Lovers of great Irish whiskey and the Boston Red Sox (or visiting teams) are in luck this year, with the arrival of Tullamore D.E.W. as the official whiskey of the Boston Red Sox,  now being poured at the recently unveiled Tully Tavern.

About Tully Tavern:

Located in the Right Field Grandstand section, the 2,450 square feet bar features a magnificent view where fans can gather to cheer on the Sox while enjoying the convivial atmosphere of a good Irish pub. Created with the look and feel of the legendary Irish whiskey distillery, Tully Tavern will give ticket holders the opportunity to enjoy Tullamore D.E.W., a triple-blended, triple distilled Irish whiskey in signature cocktails such as the Monster Mule.

Boston Red Sox

The team from Tullamore D.E.W. kindly hosted us at a game earlier in the week, sharing plenty of delicious, easy-to-drink Monster Mules paired with Fenway’s favorite snacks. We’re whiskey fans in our house, and it’s well-worth noting how smooth Tullamore D.E.W. is, whether mixed in a cocktail or on its own. Fenway can’t pour it on its own because, Boston, but having a bottle on hand at home for a chilly spring/never-ending winter night is definitely a necessity here!

Despite the cold, we warmed up nicely after a couple of Monster Mules! Tully Tavern and Tullamore D.E.W. are great additions to the time-honored Boston ballpark.

Interested in visiting Tully Tavern?

Seats are sold through group sales (http://m.mlb.com/redsox/tickets/group/) and tickets range from $35 to 75 a seat depending on the game.

Can’t get to a Red Sox game? You can still enjoy a Monster Mule at home! You’ll find me mixing these up for boat days this summer!

Last week I attended a Women & Whiskey event  at the beautiful Fairmont Copley Hotel in Boston. Held by Where to Eat Boston and led by Brandy Rand, a cocktail and wine marketing expert, the whiskey tasting was fun, informative, and delicious.

We kicked it off with a Basil Hayden bourbon drink, a tea julep that was a nod to the Kentucky Derby coming up that weekend. The drink was lightly sweet with a lovely tea flavor and a kick of bourbon, really delicious.

The Fairmont Copley put out a nice spread of grilled breads, cheese, and charcuterie, and I filled my plate a couple of times, enjoying each bite with sips of my cocktail. The perfect meal?

Brandy shared information on how whiskey is made, the history of whiskey in various places in the world, and information about whiskey through the decades. It was interesting to learn how vodka, flavorless and difficult to smell, nudged whiskey out as a top choice, but how whiskey (especially bourbon) is making a comeback.

We wafted various whiskeys and learned to properly taste, holding tastes in our mouth, making sure to cover all the tastebuds, and appreciating the finish of each whiskey.

I had tried some of the whiskeys before, including the Scotch whisky, Auchentoshan while we were in Scotland. However, this was my first time trying Japanese whiskey, a Yamazaki 12! I really loved it!

We also tasted three bourbons side-by-side, Maker’s Mark, Basil Hayden, and Knob Creek rye. I’ve become a rye fan in the past few years and enjoyed the vanilla and oak notes in the Knob Creek. It was my favorite of the American whiskeys.

The winner for the night for me, however, was the Tyrconnell Irish whiskey. I can’t help it; it was smooth with notes of honey and a little bit of smoke, evoking moments of sitting by a turf fire on past trips to Ireland. It smelled and tasted like a bit of home.

Brandy did a really awesome job keeping us interested and making whiskey fun and approachable, especially for women, who are often steered toward girly (vodka) and fruity drinks. Brandy wanted us to be able to identify a whiskey that we liked, and from the chatter in the crowd, it seemed that everyone did.

Are you a whiskey fan? If you have an opportunity to attend a Women & Whiskey event, I would definitely recommend it!

Tis the time of year for shamrocks in windows, preparations for the St. Patrick’s Day parade (or in Boston, boycott of the parade), and corned beef everything everywhere. This year I’ll be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Connemara in the West of Ireland for part of the day and in Galway for the other half of the day, but I will be DVRing the Boston St. Patrick’s Day breakfast, a tradition I do enjoy.

If you’re planning a St. Patrick’s Day feast, either over the weekend or on the day itself, here are a few Irish ingredient/Irish-inspired recipes for your St. Patrick’s Day Feast. Not all are traditional, but they all contain a little piece of the Emerald Isle. A vase of Irish daffodils (available at Trader Joe’s) adds a little Irish Spring to the festivities. Whatever you do for St. Patrick’s Day, I hope it fills your day with luck and love!

Irish Brown BreadThis bread is not too difficult, even for a baking novice like myself. It’s perfect with some Kerrygold butter and/or some nice Irish smoked salmon, and it pairs well with Guinness Beef Stew or a nice Seafood Chowder.

Irish Whiskey Chocolate Cake – chocolate, whiskey, fresh cream. . . what’s not to love?

Chocolate Biscuit CakeThis is a favorite of my husband and often found in bakeries in Ireland. Green Hills in Dorchester sometimes sells it by the slice, but it’s as easy to make it yourself (says the girl who hates making dessert).

Guinness Ice Cream FloatsThese grown-up ice cream floats are as easy as can be and perfect for when you have company, as you don’t have to spend a ton of time prepping dessert.

Guinness Beef Stew – With the forecast still stuck in winter, this hearty stew is a must-make. It’s ideal for warming up your guests when they arrive, and the leftovers are even better!

Irish Whiskey and Brown Sugar SalmonThis dish is a regular on our menu rotation. It’s incredibly easy and a flavorful way to prepare a healthy piece of salmon. I continually struggle to get enough fish in our diets, and this recipe is definitely a winner.
