Wine of the Week: Travessia 2014 Pinot Noir Rosé

When the calendar tells me that it’s Spring,, I get ready for rosé . There’s something so hopeful about dry pink wine that pairs with light and delicious seasonal dishes that signals the arrival of longer days and warmer weather (unless you live in Boston).

Travessia Urban Winery has been making one of my favorite rosé wines since tthe very early days of this blog. We discovered Travessia at our first Coastal Wine Trail event, became wine club members shortly after, and have been fans ever since.

The 2014 Rosé of Pinot Noir may just be my favorite Travessia rosé yet. It’s dry, drier than past years, with a beautiful rosy pink color and a crispness that will go perfect with the bounty of seafood from the nearby coast. Light notes of strawberry and watermelon mix with a hint of minerality. Wines like this are the perfect example of how well wines go with food from the same region in which they were grown. The grapes for this wine are from nearby Dartmouth.

As always when we visit Travessia, we wandered New Bedford afterwards, loving the working fishing docks, deep blue sea and perfect skies. New Bedford is a charming New England gem and well worth a visit.

We capped off our visit with another delicious meal at Cork. I definitely recommend the Shrimp Ajillo!

Wine Tasting at Black Birch Vineyard

The Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts is a place I lived for four years, and going back is always a little like going home. While we live in the city, I long to live out in the country (preferably near a coast, ahem, Sonoma). Weekends away in the country are so incredibly rejuvenating, and on our 4th of July trip to the Berkshires, we spent some time in Southampton and Northampton, Massachusetts.

While on a wine trail event a couple of years ago, I tasted wine from Black Birch Vineyards, fell in love with the wine, and have been thinking about it ever since. Luckily we had plenty of time for a slow ride back from Lenox, and we found ourselves gazing out at the Pioneer Valley countryside with glasses of wine in hand, wanting to spend the day there.

Black Birch Vineyards is a small winery and tasting room, surrounded by rolling green hills, vineyards, and horses. The countryside around the vineyard is jaw-dropping, and the wines at Black Birch are as well.

Before and after our wine tasting, we stretched our legs and soaked up the sun by wandering around the area.

Once we decided to go inside the tasting room, we went straight for wines by the glass, which we took outside and enjoyed on the Adirondack chairs and while checking out the vines. Sipping wine in Adirondack chairs is becoming quite the habit of ours.

I came to Black Birch Vineyards for their Cabernet Franc; it’s a favorite grape of mine, and it grows well in places like Long Island and areas of Massachusetts. The Cab Franc at Black Birch has the perfect amount of peppery spice and earthy funk, dried leaves, and a hint of dark berries. It is a beautiful wine.

A new favorite we discovered was the Traminette, a grape that I don’t think I have had before. I am simply in love with this wine. It’s full of rich honey notes but also has nice orange and pineapple notes, the perfect amount of acidity, and a weight that makes you want to swish it around in your mouth. It’s a great summer wine because of the acidity, but the richness means it would lend itself to going well with fall dishes.

Our visit to Black Birch Vineyards was pure bliss and another reminder that Massachusetts can make great wine. If you’re in the Western part of the state, I definitely recommend a visit!

Wine of the Week: Travessia Rosé of Pinot Noir

I honestly can’t believe that my blog is going to be five years old next month. That makes me five years older when I started! As I was sitting down and sipping this glorious Wine of the Week, Rosé of Pinot Noir from Travessia, my mind wandered to my first encounter with this winery, at the Coastal Wine Trail kickoff event shortly after I started my blog. Umm, my photos have gotten slightly better than my post about the event then, but my palate still loves Travessia, and we have enjoyed seeing this Massachusetts winery grow and succeed over the years. It was the Travessia Rosé that really got me the first time and what made us sign up for the wine club and head down to New Bedford for the first wine club event.

This 2013 Massachusetts Rosé of Pinot Noir is one of the best rosé wines I have had ever, from anywhere. I have said this about rosé before, but it is summer in a glass, and this one is so perfect chilled on a sunny day. The color of this wine is vibrant and fun, and it’s nice and dry with some juicy, bold strawberry and raspberry notes. It’s easy to drink, so easy that we tend to bring out a bottle anytime we have company, even when it doesn’t feel summery out. We’re going through our stash of “boat wine” before boat season even begins!

I’ve recommended it before, but visiting Massachusetts wineries makes for a great day trip/half day after a visit to Horseneck Beach. As you start to plan your Massachusetts day trips for the summer, here are a few posts on what you might expect.
