Day Trip to New Bedford

Massachusetts is the place to be in the springtime, and taking advantage of day trips in the area is one of our favorite things to do. We first visited New Bedford when we joined the Travessia wine club a few years ago, and we started to love the city on our first visit. We’ve made many trips back, mostly for wine club events and wine tasting, and each time we seem to discover a little something new and different.

This past Sunday we headed down on a bright and sunny morning, excited for a special library wine tasting event. Since we were early, we had plenty of time to wander New Bedford.

The streets were silent on a Sunday morning; we were the only ones out, and we enjoyed the blue skies and newly paved pedestrian area by the waterfront.

We weaved up and down the cobblestone streets, passing the whaling museum and Cuffe Park. This compass in stone reminded me of my new blog design.

New Bedford was covered in spring flowers like tulips and daffodils. Between these colorful little pops and its charming architecture, the city looked beautiful and alive, and sparked some conversation on its rich maritime history.

We both needed a little pick-me-up, and we stumbled across The Celtic Coffee House at the perfect time. This coffee shop and pub combo is adorable! It’s so cozy, makes great coffee, and had a really friendly and warm staff. They have live music and other events; it’s a really fun space.

After a relaxing morning, it was time for the main event. We had the fun opportunity to taste some of Travessia’s oldest wines, bottles that had been set aside and/or forgotten about. All of the wine aged beautifully, and we had a great time eating Portuguese sausage, cheese, and bread. We picked up some new and old wine to enjoy on the boat this summer.

On our last New Bedford trip, we fell in love with Cork Wine and Tapas Bar and knew it would become a staple of our New Bedford day trips. It was just as good this time, serving up  a great “Clean & Crisp” flight of wine, incredible, spicy clam chowder, and lobster crostini.

I love restaurants that do wine flights, and Cork has a number of fantastic and fun options.

We enjoyed another great day in New Bedford, and I was wishing we could stay longer. There’s a lot to do, and with it being only about an hour from Boston, it’s a great place to visit for the day or even an overnight.
