James Taylor at Tanglewood on the 4th of July has been one of my life list items for ages, and this year I finally got to experience it. It was well worth the wait.

We traveled out to Lenox, Massachusetts, the site of Tanglewood Music Center, to meet my sister and her husband for the concert. The weather was iffy; it rained on and off as we drove and was drizzly when we arrived at our hotel, the Knight’s Inn in Lenox. The Berkshires can be an expensive trip, so when I found rooms at great prices at the Knight’s Inn, I wasn’t expecting much. In reality, we were really pleasantly surprised. Our rooms were spotlessly clean, it was quiet, the staff was friendly, and the view was beautiful. It was also close to all of the major attractions of the area. I was glad we took a risk on the hotel and would totally stay there again.

The Berkshires

Going to Tanglewood is quite the experience in itself. We had lawn seats, which meant we could bring in a picnic to enjoy during the concert. There were some serious picnic setups that included white tablecloths, candles, all sorts of food and wine, and more. We had a nice spread of our own, including Champagne and wine, sandwiches, snacks, and candles. Doors open at 5, three hours before the concert, and the beautiful grounds, plus picnics, make those hours fly by.

The views of surrounding mountains and Stockbridge Bowl are magnificent. We live in such a stunning state, with really unique features that vary from place to place. It felt amazing to be surrounded by so much green.

The concert itself was amazing. James Taylor played for about three hours, and his set list included lots of favorites. He was, as I expected, funny and charming and adorable. If you are a fan, I recommend checking out the 4th of July Tanglewood show.

The day after the concert we made a couple of stops on our way out of the Berkshires. We visited a beautiful lake, then headed to two fancy, famous resorts, Cranwell and Blantyre.

We were hoping to have tea or something at Blantyre, but that sort of thing is reserved for guests. Maybe someday. . .

A visit to the Berkshires is just one option for a beautiful Massachusetts vacation. There is so much to see and do, and I would love to visit again soon for the arts, nature, and food that makes the area so special.

New England hibernates for long enough, and if you live here, this past Winter has felt particularly awful. When we woke up to blue skies and beaming sun on Saturday, we knew that a beach day was in order, even if it meant walking barefoot with a winter coat on.

We have been under a lot of stress lately that we can’t really control, so we decided to get away from the everyday and take a trip to Onset, which is a tiny village in Wareham, Massachusetts, a stone’s throw from Cape Cod.

About an hour from Boston, Onset is marked by stunning, calm beaches and sweet Victorian homes.

The sun was strong enough to warm the sand, and it felt SO good to walk along the water’s edge barefoot. I went to the beach in Miami, but there is just something so different about a New England beach.

Onset, Massachusetts

You may already know that we are OBSESSED with the sea, so we spent a good amount of time wandering Onset’s beaches, building up quite the appetite. Unfortunately, Onset is very seasonal, and a lot of the places I scoped out were not open.

Lucky for us, the pizza place we stumbled upon, Marc Anthony’s, was way more than a pizza place and was very cool, while offering ridiculously good, inexpensive food, great music, and friendly service in funky surroundings. I loved the long wooden tables and stained glass, and the soundtrack, which went back and forth between Grateful Dead and Beatles during our entire lunch.

The seaside makes me crave seafood, and fried clam bellies, fries, and chowder were the perfect, cozy lunch to come inside to. Everything was delicious, and Marc Anthony’s had a steady line of takeout and sit down customers. Clearly, they are on to something.

After lunch we went for another walk on the beach and checked out some of Onset’s beautiful architecture before heading to nearby favorite day trip town, New Bedford.

We never miss a chance to taste wine at Travessia Urban Winery, and while they were not quite ready yet, we loved learning about the new releases. I can’t wait to taste the latest wines produced by this wonderful winery, and I loved revisiting ones they had available. It’s crazy to see how wines change in the bottle. For example, the most recent vintage of Vidal Blanc was a little too sweet for my taste when it was released, and it has aged into a rich wine that is reminiscent of a Viognier, luscious stone fruit notes, delightfully weighty mouth feel.

Our little jaunt outside of Boston reminded us what a difference a few miles – and a few degrees – makes. Massachusetts is one of the best places to live in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, and I am excited once again to be on the brink of the best times of year!

Did you enjoy the Spring weather this past weekend?

There’s nothing better than a long weekend and a little getaway, is there? Sometimes you just need to change up your surroundings, even if you don’t get far from home. While we would love to have made another jaunt to Sonoma this weekend, our schedules don’t look like they will allow for a real vacation anytime soon.

After working past 10:30 on Friday night, most of the day Saturday, and Sunday morning, I was spent (still am!), and we headed about an hour north of Boston to The Stonehedge Inn and Spa in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts. Surrounded by rolling green fields and lush greenery, Stonehedge really feels like the country. It has that wonderful, woodsy smell, and it’s very quiet, exactly what we needed.

Stonehedge Inn and Spa

Our room was cozy and featured a huge soaking tub, giant, fluffy bed, and a sitting area with a fireplace.

Stonehedge Inn and Spa

After we settled in, we decided to go for a wander over to the pool and spa area. The grounds at Stonehedge are absolutely beautiful.

Stonehedge Inn and Spa

The pool and spa area are also lovely, but we were a little disappointed that the sauna and steam room didn’t seem to be working, and we couldn’t get massage appointments. I was told it was because the spa gets packed on the weekends, but there was no one there; all of the treatment room doors were open, the lights were out. I guess they were just closed for the weekend?

Stonehedge Inn and Spa

Since we couldn’t use the sauna and steam room, I took a long bath in the big tub and then we headed down to the lounge at Left Bank restaurant for a glass of wine. One of the reasons I had been dying to visit Stonehedge was that it has the largest wine cellar in New England. Unfortunately, when we booked, I wasn’t told that the wine cave was under construction.

The restaurant itself is well-stocked with wine, and the lounge was a great, relaxed space. The wine list was a literal book which I had a great time thumbing through. Left Bank also features 60 bottles of wine that are under $60, some well under that, so it’s easy to find a bargain bottle. Stonehedge Inn and Spa

By the time we were seated for dinner, the rain had stopped, and we enjoyed a bright meal in the sunroom area of Left Bank. Our room included a three course meal, and we were able to choose anything off of the menu.

We chose a bottle of Domaine Carneros sparkling wine to go with dinner. Bubbly goes with everything!

For my starter, I went with a beautiful stuffed Portobello mushroom in a balsamic reduction.

For him, the entrée choice was the grilled tenderloin with a port reduction.

I was almost too full for dessert, but I managed to eat a few bites of this strawberry crepe roulade with an Irish coffee that was one of the best I have ever had.  We ended the evening in the library at the inn, with my husband playing the resident piano while I listened. He is so talented; we need a piano at home!Stonehedge Inn Library

Overall, our experience at Stonehedge Inn was a good one. We did choose it partially because of the spa amenities and wine cave, so we left feeling a little disappointed but generally happy and definitely more relaxed. We would drive up to go to Left Bank again, especially for one of their wine dinners.

How did you spend the long weekend?
