not to miss any of my favorite food haunts. McDonagh’s Fish & Chips is always a must stop, and I usually skip the fish and go straight for the chips with curry and garlic sauce. What can I say, I love my Irish chips!

Ireland offers 4 seasons in a day, and by the time we finished our chips and were heading toward the Spanish Arch to the car, we saw these kayakers coming in out of the fog. Creeeeeepy.

Are you traveling anywhere soon? If not, where would you go if you could go anywhere today?

Our last day in Prague was bright and sunny, and we took advantage of the nice day to walk around the Jewish Quarter (Josefov). This area of Prague dates back to the 13th Century and has seen more than its share of tragedy and struggles. Even while walking through the small, sunken below street level neighborhood, it was really hard to even imagine what life was like through the centuries. At least 2/3 of Prague’s Jewish community was killed in the Holocaust.

Unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos inside the buildings, but they offered an interesting and beautiful look into religion and lifestyle of the people who have passed through here through the centuries.

After exploring Josefov, we walked toward the river and ended up climbing endless staircases up to a humongous, snowy park that eventually led us back to the palace, but from a different direction this time.

image

Several hours of walking made us famished, and being that we were already on the palace side of the river, we headed to Peklo, a place that I had read about on many websites as the most romantic restaurant in Prague. It is on the property of an old monastery, and the restaurant is in the old wine cellar of the Premonstratensian Order in Strahov. It dates back to the 14th century and is deep, dark, and cave like. And once again, other than our waiter and the kitchen staff, we were the only people in the restaurant. Where is everybody?

We warmed up with two dark Czech beers and shared a couple of salads and appetizers for our lunch.

Prawn and apple salad served in a poppadum!

Another salad made of crunchy cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and farm cheese

The food here was really good, especially the prawn and apple salad. I am lucky in that I always know exactly what I want when I sit down at a restaurant. Probably because I am obsessed with menus and read them in advance 😉

The only complaint was that, once again, it felt a little uncomfortable to be the only patrons in a restaurant. Any time we looked back, our waiter was basically standing behind the bar staring into space, and every word we said seemed SO loud. I think that this restaurant definitely gets more crowded for dinner, and it truly is a remarkable place to visit. There is also a Crowne Plaza Hotel on the monastery grounds, and we are already talking about maybe staying there next time. Once again, a truly unforgettable meal in Prague!

What is the oldest place you have ever visited?

Literally. Our stay at the lovely Iron Gate Hotel in Prague not only came with a beautiful apartment, but it also included transportation to and from the airport and a three course dinner for two at the hotel’s subterranean restaurant.  We arrived in time for our reservation which, looking back, was kind of funny considering we were the only people in the restaurant for the entire 3 hours of our dinner! We first had a drink at the bar, pictured above. It was really beautiful and well stocked. I had a glass of Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut and the hubs had an Iron Gate cocktail which was a mix of vodka, absinthe, orange juice, pineapple juice, and Triple Sec. It was strong and yummy!

The hubs’ absinthe cocktail, isn’t it pretty?! Plus fresh bread, olive oil, and sea salt. A simple combination that I could pretty much live on!

Local ham with salad and fresh grated horseradish with apple. I tried the horseradish, and it was amazing! I loved the spiciness of the horseradish mixed with the sweet, crunchy apple.

Mushroom and vegetable soup, yet another delicious Czech soup dish. Perfect for warming up after lots of walking in the beautiful but freezing cold and slushy city streets

For dessert, Eric ordered pancakes topped with blueberries with a side of fresh whipped cream.

For my dessert, I decided to be adventurous and ordered the poppy seed noodles with a honey sauce, topped with strawberries and kumquats. It was an interesting dish, not very sweet at all, but something I am glad that I tried.

We each had a glass of Czech wine with dinner. I love trying and learning about wine regions of the world, especially those that are not very well known. We both opted for red, me a Lobkowicz Pinot Noir and the hubs a 2005 Tanzberg Zweigeltrebe. Both were very good. Mine was a pretty stanard Pinot which I always enjoy, and the Zweigeltrebe was amazing. It was very full bodied with a slight oakiness and a blend of dark berries. It went REALLY well with his dessert! Hehe the poor thing, I usually end up eating half of his food and drinking half of his wine!

After dinner, we decided to wander around Prague which is absolutely stunning after dark.

Nothing prettier than Prague’s Old Town under falling snow, with cups of hot gluwein.
