Winter whites. I wish I could wear them, but with me being generally accident-prone year-round, and with the dirty, wintry conditions of city-living,  they don’t make it to my wardrobe. Winter white wines, however, are more than welcome in our home, and I love to have a chilled, hearty white wine with a roasted chicken or other cozy meal. For recipes, please visit my recipe post page.  Today’s wine of the week, like last week’s was enjoyed at my favorite Galway wine bar, Sheridan’s. If you ever visit Galway, definitely give it a try!

Domaine de Coussergues Chardonnay Viognier

Tasting notes for this Domaine de Coussergues Chardonnay Viognier blend actually call it a summer wine, and while I can see that, I think it’s perfect for colder weather. The Chardonnay gives it a crisp acidity and citrusy notes, but it’s the Viognier that makes it stand up, giving it that weighty mouth feel that I love most about Viognier. Baked apricot and mango, big, forward, ripe fruit make this wine pack a flavor punch with a lingering finish. I loved it and loved that, when in Europe, I am better at trying European wines, where at home we tend to drink a lot of wines from the US. One of my favorite parts of tasting wine is discovery of a new favorite in my glass or a new place I want to visit.

Don’t limit your wine pairings to what other people  might find seasonally appropriate; enjoy what you like year-round!

While visiting Ireland last week I got to visit my favorite Galway wine bar twice. Sheridan’s is a must-visit for the wine lover; it’s the perfect spot for reading magazines and sipping wine alone, or devouring a cheese plate and a beautiful bottle of wine, as I did with my sister-in-law two days in a row. It was so lovely.

Martín Berdugo Crianza 2010 Sheridan’s always helps me to discover new favorite wines, and this weekend I fell in love with this Spanish red wine, Martín Berdugo Crianza 2010.  Once I smelled this wine, I knew we needed a full bottle. It reminded me of a Syrah, with its deep, dark intense fruit notes mixed with rich cocoa and a little bit of spice. This wine is velvety, lush, warming, and really just delicious. It was perfect on a very chilly Galway afternoon, with local Irish cheeses and family. We tend to buy a lot of California wines, so when I discover a wine from a region that I don’t always look to.

This wine would be a really wonderful addition to a holiday party, and I hope to find a bottle under the tree.

With the arrival of August comes travel planning for Thanksgiving for us. Since there are typically 2-3 vacation days off from the grind, we try to build a longer trip around the holiday. Like we did last year, right now we are planning on spending Thanksgiving in Ireland, hopefully with a trip to Italy to visit family. Now we just need some decent airfares.

My favorite way to spend a day in Galway City starts with a visit to the Spirit One Spa at the Radisson in Galway. With a whole complex of relaxation rooms like a sauna, a Turkish bath, a heated beach, and an aromatherapy steam room, you literally can spend a whole day there.  A half day pass also gets you access to the outdoor hot tub, which overlooks the salt lake and bay.

Just imagine a steamy soak with chilly air and this view.

The massage therapy and soaking tub treatments are heaven, and many of the packages follow it up with tea or lunch.

My second stop o the afternoon is always Sheridan’s Wine Bar, across the street from my old Galway apartment.

Sheridan’s Wine Bar is right above the Sheridan’s Cheesemonger; as a result they always have some delicious cheeses, olives, and other delights on hand. Sheridan’s is always cozy and bright, a warm retreat from the often-rainy Galway weather.

Light lunches like soup and sandwiches make for the perfect post-spa fare.

Wine and food magazines make for the perfect accompaniment to lunch and a hand-selected glass of wine.

Window seats make perfect perches to watch the world go by and to see family walking by as in the below photo, where you can see my brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and nephew. Smile

Galway Ireland

I have enjoyed many luxurious and relaxing afternoons at the Spirit One Spa and Sheridan’s Wine Bar. In fact, it’s these afternoons where I can say I am truly relaxed which is a rare occasion.

People often ask me for things to do in Ireland, and although this afternoon is not one that is touristy or traditional, I highly recommend it on a trip to Galway!
